Can the meetup listings in the sidebar be kept up for a few days afterwards so we can more easily find the pictures which were taken? Or should there be a separate category for this?
That's a great idea. I'm out in the middle of nowhere, and probably won't ever get a chance to attend a meetup, but I enjoy being there vicariously by reading the threads and looking at the pictures. Leaving the sidebar links up longer would definitely make them easier to find.

That would be a good idea. Perhaps with a separating line or some other kind of division showing past from upcoming.
While we're on the topic of ponies: Matt, could you consider changing the "[!]" used for flagging so that the anchor actually includes the brackets in addition to the exclamation point? The reason I mention it is that since the ! is the only "live" part that you can click on, you have essentially a very narrow strip of two pixels in the X-dimension on which to click, which is not always quick and easy to get the mouse over. If the whole thing was clickable it would be a lot simpler. The [+] doesn't quite suffer the same problem as + is a lot wider, but I think it'd be good to update both of them just for consistancy.

Oh, and who added Phoenix? I was going to repost that meetup with finalized details (after I hopefully get my carpool info today). Is there a way I can edit that?

Also, can newly added meetups be highlighted in some way?

Agreed. On my monitor, with my font size settings, it's 5 pixels for "!" (1 pixel for the "!", and 2 blank pixels on either side which are clickable), and 12 pixels for "+", but that's still not a lot of space.

Elide the whole need for headers—between the parens and the fact that the dates of those will have passed when you see 'em like that, it presents a fairly clearly distinction. Main downside as I see it is the lack of transparency to users unfamiliar with the meetup protocol, but this sounds more like a oldbie feature as it is: folks that know to go looking in meetup threads for photos in the first place will know to, you know, go looking.

I think I'll just add a "past meetups" below the list, showing them all listed in reverse chron order. It doesn't make sense to show stuff that already passed on the front page, or above the upcoming ones.

"folks that know to go looking in meetup threads for photos in the first place will know to, you know, go looking."
The hard-work solution would be to add a recent comments thing to the meetup sidebar a la the front page: (2 new). This would take care of cillit bang's "new meetups" thing (since meetups are listed in the order they're happening, not the order they're added, I can see his point). It would also take care of the "looking for pics" thing. I'm willing to admit that to those for whom function follows form and not the other way around it may look ugly.
