I tried to gift a membership to a minor internet celebrity, but I got the message "It appears your friend already has an account, as this email address is in use". Really? We have a fandom post feature now, which of course is excellent. Now how about a random user feature? It could be called 'Get to Know A MeFite' or something like that. I think there are a lot of interesting user profile pages which many people have not and may not ever see, which is a shame, and this would be a potential way to highlight some of them. As an added bonus, this feature could lead to more Metafilter meet-ups as people stumble upon other users who they may not have known lived so close by. It could also lead people to explore their randomly chosen MeFite's posting history which may, in turn, lead many to discover several excellent (and awful) posts, questions and MeTa screeds which they may never have come across before.

Matt, can I have a pony for Christmas? Nothing too fancy, just some public statistics. Boingboing, for example, uses AWStats, which provides a delicious smörgåsbord of information. It doesn't sound too difficult to use, I've set up similar things on sites of my own.

It's been a while since I visited my profile page. In doing so, I found it to be far more cluttered and loaded with information than it used to be. Can we get some options to hide some of these things (like top ten tags)?

For example, if I have no contacts, why not just hide any text about it? Why does it have to say that I have no contacts? If I have no projects or favorites, why not just hide that information instead of saying that I don't have any?

And can't that big long "What's the deal with your nickname..." text be shortened to "Personal Info" or something similar?

It would be cool to have RSS feeds on a per user basis. I'm thinking mainly posts but comments would be fine too. Something like http://www.metafilter.com/username.mefi/user/posts.rss and http://www.metafilter.com/username.mefi/user/comments.rss. It'd be a great way to keep up with people whose stuff you enjoy (like everyone's favorite) w/o getting lost in the volume.

Is there a way to search user profile pages for certain words? I was trying to add a 'MetaGame' keyword to my page for use by geekily Mefites to match up in online games (MMORPGs, Live!, Nintendo Wifi, etc) for some constructive combat from the safety of our Mom's basement.

Am I missing something obvious, or is the a pony that could be coaxed to life?

Link to a map on user page? As long as you have the coordinates, creating a link consisting of "http://maps.google.com/?q=lat%20long" would be trivial. Pardon me if this has been suggested already, but I scanned the threads on the lat/long feature and didn't see it.

Missing pony: Author information in RSS feeds. According to this earlier metatalk thread, the RSS feeds should contain the name of a post's author in the appropriate field, but there are no such tags showing up in the feed. Was that pony stillborn? Can it be revived?

I'd like to see individual comments feeds for all MeFi posts. This would make threads much easier to track. Also, could we get feeds for MeFi tags too perhaps? And what about feeds for each user's posts and comments, like how 43 Things uses them.

Can we close the door now? I'm genuinely happy to have some new blood, but here's the problem. Pretty much everyone who's been reading the site with their noses against the glass has been let in. Hereafter, we're going to get a bunch of folks who happen to be wandering by, and know nothing of how things are done around here. (I don't know if that's the case with notmtwain, I'm only using his/her post as an example because it glares so.) We can always open it up again later, but can we have a moratorium on new users? Just for now? Please?

Hi everyone, longtime lurker, first time poster. During my days in the wilderness poking my nose in here and reading religiously, I've always wondered if there had ever been a "metapoll" conducted of the membership. If there has, please excuse my ignorance (I couldn't find any mention of it). If not, I think it would be the greatest thing ever! Politics, favourite music, movie, country of origin, languages spoken. I'd love to know more about the gang in a non privacy-violating way...Not that I'd know how to go about doing it. Any suggestions?

Is it technically possible, without too much bandwidth "wastage" I hope, to have a list of all the MeFites loggen in at any given moment? I remember there was an "X number of people currently logged in" feature a while ago If Matt decides to bring it back, is it possible to actually have the names of those logged in?

I think it's fantastic that our email addresses are now shielded from non-members, but that still means that 13,000 people are free to send anonymous flames to any member--or to sign them up for spam. How about this: Instead of the profile page displaying the email address, it shows an email form. One would have to be logged in to use it, the sender's username would show up in the email, and the recipient's address would remain hidden.
