Request: Member of the month poll. October 8, 2001 11:38 AM Subscribe
A Member of the Month. With software for voting.
We don't want to impose on Matt too much (I'll be the harbinger of this sentiment for this particular thread, someone else has to do it next time), but I do like that idea, although some sort of logging system would have to be in place so that people only vote once per day, or something, just to keep some people (I was going to make that a link, but why bother, you know) from abusing it. And of course, no voting for yourself.
Overall, sounds neat. Maybe logs for member of the hour, day, week, year also. Just a relatively simple vote tabulation system...

With all due respect, I think that's a terrible idea. It promotes a popularity contest sort of thing.
Unless I could absolutely 100% sure that I would win. Then, by all means, go ahead.
Maybe smartass of the month?

It would turn into "most non-offensive member of the month". You'd breed conformity. Maybe on a similar note, there could be a feature where people could rate your comment, and only you'd see the results. Like a link that says "rate me". You go and have a choice between 1-10. If a person posts a good comment it usually goes unrewarded and they don't know if the comment is good or not. Nothing would be affected by this (like comment standing) but it would help in the future to know "ouch I shouldn't have said that".

look, why don't we just do this on our own? whenever the mood strikes, post a note of appreciation to metafilter-specific. if matt likes the idea, he can link it in the sidebar (if that's still there.)
as a bonus, we'll have specific threads to point to when we want to illustrate members we feel strengthen the community.

Kottke really doesn't post here that much.
As for the same person winning every month, there are two ways around that. You just set it up so you're voting for threads (not people), or else you make it so you can't win if you've won in the past year.

I vote for ParisParamus. He has a certain winning combination of prolificness and recalcitrance.

When it comes to popularity, it begins and ends with hincandenza. We differ on SO much, and yet I cannot help but feel this uncontrollable frisson...
