And POOF, it's gone.

Seriously, unless she dies horribly and you have video of it, can we just stop it with the weekly look at Coulter's same old bullshit?

Buh-bye!

Actually, I just finished writing a post on that thread about how we should all do that very thing: ignore her. Just as well the thread is dead.

But I wonder if the opposite is true: the more exposure she gets, the more her insane bullshit is shown to more people, the faster her demise will happen. She truly doesn't speak for the majority of Americans (and don't talk about book sales to me: a best-selling book is in the hundreds of thousands, and the US is much bigger than that).

I dunno. She'll fade eventually, but more exposure just might accellerate that process.

Thanks for deleting that...its almost as bad as when Air America gives airtime to stuff O'Reilly says, as if its even worth refuting him.
posted by rsanheim at 6:08 PM on July 27, 2006

But as I said in the thread, it's incorrect to say that fringe media like Air America gives her air-time. She went on Hardball which, as far as I can tell, is about as big as it gets for cable news.

I'm not upset that the FPP was yanked, but the argument that if only we'd stop talking about her she'd go away is completely false. Mainstream media rubs our noses in her (eww. I could phrase that better but the image is highly disturbing/amusing).

The link in the post went to a page on an NBC website. Deleting the post reduced traffic to that page. Reduced page traffic will play at least some role in determining how much attention NBC (part of the mainstream media) pays to Coulter.

MetaFilter ignoring Coulter won't make her go away, but it can't hurt, and may help.

Well, it's a good illustration of Coulter's intellectual level.

Hey Clinton! FAG!

I thought exactly that same thing when I saw the story somewhere else. No one needs an update on the latest sewage she's spewing - certainly not on MeFi.

... and POOF, here we are discussing Anne Coulter right here and now. Life is grand.

Well shit. Where am I going to post this?

Actually I think someone like Coulter needs an opposition. The times we're living in are crazy enough where some people will actually tune in and get their rocks off listening to her. Others on the fence might come away with a talking point or two.

I know she's a joke to the People's Republic of MetaFilter, as is Rush Limbaugh, but step outside the bubble and you find lots of folks who think she's this only-somewhat-zany maverick who just has the guts to say what others are afraid to.

OUR ignoring her won't make her go POOF anywhere. Frankly, I think we should strive to rank for "Ann Coulter" in Google, if anything.

Really? I think our lavishing attention and derision upon her will only reinforce her fan base, and possibly attract more people to her.

Considering most of the comments here are less than lofty or factbased - "She looka like a man!" "I fucked Ann Coulter in the ass, hard" ad nauseum - it makes it look as though we don't have any substantial criticisms against her, just a gut reaction grudge and the usual Godless lefty pottymouth slander.
posted by Alvy Ampersand at 7:36 PM on July 27, 2006

Yeah, it could go either way. I can certainly understand not showering MORE attention on someone like her, as long as we understand that a MetaFilter boycott is never going to dent their attention base.
posted by scarabic at 7:48 PM on July 27, 2006

Seriously, most people I know that like Coulter already think of people who don't like her as godless, liberal pussies. I'll take that label over one that actually attempts to seriously discuss what is her obviously complete bullshit.

We don't win any points for trying to "see her point" or "understand the merits of her arguments". Most of what she says is a big fucking strawman that is continuously changing to fit the argument (like O'Reilly).

Besides, how many bloody times can we argue the same woman, the same points, in a different fucking location? Seriously...she's a fucking 'bot at this point, nothing more.

I approve of deleting the thread, but I did want to point out how strange it is that she thinks uncontrollable hetrosexual urges are a sign of being gay.

She doesn't think that. She knows that saying that will get her more sweet, sweet publicity. You don't seriously think she believes any of that crap, do you?

I came to Metatalk straight from reading this article, and my first thought was "What's wrong with Coultonfilter?"

Never mind.

The people who like her certainly do.

It really doesn't matter what's actually running through her head. It's irrelevant. Her message, her tenacity, and inability to ever admit she's wrong creates an image that people believe in. A martyr for all Republicans to hike up on the cross anytime that anyone with an opposing viewpoint dares to question her.

And what PinkStainlessTail said.

What I think is really horrifying/fascinating about her Hardball appearance the next day (posted in the thread as well) is not her calling Al Gore a total fag, but Chris Matthews constantly fellating her (har har because she has a penis har har).

"You are a controversial lady. You write beautifully. You have a brilliant brain."

"I'm back in heaven. I think I'm on college tour again. This is the University of Hardball, here we are. We have Ann Coulter. Look at her, look at her, the picture of heaven. All brain, no heart. Just kidding!"

[On the "Clinton = ghey" appearance the night before] "You were immortal in that interview by the way."

Excuse me, but what is the "substantial criticism against" calling the previous president and vice president "fags"? What would you have us do, attempt to refute the assertion?

There are exactly two legitimate choices for responding to Coulter's complete bullshit. One is to mock her at the kindergarten level that is her stock in trade. The other is to ignore her. I suggest we do the latter, if necessary installing a "Coulter" line in the flag pulldown to make sure the next Coulter FPP gets pulled as quickly as possible.
posted by soyjoy at 8:40 AM on July 28, 2006

Ah, yer bein' disengenuous, but actually we share the same position. I'd prefer it if we ignored her and Coulter FPPs were automatically deleted. I wonder how much money Crooks & Liars has made for her?

If, as some folks seem to feel, it's their duty to combat her in the hallowed halls of MeFi, I would prefer that they do so by addressing and refuting her bullshit, a la The Fifth Estate, not by making a bunch of lame tranny jokes.

And yes, I know I commented in the deleted thread.
I was bored and figured it'd be on the chopping block anyway.

look, when her balls are perched on your chin, you'll think differently about the whole situation.

Since I didn't comment in the deleted thread, my argument has ten percent more rhetorical weight. Take that, Alvy Ampersand and your excessive-Coulter-attention-doling ways!

She's a proven and inveterate liar and she habitually proposes murder and illegal violence against those who disagree with her. Seems good enough to me. Oh, and she doesn't merely look like a man. She looks like an anorexic Tom Petty after raiding his older sister's closet. And it doesn't get much hotter than that, now does it?

So why even flog this dead horse by wasting precious blue space on her? Everytime you* make a Coulter FPP, she gets stronger.

And leave Tom Petty out of this.

*Not you, Decani, but the "Only you can prevent forest fires" you.
Yeah, you!

Oh and: I'll get you soyjoy, and your little 10%, too!

He may not be stupid. He may be into the whole anorexic Tom Petty thing, that's all.
