Can I post this? December 13, 2005 1:20 AM   Subscribe

Some friends of mine were stuck in a New Orleans during Katrina, and shot a documentary on HDV centering around the Superdome as shelter. They have a page up for the film, with a trailer and stills and whatnot. These are friends of course, and I've worked with them in the past, but I was not involved in this project. Would this be appropriate FPP material, or would it be dangerously close to a self-link? Or, for that matter, would a FPP about a movie trailer just suck to begin with?

I say post it. I don't think there are any movies about NOLA yet, and we might as well get started.

Or at least post it here, and then one of us can do it.

Post it. Its not a self-link, and it sounds like this isn't just another movie trailer.

"Some friends of mine were stuck in a [hotel in] New Orleans during Katrina"

Here's the link. They've also posted some raw footage.

Do they have the bandwidth covered?

The rule of thumb I posted in another thread is this "If it's not your project, or your webspace, or a project that links heavily to your webspace, or links heavily to you, or was already linked heavily FROM you, it's likely okay." So, if your name is all over their website but not on this project in particular, it might not be worth the hassle. Also, as gsb says, make sure they can take the bandwidth hit.

The video is amazing, it should be an FPP.

anything which helps to reawaken people ought to be posted. katrina needs to be rammed down bush's throat every time he opens that insipid mouth. nola has faded from view, nothing is getting better, and bush is again walking away from yet another immense fuckup simply by not talking about it. not to get all political about it or anything...

I agree with the above comments that it's not a self-link so OK on that front. As far as a link to a movie trailer, a link to a trailer for a major studio release would be bad because it is either something that most people have seen before, or something that most people will have seen very shortly, regardless of whether it's posted or not. But this doesn't run afoul of that standard either, so I say go for it.

This really looks fantastic. Good on your friends.

Tell the truth. They were down there to shoot a "Girls Gone Wild" segment, weren't they?

Sounds better than the crap we've been getting lately.

Post it.

You can always ask a friend to post it on your behalf. This is the traditional way. I'm always willing to do just about anyone the favor, but sheeit, brundlefly, you don't even have to ask.

Post it. Good links are good links.

nola has faded from view - quonsar
Yeah. I heard more about the aftermath of Katrina watching an NFL game last night that I've heard on from any administration official on any newscast in at least a month.

brundlefly: Why not Projects?

If this is okay, I'd have to say that anything goes.

O.C. I don't think what you linked too was "OK" just that it had been ancient history by the time the self linker (totally oblivious to the rules) outed himself.

Anyway, yeah I'd say post it to projects if you're not sure.

so uhh. what codec do I need to view this?
posted by freudianslipper at 8:18 AM on December 13, 2005

Appears to be MPEG4. QuickTime will display it. Don't know what Windows CODEC you need, but i know I used to be able to view MPEG4 videos on a default Mandrake install.

I vote for post. It looks quite good.

Put it on projects (but make sure you have a link to the actual site, I don't see how to get to that), and someone will post it for you. Better to do that than put up with the grief from people screaming "self link! self link!"
posted by lodurr at 8:34 AM on December 13, 2005

... but whoever posts, please to posting back here so it doesn't get doubled?
posted by lodurr at 8:35 AM on December 13, 2005

Post it to projects, that's what it's for.

Projects it is! #1 has spoken. First I'll drop James a line, and make sure he has enough bandwidth. Thanks for everyone's imput!

They were down there to shoot a "Girls Gone Wild" segment, weren't they?

Ha! Not quite! They're locals, although they were prepping to shoot a touristy vampire flick. FQ goth babes in skimpy outfits. That kind of thing.

well, that explains their choice of fonts.

Huh. I thought Projects was for members to post their own work. I also wouldn't have thought there was any problem with brundlefly posting it on to the blue, since it isn't his or her project/site. I'm confuzzled.

taz, it's ok if you're roughly connected to a project, though ideally, the creator would be posting it.

I just watched the trailer and liked it, and posted it to MeFi. The cycle is complete.
