Chat filter? February 20, 2007 5:35 PM   Subscribe

I read in a lot of Metatalk threads about this and that being "Chatfilter." So I looked around for this "Chatfilter" figuring it was just another section of Metafilter like "AskMeFi" or "MetaTalk". But it's not, it seems to be kind of a perjorative term for a lot of discussions that might prove interesting, but for one reason or another aren't appropriate for other sections of MeFi. So, uh, why not have a Chatfilter?

There are Metafilter-related channels on IRC for chatting. Try #bunnies or #tapes.

There's metachat.

Similarly, Metachat was started years back as an alternate place for informal chattiness. From the masthead text:

MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ.

To be clear, Metachat is not Mefi's dumping grounds; it's sort of Mefi's pajamas-wearing, phone-gossiping cousin.

(Yeah, I should point out that #bunnies is actually Metachat's IRC channel, not Metafilter's.)

Matt doesn't want to have to pay for bandwith and moderation of a MeFi chat room. Metchat really does feel a lot like an extensioin of MeFi, though.

Just remember that #bunnies is not officially affiliated with MetaChat, either.

Also I'd like to say I support a Chatfilter section of the site if/f it's for us to "chat up" "birds" we'd like to "pull".

Sure, there are hundreds of delicious recipes for chat papri, but isn't that a bit limiting? What about bhel puri? Think about the poor puri!

And that, folks, is why there is no chatfilter.

There are a lot of good places to go to talk more informally with other MeFites and at this point there's no reason to duplicate their efforts and bring another high-bandwidth tough-to-moderate subsite into existence.

Cortex that is a perfect description.
I nominate that for new MeCha masthead.

I love being the exception that proves the rule. Or that causes the rule to be needed. Or being made an example of. Actually, I'm not sure what I love.

Except we usually forgo the pajamas, and gossip by telegraph.

I should warn any other ladiez that #tapes seems to be a boyz club at the moment.

You might want announce yourself, lest you walk in on scrotums ablazing.

Yeah, my visit to #tapes tonight was the only time in my internet life when people assumed I was a dude. :P

#tapes seems to be IS a boyz club at the moment. ALWAYS.

Fixed that for you. There are a lot of funny and interesting folks there, women included, but the sensibilities tend towards the dragging scrotums through the underbrush, iirc.

#tapes isn't even a boyz club so much as an insane, vile, disturbing club. I really like it there, but, seriously, lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate and shit.

Wear good boots.

Dragging Scrotums Through The Underbrush is a totally METAL name for something. Not sure if it'd be a band, an album, or a song, but it is teh Rock.

Sadly, IRC disturbs and frightens me, so I am stuck merely imagining the pelvic meltdown that the #tapes Total Testosterone Experience must bring.

I'm fine with vile and disturbing. I often say things out loud that put other people off their feed for weeks. Meeting others of the same mindset is rare enough that I thought anyone looking for "ChatFilter" ought to be... well, warned.

Blazing Scrotums was Brooks' best movie, IMHO. Much better than the overrated Young Frackenstein.

I spend more time in #tapes then I do anywhere else. It is a boys club only in the sense that we talk about the dark underbelly of MeFi more then you'll see in the grey. We are a lovely bunch of chaps who get on well with each other and make fun of one another in the way that only total strangers can. Plus, we can be sensitive to feminine issues too:

Jimbob: lunar cycles
Jimbob: that time of the month
Jimbob: aunt flo visiting from the coast of uterus etc.

See? We're not so bad. In the words of a fellow taper...

Wedge: A++++ RECOMMENDED!!!!!
