Dear Y2Karl, For someone who is so pacifist/gun control you sure are a bully about the amount of front page real estate you use to make a post. Was that paragraph so important? Do you have to ram every point down our throats? WE GET IT. YOU HAVE AN AGENDA. PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE WHO VISITS THIS SITE UNDERSTANDS YOU DON'T LIKE BUSH. It gets freakin tiresome. More inside is your friend.

I like a lot of y2karl's posts. I do find that the big blockquotes break up the page in a way that I (and maybe others) find sort of jarring. I also think that linking to Google search results in a FPP isn't strictly kosher. I'd like to see y2karl get his own blog, but there aren't any rules against the way he interacts with MetaFilter generally. You can always flag him and you can always move on.

Oh, he's mellowed with time. In the days before he got his meds regulated, he would have put that much and more in title tags. As for front page real-estate, eh, the mods will edit him down to the nubbins if it's really that much of a crisis.

But I can tell you this much, no lie -- no amount of yelling, bullying, screaming, ranting or caps locking will ever make that guy change his ways. In fact, all you've done here is add fuel to his fire.

My only request for y2karl would be to moderate as much as possible the size of said quotes. I know it can be hard to edit a key passage down past a certain breaking point of brevity vs. clarity, and I'm certain he makes the effort, but a little bit less text on the front page would make a difference to me.

I don't know what my internal tipping point is for Kind Of Annoying, but the block text lands on either side of it from post to post.

The content seems to be damned good—I would in darker disposition lay with my righteous sword a bloody swath through most news/poli/military posts on the front page and still leave y2karl's standing—so putting up with his idiosyncratic (and, importantly, not often emulated) style seems like a reasonable thing to do.

Dave Faris writes "In the days before he got his meds regulated, "

Dave Faris writes "Karl, call your doctor."

Dave Faris writes "Oh, now I understand why you used big letters in your metatalk post. It's a handicap thing."

Dave, your ad hominem attacks, implying that another member of the community has medical problems are completely out of line. Even if true (which I doubt), it's none of your business and entirely uncivil. If false, it's also libelous.

It's insensitive and insulting to people real problems and handicaps. It reveals that you're incapable of addressing Karl's arguments and so have to stoop to mud-slinging invective and attempts at personal destruction. It's simply and unequivocally low, slimy, and wrong.

It doesn't belong here. It doesn't belong here about Karl, or about anyone else -- I'd protest as strongly if someone had insulted, for example, dios or anyone of any political stripe, the way you've attacked Karl.

You owe Karl, and you owe the community, an apology. Until and unless that's made, I don't consider you a member of this community. I won't read your posts, or answer your askMefis, and to the extent my opinions are respected here, I encourage others to do the same.

You're behaving very poorly; either man up and apologize or go away from here.

But yeah, y2k's a bit of a sacred cow around here. Good luck with that.

And yes, I'm on record saying political posts are the very worst of MetaFilter (leading to n00bs who for some reason think this is a political site, gee I wonder why?). It's like a circle jerk that anyone can join, and the longer it goes on, the more masturbatory it is. You know if you actually look at y2karl's FPP history the assertion "every goddamn week with the same fuckin post" falls apart pretty quickly. Depending on how you slice it... say posts about Iraq, he posts about it often, but not really to excess, since late last Oct, 34 FPP, seven about Iraq. If you expand that to anything remotely military/national policy related you get a number closer to 50%. Hell, a significant number of his posts are about music. I think the comparison of grabbing lapels and screaming into someones face applies more accurately to this call out than y2karls posting style... which given the actual statistics is what this post is really about, you don't like someones posting format. Asking nicely may have gotten you much more sympathy then flailing about making inaccurate statements in a belligerent tone. Heaven forbid you should email y2karl and say, "Say, I appreciate you feel strongly about XYZ, but the way you format you posts makes them hard for me to read, is there any way I could convince you to drop the blocktext on the front page in the future? Thanks karl"

Haruspex, Matt filters hex or decimal entity codes for good reasons. You can either used the named entities, most of which he'll allow, or even the character directly (which is what I do). (Note that U+2019 isn't the right typographical glyph to use for a contraction, IIRC. But I guess it's better than that tick. I don't bother with contractions, though.)

Then the war politicized him and he became shrill and repetitive posting (mostly) newsfilter crap. Worse, a lot of Mefites like newsfilter crap, so he gets applause for his sad slide. I blame Bush.

Not to take away from the good posts y2karl has made, but come on man, get some perspective. Retrieving links of work done by other (usually) non-metafilter people is certainly an artform but it is hardly, you know, worthy of the title, 'masterpiece'.

