I assume he wasn't? Too bad. Still, what a great callout.

Matt, you evidently missed a nice present this evening. John Hodgman--writer, actor, hobo historian and all around expert--called you out at his book reading tonight in Powell’s saying a friend of yours had asked him to pass along a present.

Photos were taken by others, perhaps they will be posted?

aw crap. jessamyn said she mailed hodgman a sign that said I'm Not Matt Haughey. I figured he probably doesn't read his snail mail and I bet the reading would be super crowded tonight. I should have gone, but I decided to have a quiet dinner with my family instead of braving the crowds at the event.

I ♥ Powells. Now you all should too.

That's ok. It is almost always better to feed your stomach than your ego.

(Not a qualitative statement. Happy birthday, too.)

So. Because of that link I just thought to look up Matt on Wikipedia and found him and Jessamyn. Where's the pic of Jessamyn? I want to know what she looks like!

IndigoRain, try here for Jessamyn pics. She's also got a bunch of stuff up on Flickr.

My hipster birthday present!

jessamyn said she mailed hodgman a sign

Actually, this is what I did

- read on your del.icio.us links that you'd be there [the internets lied to me!!1!]
- emailed John to see if he'd do me a favor
- he wrote back saying "sure" and that he likes MetaFilter but I'd have to get a sign to him in advance & remind him
- called Powells to figure out how to do that
- made a sign & faxed it to Powells
- emailed a reminder
- waited... waited ... waited.

Gosh I hope a photo winds up here.

Okay, so you know that total nerdgasm you guys had when that Apple guy showed up here last week? I'm having that now.

(Which goes to show, speaking of Apple, why those ads with Hodgman are so badly conceived. You're supposed to find the *other* guy more appealing?)

So John Hodgman and Dave Gorman both read Mefi? Were we always this hip?

From Jessamyn's Wikipedia page:

In 2002 Library Journal identified her as a "mover and shaker."

It's kinda sad that I only know him as that guy from the apple commercials. Is the mac guy famous too?

We were hipper when nobody read Mefi. Now we are just pancake shoutout sellouts.

The Mac Guy is apparently an actor called Justin Long, who was on the TV show Ed and in the movies Dodgeball and Galaxy Quest.
posted by anastasiav at 7:03 AM on October 11, 2006

Oh wow. He was the supernerd kid in Galaxy Quest! I knew I knew him from somewhere. Boy, those ads are even more amusing with subtext.
posted by CunningLinguist at 7:09 AM on October 11, 2006

Long was also in Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show and was amusing. He does a good Vaughn impression.

I think the "Apple guy" CunningLinguist referred to upthread is Steve Wozniak, not the actor who is currently appearing alongside Hodgman in the Apple ads.

so, who is he?

Dude, he's the junior senator from Nebraska that's been getting young people excited about politics again. Senator Hodgman's wry yet heartfelt "Voting is Dangerous" campaign has really connected with the 18-25 crowd, a typically apathetic bunch. Where the hell have you been that you missed all this?

People I saw at powell's, circa 1993-1996:

-Bruce Sterling
-Natalie Goldberg
-Douglas Coupland
-Stewart Brand

Now I go to the local Borders, for lack of a real bookstore within 45 miles.

Douglas Coupland

I feel compelled (for no good reason) to mention that the girl at U of Waterloo in Microserfs would have been in my class, given the dates in the book and had she really existed.

Douglas Coupland keeps writing about my life, although he isn't quite aware of it.
