Users growing: stats available? September 24, 2001 10:47 AM   Subscribe

Matt, I would like to thank you for hosting this fabulous forum. I have learned so much about the wonderful world of the web, most recently such things as E/N sites :) and cam girls and how some people react to them. :) And I have a question. I have been noticing the numbers of Metafilter members rising steadily on the front page (and kudos to you for hosting all 11,000+ of us). There was a rise in members (pun unintended!) right after you came back from vacation and another big bump following the horrible events of Sept. 11. Could you tell us how many people have joined since Sept. 11, since you came back from vacation, and say, since the beginning of this year? Do you have those statistics handy? I think it would be interesting to see how many of us have joined in what time periods, even from the beginning!

Andy's http://waxy.org/mefi/ stats should give you everything you seek.

Here are the user stats. (he usually does them at the end of the month, so next week all of september will be up).

I updated the thread and user stats. This was definitely the busiest month ever, on every count.

What happened between March and April that caused such a huge surge in membership?

That would probably be the cover story on brills content, it came out in early april. There were a lot of little bits of press that happened at once during that period.

There was also a design change I instituted during that time. When you weren't logged in, at th end of each thread you'd see a bit of text that said "you are not logged in. if you'd like to comment on this thread, login or register here." After the membership surge, I axed it to cut down on new user signups.

(Not to mention 300-800 fake accounts created by people trying to up their ratings in the 5k.)

I think it has some to do with that for awhile the new user feature was turned off. I know that I personally have been a long time reader/lurker and that when I finally decided to join, it was turned off due to server strain. When it came back online, I joined immediately. I'm sure others did the same.