It's really nice to get (and give) pats on the back for finding some wickedly good material to hook people up with. Sometimes it comes in the form of a single quick link and sometimes it comes from prolonged research about a favourite subject. I've done both and in either case my role is not particularly amazing or even special ---- the people who make the extraordinary sites and fill it with wonderous content that keep us coming back here day after day: these are the people that are most deserving of the superlatives and accolades.

Hey you guys vronsky is the vice president of my fan club! Ease up!

I kinda see why he is annoyed. At first it kinda bugged me. But then sheer volume of facts emerged from those political posts that are some of my favorite resources now.

Vronsky. It is a plain fact the y2karls posts are consistently excellent if just a bit verbose. Now I don't just say that becuase I his politics align closely to mine.

The music posts y2karl does are phenomenal. In fact several other MeFites and myself have discussed that y2karl should be making MONEY from them somehow. They are THAT good. I have actually brainstormed with myself on how that might happen.

Now at times, like all of us he can be a bit of over-reactionary. At least he sides for the forces of good.

Also, with out I hope embarrassing him, as I understand it y2karl is using a much older PC than 90% of you and an older browser/text application that make it very difficult to get tricky with editing, copying, and pasting. There for his posts take a ton of fucking work.

PS. Yes. Y2Karl - I live less than three blocks from you. Now. Do not be afraid but unbeknown to you WE HAVE MET BEFORE. In fact I walk my dog by your apartment building just about every day. I know this seems like an awkward disadvantage; me knowing you and you not knowing me. Don't worry. Though my posts are very biographical I have an certain net persona that I prefer to keep. Even at the risk of netizens NOT liking me. So your cracks about Almost Live and Ann Coulter ... well don't sweat it... let's say I prefer you just be honest. I don't take any of this stuff personally. Funny huh.

okay, vronsky, I'll meet you in the bathouse, but this time, you have to be Robin. And leave the door open, I'm expecting a delivery of date bars and Ovaltine. (And if Dizzy wants to be the Riddler, let him, he's had a hard day in the kitchen)

But remember, Wendell may cause joint pain, nausea, head-ache, belly-aching or tallness of breath. You may also experience Muscle Beach, rapid drumbeats, and bringing in the sheathes. If you feel loquacious, call your doctor. Do not swallow anything whole while taking this pill. Under no circumstances yak while eating. Men can expect painful urination while standing, especially if you strike your penis on the urinal. Projectile vomiting is common in thirty per cent of statistics. Bowel movements may become the most fun you have all day.You may find yourself becoming a character on "Lost"; this would be a good time to beat up one of the show's writers. May cause stigma against Mexicans. May induce a tendency to compulsively repeat the phrase "WHAT THE FUCK MATT." This drug may cause visions of the Virgin Mary to appear in MetaTalk threads. If this happens, flag it and move on. You may feel a powerful sense of impending doom; this is because Matt is going to bring down the banhammer. Men may experience unimportance, but only during intercourse. Do not take this product if you are uneasy with y2karl. We are assuming you have had wonderchicken pox. You also may experience a growing dissatisfaction with life along with a deep sense of melancholy and a desire to shoot everyone at Virginia Tech - too late! WARNING: Wendell may cause you to yell out "Ow, my spleen!" for comic effect. Women often feel a loss of libido, yeah, I have that effect on women, stop laughing. Discontinue use immediately if your teeth are receiving radio broadcasts of Don Imus. You may experience "lumpy everything" syndrome, but we are actively seeking a cure.

Wow! I forgot him already! Awesome!

Just chipping in to say that I find the characterisation of y2karl's posts as newsfilter unfair; to my recall he links to substantive analysis from sources I wouldn't find by casual surfing. Those I read leave me better informed.
I also have no problem whatsoever with the formatting; if anything the variety on the front page is a bit of spice.
On balance, isn't it better to let minor annoyances slide rather than add to acrimony in a community?

Personally, I miss y2karl's old multi-link youtube music posts (which also took up a wee bit more than, um, their fair share of FP real estate) but he pretty much stopped making those after #1 came down on him, as I recall...

Then again, he probably couldn't have gone on with those too much longer anyway: I think he linked to almost everything good on youtube.

That would be most delightful. y2karl is one of the most interesting mefites.

Maybe I'm presumptuous, but I kind of assumed y2karl's posting style was done out of courtesy. The opening paragraph gives you the gist of what you'll find the FPP to be about (for easy skim-then-avoid, if that's your prerogative), and the format on the whole clues you in right away as to who wrote it and what the subject is likely to be. Whether it's aesthetically pleasing or not seems to me to be beside the point.

