Ask MetaFilter. It's a Punchline. November 14, 2007 9:43 PM   Subscribe

I DUNNO. ASK METAFILTER. A shoutout (in the company of some rather big web-names) from big-time webcomicker (and dead tree comicker), MetaFilter's Own clango.

I love, love, love Diesel Sweeties. And I think R Stevens is awesome, and the day I found out he was a fellow MeFite (thereby making stalking him a whole lot easier) was a real cool day.

Though I took issue with a recent strip in which he dissed Family Guy. Cause I think Family Guy is also awesome.

Still, yeah, this is a great comic and a nice nod to the community. How can you not love the guy?

PS: If you're reading this clango, how is your print run going?

"What's an Orkut?" is not an appropriate question for AskMetafilter. Flagged.

It's hard to sufficiently convey what a goddam dude clango is.

Wouldn't it be cool if at the end of every evolutionary stage, primitive man had to beat some sort of level boss?

Like, before homo habilis could become homo erectus, he would have to beat this little guy who runs around and throws axes and the more you shoot him the faster he moves. And before homo erectus could become homo sapien, he'd have to, like, kill this big evil mage with like 1000 hit points.

I bet wendell is wishing he had saved his weekly MeTa for this thread over on the Blue (which did not wendell).

I bet this because I know I sure wish I had.

Man, Ask Mefi is probably the best anecdotal education a boybot can ask for.

Effigy, you can love Family Guy as long as you don't mind me hating it. If it were silly little shorts without the pretension of being a "real" sitcom, it might be enjoyable!

Print's doing OK- I'm no Dilbert, but it's helping pay the bills and getting professional editing from this guy has been ridiculously useful. Seven years in this biz, never been edited before. It can be helpful.

Since you guys found and posted this like 30 seconds after the comic went up, consider me lurking in this thread if anyone wants to talk comics!

Consider it a deal! But you should check out the last two epsiodes of Family Guy if you want a "real sitcom" as they were not only a great two-part story, but the cutaways were few and far between.

Glad to hear your print run is going well though. I was reading and enjoying DS long before you 'sold out' (wink wink) and as someone who sold out himself, leaving a dream of cartooning behind to persue other goals, I was rooting for you to succeed.

Now, get back to making more excellent comics, you crazy comic-monkey! And resolve this Clango/Maura/Pale-Suzie love triangle storyline once and for all, dammit!

Holy crap -- I had no idea he was Metafilter's Own.
posted by spiderskull at 11:00 PM on November 14, 2007

I enjoy both Deisel Sweeties and Family Guy. So there. (I just think of the random cutaways as a neverending send-up of the lame clip shows every "real" sitcom does every couple of years. Seth MacFarlane does have one of those punchably douchey faces, though. I wonder if he's related to Glenn Beck or Richard Roeper or Carson Daly.)

Oh, I actually LOL'd at today's DS. Usually it's more of a wry smile. And then I came here to see if someone had posted it. As we're bigging up R Stevens, I might as well throw in how awesome his collection of print comics is, especially if your local paper doesn't have DS in syndication.

For some reason, several years ago, DS fell out of my webcomic reading rotation. Not sure what that was all about, in retrospect.

I was the first mefite to welcome clango and swoon over clango. So fuck allayouse guys. [/horn tooting]

(I said sorry there in the thread because in 2002 it was still considered bad etiquette to make off-topic comments in a post. Wild.)

At first, I didn't like DS. Then I liked it. Now I like it and am mildly freaked out to see the online-life overlap.

(I wonder what the MeFi empire's webcomic footprint is, how widely it's been shouted-out to. I think Interrobang's invoked it at least a couple of times, and I know I spent 20 minutes this morning trying to match the colors of the front page for a panel detail)

"At first, I didn't like DS. Then I liked it. Now I like it and am mildly freaked out to see the online-life overlap. "

That's part of my plan! It doesn't always make a good impression, but it's always there and you can't help but remember what it looks like.

"When can we expect a Diesel Sweeties movie?"

Nobody's ever made an offer and I'm not a big enough fan of movies and the movie-making process to shop it around!

I've got a friend I would trust to write it if someone had money to lend me.

I love pixel tattoos.

Well, we've got Rowland as well. I'd love to see Dorothy Gambrell hanging around here, but she seems to actually spend her time being productive. Craziness.

And I'm convinced that if Mssr. Jacques got an account, he and jonmc would kill each other in an indie/classicrock death match inside of a week.

The answer is clear: shitty, amateurish flash animation shorts.

It worked for PVP, after all!
posted by absalom at 8:09 AM on November 15, 2007

But DS's pixel-sprite style makes it the one webcomic that would be better with stiff, limited animation. I'd even suggest going the full Clutch Cargo/"Syncho-Vox" route (if you don't think Conan has already done it to death).

And if we're making 'dibs' on character voices, I am SO Indie Rock Pete.

I rock the Daily Diesel app on my Facebook page, that's just how devoted I am. Although Daily Diesel is probably a serious breach of bandwidth etiquette, so I will stop using it if told. That's just how manageable I am.

All hail Clango, and whatnot.

we need to have MeFi discounts for buying stuff, with all the talented folks on here! ; )

Y'know what? If you're on this thread, in North America and grab a shirt this week, drop me a line with your Mefi account and I'll refund the shipping. If you're in one of those more expensive countries, I'll ask my helper to give you a free book.

As far as animation goes- my ideal DS cartoon would be like PIXHELL!

***

heeeraldo, where do I know you from? Ars?

***

As far as DS on Facebook goes, that's a totally non-sanctioned app. I'd love to have a real one that ran off my RSS feed if there is a nerd out there who is good at such things.
