Error messages beget post October 18, 2006 9:05 AM   Subscribe

I posted this and got a timeout error message. So I tried again and got a different error message. But on the third try, I got the message telling me the link had already been posted. So one of the two attempts that generated an error message actually worked.

I only saved a screen grab of the first one.

The second one was different.

The same happened to me yesterday. This does seem to happen at times. Just go and reload the front page to see if your post was accepted if it happens again.

"Robust Exception" is Cold Fusionese for "your post sucks".

It's the relational database version of web rage.

I had troubles trying to upload a song to Music yesterday. Tried a couple of different things with no luck. <— useless data point

I have to upload tracks to Music in IE for some reason. The MIME type firfox uses doesn't agree with the server. *shrug*

Hey, hey, callouts go into their own threads. I see bugs, I report them. There's no siren-warning-light waving people off from filing bug reports.

Plus, I don't suck. CF sucks. And I'll cut off my hand if you can prove otherwise.

What would an expected error be, anyway?

I didn't say that you suck. I said your post sucks. And yeah, CF sucks a whole lot. But your post sucks even more!

This comment may exceed the RDA of suck.

All this sucking is distracting.

"What would an expected error be, anyway?"

Usually an error in logic. Like you would expect when arguing with a Republican.

>"What would an expected error be, anyway?"

I was pondering that the other day.

One example, I suppose, would be a network timeout. If your browser makes an HTTP request to somewhere.com and after a minute, nothing's come back, that's in the category of 'stuff that happens from time to time'. Networks are like that.

Okay, that actually makes sense, although I do like crash's answer a little better.

That error would only truly be expected if you knew before you made the request that it wasn't going to work. if it's just "stuff that happens from time to time", it may not be surprising, but it's still not specifically expected.

Overly pedantic? Me? What do you mean?

Certainly not unexpected.
