Favorites now displayed on profile page. June 25, 2006 7:16 PM   Subscribe

Your user page now tells you how many of your contributions were saved as favorites by others, and there's a page showing you the favorites. Yes, I'm aware that the stuff saved as a favorite by multiple people gets repeated. I'll fix that this week. For the moment, it at least gives you an insight into what others liked that you wrote. Here's my user page showing 148 things I wrote were saved as favorites, and here they are.
posted by mathowie (staff) to Feature Requests at 7:16 PM (52 comments total) 2 users marked this as a favorite

Neat. Although, now I know that the only things I have ever said or posted that anyone thinks are "favorites" are on MetaTalk and not on MetaFilter itself. Maybe I should work on that.

Could we get a list of who marked our stuff as favorites, so that we know who to spare (when the revolution comes)?

Also, could we get a list of who has the most contributions marked as favorites? (updated every second via an RSS feed with user photos and home addresses so we can kill off our competition)

The people who ran slashdot were always woried that quantifying things like this would turn the site into a "game" But then again, the people who ran slashdot were idiots.

Also, it seems like each favorite is listed, not each thread. For example, on my page the same link shows up over and over again.

OMG! You all like me! You really like me!

But not as much as you like others. Hmph.
posted by sourwookie at 7:42 PM on June 25, 2006

Additional Pony: Could we get ourselves excluded from the list of people that marked our own contributions as favorites? Currently if I mark my own posts as favorites, it gets added to the list, and that doesn't really seem kosher. (Yes, in the sense that there is a rabbi involved somehow)
posted by blue_beetle at 7:43 PM on June 25, 2006

Also, formatting is stripped. this comment of mine doesn't show the fact that 90% of the content is a quotation, making it appear I said that stuff.

He addressed this already: "I'm aware that the stuff saved as a favorite by multiple people gets repeated. I'll fix that this week."

Matt, can you add the ability to tell who faved a comment? If only one person has faved it, currently there's no way to tell who that person is, unless I'm missing something...am I? And I see, for instance, on your post called Miguel Cardoso section in a Portugese bookstore, where it says 2 others marked this as a favorite - when I click that link it shows a total of two, but the wording (2 others marked this as a favorite) indicates that there are three people who've faved it. So are there really 2, or 3?

For post, click through to the post and click "x users marked this as a favourite"

For comments, no idea, and I was just about to ask. Matt?

It dosen't show who marked them as favorites. Maybe I'm being vain, but I'm kind of curious who I reached those 6 times (out of 10000+, what a shitty batting average).

That's definitely very nice. I did notice a small bug, though. In mine, one of my posts was faved 8 times, and it's also listed 8 times. (I don't know how hard that would be to fix, however; depends on how your database is organized.)

Now we just need a new Metafilter contribution index calculated as Comments Favourited / Number of Comments Made.
posted by Jimbob at 8:28 PM on June 25, 2006

Yeah, I'll fixed the repeated favorites and have the same thing for comments that I have for posts, showing who all marked an item as the favorite.

I just thought I'd show what I had so far, but I'll finish it up in a day or two.

There's lots more stuff coming, like a number of favorites on comments within threads, just like how threads show you "8 people marked this as a favorite" etc.

Well comments made after the favorites feature was added.

Regarding seeing who favorite your stuff: It would sort of be an invasion of privacy, but you can see what people favorite by looking at their user page. So I say add it, because I'm curious.

A question - is the "Contributions from [username] have been saved as favorites [foo] times" line not supposed to appear if no one has saved any of your comments as favorites? I'm not seeing it in my profile. The other categories [comments and posts made, favorites marked, etc.] still show up, even if the person has made no comments, marked no favorites, etc., so it seems a little strange that this one wouldn't.

Also, a small pony - why not list how many of a user's AskMe answers were marked "best" as well?

As a special gift I marked every comment in this thread as a fave.

Yeah, I'd love to see who favorited individual comments of mine; also, I noticed that of the 3 comments I've had favorited by anonymous strangers, one of them was actually deleted by the cruel hand of fate (jess/matt). So, just by way of saying that's a bug: matt, have the system check to make sure the posts/comments still exist in the live (non deleted) db before counting them.

At risk of seeming like a suck, I've got to say that I'm really reassured by what you're doing with this stuff, Matt. I'd lost faith there for a while with the flagging thing (which I still think needs a rethink) and some other decisions I couldn't see the IA wisdom in, but once it's bedded down, this is going to have so many positive-reinforcement knock-on effects, even with the minor gaming that'll no doubt go on, that I can't see but having it steer the site back onto a path where people take real pride in posting good shit and making great, substantive, or just genuinely funny comments. I'm all excited and shit.

Also, kudos for staying relentlessly old-school, and not going all ajax-y with this stuff, as tempting as it probably is (and as much sense as it makes for some things). Not that ajax effects and gewgaws are bad per se (*waits for the backlash to kick in*), but they're very flavour of the month, and that's never a good bandwagon to jump on. At least right away.
