We used PieSpy to visualize the social structure of #mefi. Here's an animation of the last ten days.

Very cool. Do the lines get thicker when you reply directly to another person? The program must look for usernames mentioned in messages, right?

That gets the biggest weighting, but the bulk of the data comes from temporal information - who talks near in time to whom.

31d1 and brownpau game the system

Updated those links per yer request, dmd.

A few things occurred to me while watching that.

1. That was like that scene in hellraiser where the dude grows up out of the floor after some blood is spilled.

2. Cortex is such a flirt! Look at him, all talking to everybody all the time... with his... rock music. At least moift and limepi went and got a room.

3. I always imagined that #mefi is like MST3K for metafilter. With everyone cracking wise about the front page as new stuff happens. Tell me it's so.

4. so what does it mean when someone's way out on the end? Does it mean that they haven't spoken in a while, but remained in the channel, or what?

ok, that 31d1 v BP one is fascinating. how did that happen?
posted by shmegegge at 12:53 PM on September 13, 2007

I dig the part where it organically adjusts to form Goatse and then morphs into a pissing elephant.

I said something to everyone, and then bp started saying hello to everyone, and then i fought back, with panache but ruthlessly.

31d1: with panache but ruthlessly, indeed! well played, sir! bravo!

31d1 won. But winning at IRC bot gaming is like special olympics etc etc etc

Is this one of those things you would need an archaic chat client to know about?
posted by blue_beetle at 1:06 PM on September 13, 2007

Does this look archaic to you? If so, yes.

Whatever happened to the Jabber server?

3. I always imagined that #mefi is like MST3K for metafilter. With everyone cracking wise about the front page as new stuff happens. Tell me it's so.

I went in once and was greeted with a string of racist jokes.

Once is enough for me.

Does this look archaic to you? If so, yes.

It does to me, but then again I come from the year 2345 and was sent to tell Rod Johnson of 433 West 5th Street not to marry Nancy Billingsley on September 12th, 2007, wait, what's today's date? Oh crap.

I went in once and was greeted with a string of racist jokes.

Sometimes #mefi is kind of like what would happen if Lenny Bruce managed to get even higher than normal and exploded into about a dozen pieces, and then each of those pieces found an IRC client and started working on new material.

But a lot of the time it's just kind of goofy riffage. Not near as cuddly as #bunnies, mind you, but that's why IRC has multiple channels.

I just went into the IRC channel (this being my very first time on IRC) and was surprised. It's like there is this secret underbelly to the internet, and anyone can get in, but nothing makes sense unless you are an initiate.

Which I, most certainly, am not.

considering irc is a protocol and not a client I'm not quite what kind of retardation blue_beetle is spewing.
posted by cellphone at 1:31 PM on September 13, 2007

sure

Weird. I always thought that the IRC protocol was a client-server model.

Live and learn, I guess.
posted by eyeballkid at 2:13 PM on September 13, 2007

Ahh. Yes, here it is, from wikipedia.
Users access IRC networks by connecting a client to a server.
So blue_beetle would need a client to send messages using the IRC protocol.

retard.

Hey - I wanted to see what the dead of night looks like! Seems to skip the wee hours?

Finally home where I could watch this.

It resembles nothing so much as an animation of an illustration from a Stanislaw Lem book.

#mefi is just bizarre (went on for the first time a few minutes ago and then left after wtf norwegians and breast implants...)

#mefi hasn't been cool for lo this many years. That animation; however, is indeed the shit.

Ha! This thread has helped me to understand that I can double the effectiveness of my snark by including the word "archaic". I will endeavour to use it in all my future archaic conversations.

It's like there is this secret underbelly to the internet, and anyone can get in, but nothing makes sense unless you are an initiate.

I believe you're romanticizing the cesspool that is #mefi on slashnet to an unwarranted extent. It's nothing like 'metafilter in realtime' a la shmegegge's hope; it's a downright blight. Think SomethingAwful hopping around in pain after being castrated and attempting to shriekingly prove its insipidity credentials.
