Which begs the question, what prompts you, after a three (or five) year hiatus, to return to this site & post something to the front page? Did you just find something so compelling that it had to be shared with this particular audience, 99% of which are completely different people than the ones you used to know when you were a regular here? It's just odd, is all.

You don't actually know much about Arabic, I take it. Opening Wehr's dictionary, I immediately see hazr 'estimation; conjecture.'

And jonson, I don't see why you didn't just ask ab'd al'Hazred inthread like I did (he said he'd been in Zanzibar, for what that's worth). I have no idea why you dragged in den beste, who did not "post something to the front page"—he made a single joke comment in a MeTa thread and has otherwise been silent for almost four years. This is yet another pointless MeTa post, and I will reiterate my nostalgia for Miguel's far superior pointless MeTa posts.

He was, among other things, a loud (blowhard like), politically conservative curmudgeon. He was among the original here who squared off against such greats like holgate, rodii, rcade, and rebeccablood. He is opinionated, loud, and at the time, extremely off-putting to many members here. He was told, on several occasions, to get get his own blog, which he eventually did, and found much success there.

I say this knowing I'm going to get flamed, but the political debates back in his day, though heated at times, often had a quiet respect shown by everyone, very much unlike today. IMHO, because there were far fewer active posters there, and many who actually knew each other, there was a greater respect for each other. Of course, there was name-calling, egotism, and such.

I think SDB was also the first to use MetaTalk as a venue for flaming out in a blaze of glory. I could be wrong about that, but I remember a thread where he really seemed to have lost it.

I wonder if matt is checking ip's and so forth to make sure dhoyt doesnt come back or that people are using multiple logins , it's really not doing anything for the site , i'm not much of a one for discussing things here but when you read a thread and you're not sure of who people are it really takes a lot out of it.
I vote for getting rid of abl whatever his name is , the mindgames are extremely tiresome , any chance of a ban matt ?

Sgt. Serenity seems too eager to ban people, just like DHoyt was. I say we ban him too.
posted by klangklangston at 3:56 PM on December 4, 2005

Maybe daily bannings, like the hanging that occurred during the 1600 and 1700s here in the States. One member a day until we purge the evil from our souls and repent for the sins we've yet committed.

Or not. Perhaps a moratorium on people calling for a ban instead. Why not try community, self-policing, and leading by example instead of the messiness of incising the soft belly that is the MeFi population.

you are so very rarely wrong, languagehat, that I genuinely surprised when I see it happen.

As for Zanzibar, it seemed like too brief of a response; I mean, join in June of 2000, post twice in June of 2000, take a five & a half year hiatus in Zanzibar, come back in November 2005 and increase your fpp total qty by over 300% in the space of a week?

Sometimes a search will take you to a 3-4 year old thread, and few or none of the user names are familiar. You click on them and review their histories and see they were quite active for six months or a year, then tapered off, or dropped off the face of the virtual earth. Or maybe they just generated so much bad blood they picked up a new user name? I wonder what the average active lifespan of a user is?

I hear Miguel's hidden himself away in an ancient baronial villa somewhere in Europe, feverishly pecking away at his now carefully seasoned Underwood mechanical typewriter (once owned, it is said, by Ernest Hemingway--a different Ernest Hemingway, though) and crafting, page by agonizing page, the novel that will transform Portuguese literature forever.

It will be called "One Hundred Years Of Solitude Interrupted By Frequent Calls For Cocktails and Cigars, And For Somebody To Turn That Bloody Joe Jackson Shite Down"
