Twofer: Los Angeles and Portland meetups? July 14, 2007 9:23 PM   Subscribe

I'm visiting Portland, OR from July 21 to July 27, and it would be really groovy to meet up with some MeFites while I'm up there. Any takers? Suggestions on location and time welcome. Also, I'll be at the Grand Hallows Ball in Los Angeles on July 20, ready to get my grubby hands on my copy of Harry Potter and the Somethingsomethingwhatever. There's a good chance I'll be wearing a cape. Any LA peeps who'd like to join me would be good company.

...Huh. That had a paragraph break on preview.

Anyway, for Portland: my preferences are for somewhere quieter, slightly more upscale, maybe someplace with a pool table and/or squashy couches. Quirky / comfy / pub-type atmosphere preferred. Needs to be accessible by public transit. I can't do anything on the 21st, but the other nights should all be free.

Bad timing!

Love,

Everyone at Ground Kontrol.

fuzzbean, you should come to Dutton's on San Vicente (in Brentwood) for the Potter launch. It's WAY more charming, since it's a little indie bookstore (and one of the best bookstores in L.A., which is saying something given the size of the city). Dutton's was recently (literally, last week) spared destruction at the hands of condo developers, so you know it's an exceptionally magical place. Plus, you know, I'll be there.

:)

Yup, librarina, I know Portland is TEH MEFITE PARTAY CENTRAL right now...but I can't be there tonight, and I was hoping mebbe a few others would be up for another micro-meetup in a week or so. Am bummed about present lack of presence.

As long as it isn't on the 27th, I'll be there (wherever it ends up - but I still like the Club 21 suggestion). I'll even bore you with stories about Portland's long history of vice and human trafficking!

Portland's long history current trend of vice and human trafficking!

Fixed that for you.

I would also be down with Club 21...

I'm definitely interested in hanging out (but not available on 21 & 23). The description of Club 21 sounds cool to me. It's only about a mile from the Lloyd Center MAX station too.
posted by olecranon at 10:05 AM on July 16, 2007

It's no more than a 15-minute walk from the Lloyd Center Max stop. 10 blocks up NE Multnomah, lake a left, and 5 or 6 blocks south on NE 21st.

Look for the sign that says "Steaks for your enjoyment!"
posted by dersins at 10:20 AM on July 16, 2007

OK, what day for the Portlanders?
posted by sleepy pete at 10:28 AM on July 16, 2007

As someone who lives very close to 21st & Multnomah, I really like the idea of Club 21 for a meetup, but I can't do anything this weekend.
posted by croutonsupafreak at 12:06 PM on July 16, 2007

Since nobody else seems to be willing to suggest a day for Portland, I will suggest Monday 23 July. One week from today.
posted by dersins at 12:27 PM on July 16, 2007

Monday the 23rd sounds promising for both coined and me. And Club 21 seems the general favorite, so I'm good with that (it's also less than a mile from where I'm staying, so woo! for stumbling home.)
posted by fuzzbean at 12:33 PM on July 16, 2007

The 23rd sounds like an excellent day for beer.
posted by cmonkey at 2:51 PM on July 16, 2007

The 23rd sounds like a possibility (thanks for picking a date dersins).

Oh, maybe we should make this a Trivial Pursuit meetup. Those are fun.

Oh, wait-- up there where I said "It's no more than a 15-minute walk from the Lloyd Center Max stop. 10 blocks up NE Multnomah, lake a left"

I meant take a RIGHT.

Heh.

Oops.

I'll gladly pop in to Club 21 as it is pretty great and about four blocks from my house.

Know, though, that it is not very big and has no pool tables. If folks wanted a larger, slightly quieter, but equally semi-divey place, (with pool tables - I would love to throw down at some pool) I'd toss out the Nighthawk as a possibility.
posted by churl at 4:22 PM on July 16, 2007

Looks like there's a Max stop right next to Nighthawk (at N Portland Blvd.)
posted by JohnFredra at 4:35 PM on July 16, 2007

know, though, that it is not very big and has no pool tables.

Both of those things are true.

But it is usually very empty, and there are some very large tables. It would easily accomodate a group of 8 - 10.

If we think there will be more of us, then we may need to rethink our venue.
posted by dersins at 5:39 PM on July 16, 2007

Nice, I was just thinking it might be nice to meet some Portland Mefites in more conversational surroundings. Count me in for the 23rd.