Man, 248 comments and I just notice this. Shows what gardening does for your online time.

I also think that linking to Google search results in a FPP isn't strictly kosher.`

Oh, shit. That was a mistake. Thank you for pointing that out.

It should have been Who Lost Vietnam ?

I had the Galloway review up and remembered that Record had an old article about the Vietnam War in a back issue of Parameters and Googled 'Jeffrey-Record Vietnam,' hoping it had been copied into a friendlier format. Then I clicked on and copied the Google link instead of the Galloway review link when I was composing the post.

Well, if a sympathetic mod reads this, could you please change it.

PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE WHO VISITS THIS SITE UNDERSTANDS YOU DON'T LIKE BUSH.

This stuff always cracks me up. I have posted about George W. Bush about three whole times--Frat Boy is SO dyslexic was one, there was one from the pre-title days about a flash animation talking GW Bush sockpuppet you could program to say anything you wanted (complete with, if I recall correctly, friendly dhoyt rhetorical question on 'how was that programmed?'), using snippets from his own speeches and something related to his 'service' with the Texas Air National Guard, and I never mention the guy in comments.

But I get this PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE WHO VISITS THIS SITE UNDERSTANDS YOU DON'T LIKE BUSH , evidently especially from the old school anti-Stalinist telepaths who can't tell the difference between the war in Vietnam and the war in Iraq.

Then, LarryC always shows up for these bullshit y2karl callouts, often complaining about the degradations of Newsfilter. Of course, if you look at his history, he comments in other people's newsfilter posts all the time and has even thanked me when the information in my post fit his politics. Hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue.

I could accuse him of stalking me if I thought that always commenting about someone in a MetaTalk thread devoted to them amounted to stalking. But I don't, so there it is.

I've got 21 posts so far this year, starting with 57556. As I write, the latest post is 60428. So, 2,851 posts have been made since my first post of the year and made not by me. Man, have I been hogging the site or what ?

I don't post that much anymore and comment even more rarely. But, evidently, when I do, the vronksies from the woodwork crawl out, screaming about how I HATE BUSH. Who is it that needs meds, again ?

Truth be told, vronsky, that was a tad over the top, but, on the other hand, other than The Wiki Trickster, I have not called anyone here names, certainly did not call them stupid, and other than pointing out the kettle black of you labeling anything anyone else wrote here as cliche ridden, I've tried to eschew direct derogation.

But, other than that one little zinger, what have I said to you ? Nothing. You made this post, you ran me down, you impugned my motives. And showing some heat in the process, you have called more than one person names and ran them down when they criticized you in the same manner. In reaction to being called out, you feel compelled to answer every sally.

Gee, it's not fun having people you've never met criticize you, is it ? And, gee, doesn't it look dumb when someone tries to try to duke it out with the whole room ? We all seem to remember this from time to time... and then we forget.

And you were on my case just a couple of days ago, if I recall correctly, accusing me, in not demonizing them sufficiently to your tastes, of eulogizing the 9/11 hijackers. And there were the comments concerning the gun control. And that post about the Vietnam war. So, it appears to me that I've gotten under your skin. And, to tell the truth, it came as no real surprise to see your name on this post.

This is the thing I have learned--it's always personal. People pay lip service to the 'community' but callouts by name are invariably personal.

Or personal and political. No one ever posts on MetaTalk about the format when the posts are about, say, documentary films, R.A. Lafferty, Paramount Records or Kids, the Internet, and the End of Privacy.

Someone got their panties in a twist about something said another time in another thread or two and stewed and stewed and then he made a dumb post and then got called on it and then got mad because all those people then said unkind things about himself--a nice person these strangers have never met. Not that he ever did anything like that to anyone here... How utterly unfair! Ding-a-ling, so it blows and all that.

Aw, vronsky, I was complimenting you! I heartily support more your mom battles.

I haven't been called dipshit since my little sister was eleven. Then we graduated to more creative insults -- I was always fond of "bristle-throated cunt." Anyway, as long as you're not chasing me with a buzzing cicada, we're good.

It's tempting "blazecock", but no dice.

And I am proud to be on your list juicecake. Whatever it is. I need some cake and juice right about now.

And EB, apologies, you thrusted, I parried, but wish I had just let you run me through.

And karl, nice theories, but wrong as usual. I have never read any of your political posts. Not one. Nor anyone's political posts. It is not what I visit mefi for. And the eulogy shit was one line, and not mean at all, if you go back and look. But I already said sorry to you, unlike your half assed apology for the cho remark, and if you had read my recent comment that I had family and friends who attended Va Tech, then shame on you, no wonder you are a bitter, lonely, unloved person. Let's agree to remain enemies shall we? Go sharpen your slingblade. Karl.

you are a bitter, lonely, unloved person.

