Where do Metafilter people meet their mates online?
posted by MeetMegan to MetaFilter-Related at 2:28 PM (171 comments total) 13 users marked this as a favorite

I'm interested in meeting (with romantic overatures, of course) men who are like those who use Metafilter - geeky, smart, sweet, caring, and opinionated. Where do I find my MefiMate? What social networking sites should I be using? Match, eharmony, and MySpace aren't cutting it. Craigslist seems a little skeezy when I've tried it - never seen so many pictures of penises in my life.

What about the -- I think it's Spring Street? They run the personals on The Onion and various other sites. (Maybe Salon.com?)

I know two different geeky people who met people through them, so maybe an option?

Someone asked a very similar Q on AskMeta once. (And look, the second commenter is me! How ironic).

The number of couples who met at Metafilter meetups or via Metafilter channels (IRC, e-mail, etc) is really astonishing. 5 come to mind without having to think hard about it (well, it's easy when 1 includes me!).

That said, posting this might get you some dates. Go for it, lady! :-D

Yeah, I asked a very similar question recently. I didn't specify that I was looking for MetaFolk but by asking it here, figured it was implied. Based on the responses I got, I signed up for Consummating but never really understood the commenting thing and got frustrated really quickly. I also signed up for OK Cupid after it was suggested, met a few people through there but none of them panned out. My current totally awesome boyfriend came to me through Craigslist.

I was found on a doorstep as a baby.

I was summoned forth from the darkest pits of the abyss; my coming was foretold by the darkness of a storm and the strangled rattle of a dying madman. As the rift was wrenched open, the foul effluence that preceded me spilled out and rose up as flies to devour the very land itself, seeding it with maggots and tainting it with scars.

And then when I turned two, I was given a kitten. Her name was Taffy.

And all was right with the world.

Ha ha, The Deej caught teh gay!

I met my wife in library school. I had a metafilter account and she did not. Then matt opened signups and the doors to passion were opened! Open signups saved my marriage.

The awkward part was when I suggested we bring in Monkeyfilter. Boy, some women do *not* freak that way.

I met my first wife in the holodeck. It was this really great jazz bar, smoky and pretty much empty. Just me, the boss and Minuet. Later, in an alternate universe, I named my son after the boss and Min died. Now, I just cruise on anyone. I mean it, anyone.

I met my first wife while fighting the Kilrathi. It was in this really great jazz bar, smoky and pretty much empty. Just me, the bartender, and her. Later, when the war ended, I named my son after Admiral Tolwyn and the Mrs. died. Now, I fly my ship and shoot at anyone. I mean it, anyone.

I farted anywhere, and I mean anywhere. But then I met my first mate's son in a smoky jazz bar. Mrs. Tolwyn is dead, he said. His mother; my first mate. Dead. Well son, war is hell, I told him. He knew that better me of course. I thought we could've been friends, no way though. Obviously time and experience builds walls. Unbreachable walls. When ever I break wind I think of Mrs Tolwyn and her only son. Though I never went back to that bar again, too many orphans.

- I think I want to get serious with this girl I met, how do I do so?
- tell me cool ways to propose
- looking for great wedding venues in x area
- seeking marriage counsellors in x area
- I need a good divorce lawyer in x area
- how to meet new people in x area

Rinse, repeat;-) But then with those of us who are prolific posters a look at out posting histories will tell you all sorts of things about the progress and events of our lives.

Much as I love the idea of a DateMe page for this site in some ways, it also gets me mildly freaked out. One time I did have a crush on a MeFite, and I started browsing his considerable posting history. It was fun for the first ten or fifteen minutes, and then I started to feel uneasy. I decided that that was not the way I wanted to find out that sort of stuff about him, and that I was losing interest anyway, and shut it down.

Sorry orange swan, many people have the same reaction to my posting history. 15 minutes tops, then boredom. Come to think of it, they react the same way to my conversations.

So MeFi is the seething cesspool of sexual tension and stolen glances that I always suspected it was.

I'm going for a lie down with a cold spoon now.

Ha, I just realized that the Internet is responsible for me meeting my boyfriend, in a very roundabout way.

On the f0reignexchange community on LiveJournal was a girl who posted "Exchange Comics", short comics about her exchange experiences. I found them funny and added her to my friends list.

I found out she lived in a residential college in Brisbane, Australia - I was moving to Brisbane for university and was looking for a place to stay. I was apprehensive at first (the college has a bit of a reputation) but decided to apply to the college for accommodation. I got accepted and moved in.

Around O-Week I ran into Mark, who also goes to the same university I went to - it was a different one from the uni my college belongs to, and there was a small group of us from this other uni. The first thing we talked about was how to get to uni from here! We became friends, and talked to each other when we saw each other.

In August our college held a ball and we both attended...things happened (there is a very long story in the Your First Kiss map thread on the blue) and we've been together ever since.

geez, the Internet is responsible for everything in my life, it looks like.

I paid $5 to get into MetaFilter and I got a wonderful geek who knows how to protect our laptop from bugs and how to connect televisions and dvd players and resets the blinking clocks after the power goes out and googles all sorts of stuff about weird foods to stay away from and finds funny gifts on the web like screeching caped flying monkeys and cows with rubber band arms and organized our entire financial situation into a multi-tabbed spreadsheet that he keeps meticulously updated so that we know when we can afford to put more cash toward the mortgage and can always find the answer on imdb when we watch a movie with an actor who looks familiar who we can't quite place and always shares the funny pictures of pugs he finds on the internet with me. And there are some other things worth mentioning too but those are too personal. And also he has really nice hair.

So I know i'm a broken record on this, but thanks, MetaFilter, and go go go to your local MeFi meetups! (And happy birthday, NortonDC!)

Who needs a soulmate when you have the internet...
I can do anything, with a little help from my friends, family, and the hive mind.
Children, grandchildren, and pets all give affection, and for loving I have a long-term lover.
All that and a government job in Hawaii. But now what?
Midlife, meh.

The idea of a dating angle to mefi is weird (DoMe is a great name though)...I already have a bad reputation because I've listed pretty much everyone as a "crush" under my contacts.

That being said, I'm on consumating, and a brand new member of the Impersonals. Stalk away!

The Deej, there are 5 or six of us in Montana, several in the Dakotas, and at least 3 in Idaho. As always, distance is our enemy, meetup wise. But anytime you wanna go plug gophers 'round Big Timber, I'm there.
posted by Wulfgar! at 3:56 PM on January 22, 2007

Woohooo gopher pluggin! Funny thing is, I ended up in the wrong state. I don't hunt, fish, ski, or snowboard. I do like the outdoors, and hiking/photography. I came here from Detroit, where guns were never used on gophers. :)

Next time I hit the road to Bozeman, I'll give you a shout!

(Funny Montana thing: people will complain about driving "all the way to other side of town" here in Billings, which is 15 minutes. But they think nothing of driving to Denver for a Broncs game.)

Oh I guess I could answer the actual question - got distracted by all teh funnie.

I met my darling girlfriend on the Salon(SpringStreet) system, but before they went and fucked it all up, pricing structure-wise. Maybe they have unfucked it since - I noticed the screwup about a year and a half ago when I went to try to transfer my unused credits to a friend somehow and discovered I didn't have any anymore.

Were she to suddenly come to her senses I am unsure where I'd find dates.
