Too many categories, not enough stats August 11, 2000 2:02 AM   Subscribe

1. these forums are too small to have so many different categories, a single metatalk forum might be better

2. this should go in feature requests, but see above: I would love to see stats, on the site, on links, on users. it's one of the best things about weblogs, and if this is a community weblog, then how about tables and tables of statistics?

What kind of stats do you want to see?

I didn't add stats because I wasn't convinced any single statistic was interesting enough to showcase.

If I were to put "top 5 posters" people might be inclined to post more to "get on the board."

Statistics are dicey, depending on what you highlight, users may change their behavior as a result, and it may not be a good direction to go.

true, there is that tendency with stats-- however if it's done creatively it might be a lot of fun. Originally I was thinking more along the lines of referer stats, pageviews, etc-- all the things all of us webloggers would be looking at on our own logs.

But as far as individual stats, there must be ways to make it fun and interesting, without encouraging a popularity contest. maybe just a listing of the most commented-on posts, or perhaps top keywords from all posts, or something along those lines.
