Sorry, but
this is a dumb deletion, IMHO. A lot of people like Newsfilter type stuff, and those are almost always the most interesting and longest threads. This is big news in the sports community, and the deletion reason is just silly.

Can't for the life of me figure out why
this was deleted. Perhaps a less cryptic reason would help because this one was totally not obvious.

A pony request for the "my comments" view. It would be nice to be able to jump to the last comment one made in a topic from the "My Comments" view. It is sometimes difficult to follow the conversation from ones last post without searching.

Suggestion, not critical: perhaps a way to show that a post has been closed/deleted, in the style of the "X New Comments" update at the bottom of the thread?

Wikileaks: Its a big story and is going to run for a while yet, how about sidebarring the recent huge
thread so that people don't feel the need to create new ones?

I'm looking for a story about a person who slept with their best friend who was having trouble finding a woman, but regretted it because the friend lost their confidence as a result. It was in askmefi.

The tag page for
infanticide says that there's 1 post tagged with infanticide, but there doesn't appear to be any. Deleted tag/thread issue? Bonus points: relevant tags for Indian/Chinese infant gender disparity.

There was a thread here, a couple of years ago, I think, about the Zen-like (I don't remember if he was actually aligned with that tradition) aphorisms of a wise man. Many of his insights were oddly striking, but some of them seemed kind of obvious, too. An example was something like this: "People look more attractive at night."
I have searched, but not been able to find that thread. Any idea where it is?

I can't find the thread featuring sad, touching comics. Also featuring a comic where main character sends hanger to pregnant ex. Thanks!

How and under what circumstances do MeFi threads die or become deleted?
Perhaps this is an FAQ and someone can point out an existing answer, but a week or so ago, I posted a comment on a thread I found on the front page, and about an hour later found to be missing from the front page.
There is still a link to the thread in my personal comment history, but it seems otherwise publicly inaccessible.
Also, many of the comments in the thread indicated that the posters fully expected the thread to be deleted and that they were jockeying for "last post".
I've read most if not all the introductory matter here, but I don't remember seeing anything that covered this.

There was something posted a few weeks ago (can't even remember if it was in the blue or the green) about a website that allows you to design your own paper robots or creatures and then fold them up according to a pre-made template. Trigger any memories?

A baby
eohippus, neatly saddled with a bar napkin inscribed with my name, just pranced by on the thinnest of air and winked at me, whereupon I had a pony shot in celebration.

Okay, since I sort of wasted my last MeTa post by being too fast on the draw, how about something more constructive. I think we could save a great deal of overhead on the server by changing the way 100+ post threads are displayed.

FollowupFilter? I was using the subject of
this thread as an example in an email today, and while
researching it I noticed that just today there was an
update to this story. The original thread is locked, but I not sure this is FPP worthy.

Er,
Guilty... It's easy to monopolize a thread when the subject is dear to one's heart. But it's difficult to gauge when one should resign and say "I'll shut up now". Cheerleading is annoying and thread-destroying. Although it's impossible to regulate posters' percentages and stuff, I'd like to hear other members' opinions on what constitutes the acceptable limit for commenting on one's own thread - considering that the moment you post it, it no more belongs to you than it does to anybody else.

Um...I posted a link a little while ago and now the thread is gone. Did I double-post or something bad and didn't know it? It was about the Greek government outlawing electronic games...

a truly outstanding thread. reminiscent of whatever 'metafilter golden age' era for which you pine. nearly all the discussion posts were well thought out, offered interesting perspectives gained through personal experience or outside reading; and many viewpoints were supported by unique and interesting off-site links. whether or not this topic grabbed your interest, this is the type of discussion we should always be striving towards. what can we do to encourage such behavior?

Help a guy out. I'm looking for a link to a website that was posted here a few months ago. It was a flash animation about what America could do as a country if it reduced its defense spending by 5%. I've searched and just can't seem to find the original thread. Can anyone help? Please?

Sometimes, after viewing a thread in MetaTalk, when I hit the back button, the other threads lose the number of new messages since my last visit information. It doesn't seem to happen all the time. (Mac IE5)

Maybe it's just me, but there are times when
a thread seems to take on the conversational (and intellectual) tone of an AOL chat room.

Over the past couple of days, it's occurred to me that mefi does not scale particularly well when large numbers of comments are posted to a thread. I think that loading 100 comments or more makes for a fairly unwieldy webpage, and probably puts a lot of strain not just on the source database for the comments, but also the bandwidth of mefi. This inefficiency is particularly bad when it comes to such popular threads at the Kaycee ones that have been recently posted, as many people will be accessing it.
I think that comments should be cut up into some slightly more managable chunks. That is, rather than have all of the comments on the same page, they should be split up into groups of 25 or 30 comment pages; clicking on the "new comments" will take you to the correct page, thus bypassing most older comments, and the correct id on the page.
What do you think?
