Sorting Popular Favorites June 19, 2006 7:37 PM   Subscribe

Could the popular favourited posts and comments be listed in chronological order instead of by number of "votes"? As is, it's difficult to single out what's new and fresh -- which would make the whole page much more useful (not that I don't love revisiting the Sketchzilla thread).

Seconded.

Why would a list of most popular be sorted by date?

I suppose I could do most popular per day, but a popularity list is typically sorted by most popular first.

Because it's very useful to know what's popular lately in order to filter the filter. Otherwise I might miss all sorts of great things. Therein is the value of doing most popular per day in addition perhaps to most popular overall.

I thought this wasn't supposed to be a popularity contest. Maybe I'm just too worried about losing.

Why would a list of most popular be sorted by date?

Well, the page title is "Recent Favourites"... but looking at the page, at a glace, there is no way to know which ones are, in fact, most recent.

it's been my impression that this favorites page stays the same for days at a time and nothing changes

Maybe a button that changes a sort order?

Having the page be all-time favorites seems like it might create a self perpetuating samey list of favorites, if people who click that list add those things to their favorites lists... it's like favoritism in favor of the favorites!

If I were looking for something I felt was useful related to favorites, it would be favorite posts made in the last 2 (or 4, or whatever ends up appropriate) weeks... and from that page, there would be a link to all time favorites if I really felt like seeing that too...

The "recent" part of the page is that the votes are recent, but yes, if someone votes for the 72nd time today, an old link that got 71 favorites last week will resurface. I suppose I should change it so that the favorites window is only looking back 24 hours, so ignoring say, the 71 favorites last week and counting an old popular link as a 1 today.

When we discussed this same thing in the context of 'fantastic' flags, I suggested user-selectable time frames in a dropdown : popular today, popular this week/month, all-time popular.

I re-suggest this, aware that it would probably be expensive in database terms.

How about matt just provides us with a query editor so we can do whatever we want (read only, of course)

Also: RSS feeds of contacts' favorites? (two of them, one for posts, one for comments) Please?

I think the way to do it is to time-stamp the favorite votes and give them about a 2 week expiration (not 24 hours, that's too fast).
