Can I use this thread to point out that the HTML markup used for addressing comments is hella invalid? According to the HTML 4 spec, “ID and NAME tokens must begin with a letter ([A-Za-z]) and may be followed by any number of letters, digits ([0-9]), hyphens ("-"), underscores ("_"), colons (":"), and periods (".").” NAME tokens across this site begin with digits.
I'm just guessing now, but maybe that has something to do with why these links directly to comments don't always work like they should?

Ahhh... I wondered why MT insisted on stuff like c00012345 and comment-12345.
The links don't work like they should because people put images into their comments without width/height fields. What you're seeing is the browser reflowing the page as it loads content.

Those are cute usernames, but really not all that good for online discussion (especially the nonthreaded kind) because they're hard to write out compared to nice, short handles.

No, it's because of img tags without a height attribute.

I'm sure the dyslexics out there will appreciate the irony of your post :-)

I noticed this in action the other day in an AskMe thread I can't find right now where people were responding to a user with a handle of the form "*, man". For a moment I thought the thread was taken over by surf dudes when people started saying things like "I agree with *, man."

The first time I've enjoyed a "someone wins!" comment. Irony truly is that thing it's supposed to be.

The first time someone addressed me as 'RIB' I had no idea what they were talking about and assumed that in some way, they were insulting me. I cried, verily, but in a manly way.
