The direction of the teen modeling post went really Meta and callout-y really fast ... do we have informal standards to apply here? [more inside]

Is there some way to get a clean up in the Colin Powell thread? Jesus, a hugely optimistic event and a couple of knickers in a twist hot heads turn it into a 3rd grade playground.

Or, you know, things are getting a little ugly over in the "The UK is one big terror magnet thread...."

Really? You don't care? How much?
To avoid being coy— Every time I seem to see jouke in a thread, he's offering a content-free epistle on his apathy. Rather than engaging in the threads, I'm taking it here.
(As I only get one MeTa every, what, four days, there were also rumblings of a Southeast Michigan meetup next Wednesday in the Detroit thread. Perhaps there will be a happy derail.)

Seriously, wtf is the point of this FPP? The site's not in english so it seems to me to be a thread that has no other purpose than to comment on the attractiveness of the women who are featured. How is this appropriate for Metafilter?

I really don't understand this site anymore. I have been reading for a year and been a member for about seven months. My last two posts turned into people yelling at me, or telling me I posted in the wrong place.
Just like this one will turn into people calling me names and being negative.
I don't get it. I read the "About Us" and "FAQ", I get yelled at for signing my posts, not posting in the right place. NOBODY offers help, just kicking me in the shins for not understanding the subtle nuances of this site. Which, I might point out, aren't explicitly outlined! Something too "MetaTalk-y"? Great, what does that mean? These the same folks that yelled at me when I made a comment that MeFi looks like 2 day old Reddit.
Y'all have fun with your internet clique. There are good people on this site, but these days it seems like the mean ones are loudest.
Signed,
Me

Ok, when did posts with incredibly little content become acceptable on Metafilter? How is this an acceptable post? Why not just link to the image on the front page so we don't have to bother clicking a link to see one image?
Likewise, likewise, likewise. I get enough crap like this emailed to me from my dad. Ok, I don't mean to be so frank and rude, but I fear for the future of Metafilter. Posts like these are not the best of the web.

Fine, i'll bite - 55526. First of all, I don't think some lame newsfilter post about another idiot soldier dying in a pointless war deserves to be in the blue. Quite apart from that, i DEFINITELY don't think some half-assed tribute, in the form of a PERIOD, is a worthy title for an FPP. Memorialize this crap elsewhere, I say, and stop tying up the front page with your idiot posts.

The Eurovision post had the winner's name in the title. Could there not have been some consideration for people living in countries where it is has not been shown yet?
I look forward to watching it tonight, and while my life doesn't hinge upon who wins, there's a certain pleasure in finding out.
Can this either be edited with a big SPOILER INSIDE notice, or removed? I made a minor effort to avoid finding out who won, but didn't expect to see it mentioned in the first line of a MeFi post.

You know, there ought to be a rule (or at least social approbation) against a self-linking double post callout. It seems like it's OK to link to previous comments, but one should let a third party make the DP call.

This thread is a disaster. It has such a long pissing match in it that advances nothing that I simply cannot see going click-click-click all the way through the noise to flag each off-topic post. I feel like I need a button for "there's so many violating posts in this thread I cannot possibly flag them all individually and still have time for 3 squares and 8 hours of sleep in a day." [mi]

Dios is blatantly trolling. Again. This time, there can be no doubt in my mind that he is simply posting ridiculous, inflammatory and disingenuous comments for the purpose of starting needless arguments. If he had bothered to read the post, he would know that his point is invalidated completely. Do we have to tolerate his constant shitting on any political thread?

Stop referring to yourself in the third person, buttwipe.
Unless you're Ricky Henderson. And if you are, prove it. And if you prove it, my sincere apologies because I do believe that you (and only you) are entitled to do that.

I don't care if it is phrased in the form of a question. Using AskMe to get in a second post because you "already shot [your] wad today with a different MeFi front page post and thought this merited a posting" is just not on.

This really, really sucks. It's quite presumptuous to assume that 17,500 people know everything about the band that you like. Please educate us by providing background information, so we can learn about new things. It's worth the extra effort and will make Mefi a better place.

It's common knowledge that written text lacks some of the communications cues used in speech, like intonation and body-language. So we all know that it's easy to make a false assumption about someone's intended meaning. Yet I see constant flame wars breaking out on the MeFi sites because two people interpret the the *subtext* of a post in two totally different ways. My question is, why make an ASSUMPTION about someone's intent? And if you do make an assumption, why make a negative assumption? If you think it might be intended as an insult, why not ask (via email preferably) the writer about his intent BEFORE posting a nasty retort? [more inside.]

It's bad enough he posts a weak, vapid message about basically nothing... but he's done it twice now, within 6 months, using the same links. How long will we continue to allow him to turn metafilter into his own chat room?

OK, I'm going to call troll on this. It's a continuation from another thread, so it's unnecessary. It's trollish because the poster is using the post not to point out something interesting or debate-worthy on the Web, but to further an agenda.

jesus christ. Are people ever going to mellow out on the double post callouts? A couple times in the past week, I've met someone that knows about the site, and their first comment to me is "everyone there loves to bitch about a double post, I never post there because of it"

Bad posts are good for the soul. The over-confident are cut down to size; the timid are reassured they're right to think twice before posting; collective standards are reasserted. Honesty prevails; confessions abound and everyone realizes they're human - at least for a while.

"I thought I told you to go screw yourself, you fascist piece of shit."
This is why I fear for Metafilter. Not that people get away with this--he got called on it--but the fact that people feel it's necessary or desirable to say things like this to each other, increasingly, in all kinds of contexts. I don't care how vehemently you disagree, nobody here is "a piece of shit." I'm not asking for "sanctions" or anything, just wondering: is there any way to cultivate a sense of civility here, or should we just give up and leave the place to the jackals?

holloway leads the pack, but there are a few others walking right behind.
matt, have you even looked at this thread? it's really offensive, completely unproductive as a conversation--the misogynists came
out of the woodwork too quickly for that.
honestly, if it were me, I'd boot a few people, but you might consider at least pulling the thread....
