Ways to improve My Comments functionality. December 1, 2005 7:34 AM   Subscribe

My Comments: 62 total comments. 31 since your most recent comment, last 10 shown below...

I find this kind of entry really useless on the My Comments page. The system works fine for smaller threads but large ones just take up space. If I haven't read the thread since my initial comment, the last 10 have no context here and I have to go read the original anyways. Ideas for how to improve it?

How about show the first 10 after your most recent comment and then have 'more' or 'next' button?

If you have been keeping up with the thread, the current system works fine. I like it. I would much prefer to see the last ten comments than the ten comments that were made after mine. Opening up the occasional large thread to read the intervening comments is fine by me. Of course with our growing ranks comes many more extremely large threads. Threads with more than 100 comments used to be rare. Now there is one, or more, just about every day.

Fine as is. Scroll past stuff you're no longer interested in.

I like how it is. It allows me to keep up with the conversation over the course the day (or a few days) without having to load the whole thread everytime. I only have to go to the thread if there's a comment I want to make. I would find it LESS useful to see the same ten comments everytime I look at the mycomments page.

I think which is more useful depends on how often you load that page. If you are using that page a lot, it's more desirable for it to show the end of a thread. If you don't use it as often (say once a day or less) it's less useful because, as smackfu described, you're missing the bridging conversation.

I think the ideal would be to show new comments since your last login. Barring that, I prefer it the way it is. The idea is to be able to keep up with the newest stuff in a thread.

I'd like to see "since your last comment" so if I haven't been keeping up with the thread I can just click on that.

I think oh pollo!s idea is the simplest way to make this even a little bit useful. As is I don't think I'll ever use it.

Could you have an option to toggle between first ten/last ten, to suit everyone?

Couldn't it keep track of when you last looked at it, like the front page does?

I think this suggestion is a godo compromise.

Show the most recent ten comments, but have a link to your last comment right on the mycomments page so that if you haven't been keeping up, you can go directly back to where you last commented. It would minimize scolling around trying to find where you left off.

Godwin.

Seriously, I like the My Comments. I just discovered its usefulness. If this thread didn't exist, I would have started a "Holy crap, My Comments is a useful new addition, Thanks Matt!" thread.

I do miss the short-lived access keys though. I use access keys on my own website and it's handy. [alt]+m loads up MeFi from my personal home page.

I'd like MyComments to have a link to my profile somewhere permanent.

Me too. The only change you will notice if my suggestion is taken is that a few words already appearing will be underlined. I hope that's okay.