Being a West sider I'm not all that familiar with the places you've mentioned but they sound fine by me. The only pool hall I've been to in town is the Rialto downtown, and their upstairs room is good for events, but may be too big for a small meetup (I think there are about five pool tables and a dozen small-to-medium table-tables).
posted by herichon at 10:08 PM on July 16, 2007

Delicious. A meetup that I'm not out of town for. Berbati's on SW 2nd has a nice large pool table section, but is smoky as hell.
posted by lilithim at 11:47 PM on July 16, 2007

May we also consider the Rock Bottom Brewery, or Henry's 12th St Tavern. Like herichon, I'm more together on the NW/SW part of the divide.
posted by lilithim at 11:50 PM on July 16, 2007

The Nighthawk is within walking distance for me and I still would rather go to Club 21, so that's another vote.
posted by sleepy pete at 11:51 PM on July 16, 2007

I just remembered that the Mash Tun on NE Alberta would probably be large enough to accomodate 10-15 people on a Monday night, it has a pool table, and it has a wide range of beer.
posted by cmonkey at 12:26 PM on July 17, 2007

Mash Tun seems pretty attractive to me, although admittedly further off than Club 21. Despite that, I'd vote for it if enough other people are interested. (The non-smoking is a BIG plus.) Any takers?
posted by fuzzbean at 4:44 PM on July 17, 2007

Proximity to my home makes Club 21 preferable to me, but I wouldn't be averse to Mash Tun, either.
posted by dersins at 4:54 PM on July 17, 2007

I love the Mash Tun like I love beer, so I totally vote for it.
posted by cmonkey at 5:41 PM on July 17, 2007

I'll be there for the 23rd and if anyone wants a ride, send me an email (I can fit up to three reasonably-sized folks).

I cannot speak well of Club 21 or Mash Tun (haven't been to either); current or future considerations may be Thatch Tiki Bar (they make a Donkey Punch drink but no pool tables) or Concordia Ale House (pool tables, smoking outside, and decent pub grub)
posted by hyperlith at 6:35 PM on July 17, 2007

Concordia is awesome and a local haunt of mine. I highly recommend it as it has a truly kick ass beer menu and quite decent food. Two pool tables that are decent but not great. Usually not crowded, but they have two sports tv's in there, so it kind of depends on whats on.

Unfortunately, I'm not likely to be able to make it. Possibly a bit later in the evening, but I've got something scheduled for 6pm that night already.

Where ever it is though, I'll try to swing by and see who's still there after I'm done.
posted by afflatus at 9:15 AM on July 18, 2007

So, Mash Tun on July 23rd, 7ish, just so we don't have to keep discussing it. Sound good?

Sounds good. Looks like there's a couple of bus stops right there. [21st and Alberta] [15th and Alberta]
posted by churl at 10:22 PM on July 18, 2007

Both bus #8 (which stops on 15th & Alberta) and bus #9 (which stops at 27th & Alberta) should go by your hotel, fuzzbean, and then it's a short walk up (or down) Alberta.

Groovy! Thanks for the directions, guys!

I know everything is all locked up for the 23rd, fuzzbean, but you might want to check out the new McMenamin's Back Stage Bar at the Bagdad on your own time. It's got multiple pool tables, 70 foot ceilings, is quite definitely unique with a lot of different "spaces", and is conveniently located just off SE Hawthorne at SE 37th, on the 14 busline. Cheers.
posted by truenorth at 10:51 PM on July 19, 2007

That looks cool, truenorth.

It's too bad it's a McMenamin's...
posted by dersins at 10:48 AM on July 20, 2007

Is there something about a McMenamin's I should know?
posted by fuzzbean at 2:48 PM on July 20, 2007

They're not, like, evil or anything. At least as far as I know. But all they serve is overpriced, mediocre food (or, in the case of the Bagdad, TERRIBLE pizza...) and overpriced, mediocre beer.

Beautiful spaces, though, almost all of them.

Every time they convert some really cool space I think "That's awesome. Too bad it couldn't have been done by someone who serves decent food and decent beer."
posted by dersins at 3:04 PM on July 20, 2007

Well, while I won't vouch so much for their food (pub grub, sometimes with a twist), McMenamin's does brew up some good house beers. Some of their food prices are a bit off, but you're paying for atmosphere as well.

The Kennedy School and Little Chapel of the Chimes are quite close to the Mash Tun, fuzzbean, so you can check out their aesthetic without a cross town bus trip. No pool at either place, though, except the soaking pool at the Kennedy, which you can use for $5.
posted by truenorth at 5:59 PM on July 20, 2007

i agree with dersins. even if they could just learn how to make good fries portland would be better off. they are nice enough to usually sell other people's (better) beer in addition to their own, at least at some of their places.

i also realized that i know dersins from seeing teh meetup pics. then i saw this thread and though, of course he wants to go to club 21.

no, but i'll be in town august 5th or so through the 12th. the mid-term plan is to move back, though, for sure.