You're now going on almost 30 hours of flogging your dead horse and you're calling Karl bitter, lonely and unloved?

Perhaps your time might be better spent talking with those friends and family who attended Va Tech. They may need you more than this thread does.

A while ago I started writing very short stories about the Kennedy assassination. It didn't really work out. Here's one:

Let's all go to the MOTHER FUCKING AIR SHOW! I hear they've got the biggest damn helicopters you ever seen, and they're made out of solid gold! I'm serious: they even run on liquid gold. Can you believe it? I do. They've also got a zeppelin, filled with a mix of hydrogen and nitrous oxide! They're having to fight off the huffers with sticks and fire hoses! The security guys are all like “Get back! It'll explode! You'll explode!” and the huffers are all like “We doan' care, mang, we jus woan git hiiiiiiiiigh.” It's totally true!

They've got that plane JFK died in. For reals yo, it turns out the Dallas motorcade was actually, like airborne? So Jack and Jackie were in this open cockpit sopwith camel which Jack was, by the way and just for your information, piloting himself like the stud he was. And all the people watching them were on these bleachers held up by hot air balloons. Big mothers those balloons, and they had the flag on them, which means they still have them hovering over Dallas to this day, 'cause if the balloon touches the ground that counts as the flag touching the ground.

Anyway, JFK is doing a celebratory series of barrel rolls for the crowd when suddenly BLAM BLAM BLAM his head is gone! The plane's going out of control, Jackie's totally losing her shit, nobody knows what's going on. As a last act of reflexive heroism, the President's headless body hops up on the canvas of the plane, pulls Jackie out of her harness, straps a parachute on her, hurls her screaming over the side, and then collapses dead.

About ten minutes later they find Oswald, moping in a personal auto-gyro, still clutching his rifle and just totally pondering the motherfucking magnitude of the shit he has just done.

I've resisted using the term "flogging your dead horse" towards karl this entire thread. Been thinking it the entire time though. Are you a russian telepath? Can you tell what I am thinking right now?

Wrong - I was thinking that you have a nice photo blog. Seriously. I bookmarked it. And good advice. And you are a good person spicynuts.

And my uncle, who attended Tech in the 50s has passed on. And I have been in touch with my friends, one is inconsolable right now. The other is more angry than sad. I am a little of both.

Keep milking it, baby. You got to grab what little fame you can by the teets and hold on tight, right? It's just like a rodeo... You're riding a wild bull! Except, it's on top... and female... And all the clowns are running all around, but they're trying to distract you, instead of the cow. It's like a bizarro rodeo.

y2karl: I don't like the question.

y2karl: How many you killed, vronsky?

vronsky: Five. I killed five of 'em. That counts a Mexican I killed. He come at me with a knife.

vronsky is a putz, no passion, just limp retorts. We can not have fun with putzes. We need virile young passionate types if we are going to have something to roast our marshmallows over. She calls everyone names, but fails to follow the thread and invoke true passion. Vronsky doesn't even get the mallow to start turning color. meh. This thread is dead, dead, dead I say. Blame vronsky for your uncooked marshmallows.

I feel bitter and lonely unloved!
And I envy, let us say,

It’s a pity
Such self-pity
Ends up in a pity party of one!
It's such a disgrace
To put egg on your face,
Then have everyone say ho hum

I got a little extra "more inside." I happened to look at y2's thread when not logged in, so I got the banner ad, right smack under the "posted by y2karl" byline. Which happened to be "SURRENDER IS NOT AN OPTION - paid for by McCain 2008."

For another 5 bucks, McCain can troll Metafilter himself.

OF COURSE SURRENDER IS AN OPTION, AS IS RUNNING AWAY, AS IS JUST DRINKING A WATER GLASS OF SCOTCH FOR BREAKFAST AND SPENDING THE REST OF THE DAY HIDING UNDER THE COVERS LISTENING TO COUNTRY MUSIC ON YOUR HEADPHONES. ALL THREE OPTIONS ARE BETTER THAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OR GETTING BLOWED UP IN IRAQ OR WHATEVER THE FUCK IT IS MCCAIN WANTS TO DO.

posted by nola at 9:21 AM on April 20, 2007

Unforgiven would be one of the bestest films EVAR, if Eastwood could direct actors... outside of the principals, everyone sucks in that movie, a buncha CanCon no-talents who totally squandered an opportunity to do something more than Honey Nut Cheerio Commercials and syndicated sci-fi filler crap.

The Wild Bunch is so freaking wonderful it makes me cry.
