New Favorites page! January 29, 2008 5:18 PM   Subscribe

New favorites page!

We redid the favorites page (here's mine). Here are the following improvements:

- Separated Posts from Comments on new tabs, easier to read/parse on the full page width, now shows you the poster's name, number of comments, etc

- Filter by Site lets you dive into showing just favorites from a single sub-site.

- Search oh my god did you say Search why yes I did I said Search. You can now SEARCH! your favorites by words or exact phrases and a stub of a url like searching for cnn.com should pull up favorites that contained that. You can also sort search results by relevancy or date in the upper right hand corner of results. You can also search other people's favorites from their page, but you have to be logged in to see the search options.

I know I said it over email when we beta tested this, but I want to say again that "Keyword in HTML" is total search pr0n. (example) So is context highlighting, so is the hot little switch in the "sorted by" text

Sorted by relevance Sort by date
Sort by relevance Sorted by date

*swoons*

This result looks sort of weird though -- tab says zero posts, tabbed view clearly shows one, why is that? Because it's mathowie's own post? Because it's MeTa?

A few other notes from testing

- there is a stop word list that keeps people from searching for words like "the" The list is SQL Server's default stop word list
- single letters, numbers, and most punctuation is also ignored
- searching for multiple words does not do a phrase search, even if you use quotes

I can't remember anything else we discussed that isn't obvious. Thanks pb and mathowie!

Ah ha. I think I see what's going on: it's sorting by date alright, but it's the date at which you added the favorite, not the date at which the post/comment you favorited was posted. Which is how it's always worked, we just never had the byline date for favorited items displayed previously.

In other words: working as intended.

posts aren't sorted by date

They're sorted in the order that you set them as favorites. So if you mark a post from 2002 as a favorite today, it will be at the top of your favorites, as the old page always worked.

I just got finished reading a really good book by Agatha Christie (Murder of Roger Ackroyd, to be specific) and I really enjoyed the story and I was remembering how great so many of her books are and thinking of the cool plot twists of They Came to Baghdad, Endless Night, Man in the Brown Suit, etc. And I was thinking how freaking cool Agatha Christie was.

But then I came to Metatalk and I heard that we can now search our favourites.

You guys win. You are cooler than AC.

To put this in quantifiable terms, this is a fuckton of awesome.

In deference to our metric users, that's about 1016 kilofucks.

I am quite pleased with these improvements on the favorites system, they make perusing my impeccably selected favorites a thoroughly improved experience. 2 questions:

- Can http://www.metafilter.com/favorites/ refer automatically to http://www.metafilter.com/favorites/[loggedinuserid] or perhaps to some adaptation of Popular?

and

- Wouldn't a Random button/tab on this be neat?

posted by desjardins at 11:19 AM on January 30, 2008

I would like to be able to adjust the amount of displayed comments, why is 50 a hard limit? I would like to be able to adjust the sorting order, starting from the first favorite and ending at the most recent. I would like to see these changes available while browsing comments through this interface as well. If I could see 500 comments at once it would be a lot easier for me to scroll to the bottom and read up, but I cant. If I could sort by date I could read the 50 oldest ones and hit the links for more, but I can't. At they very least could we move the Older >> and << Newer links to the TOP OF THE PAGE so you don't have to scroll to the bottom and hit them 10x over to get to the beginning of a 500 comment history?

This occurred on the "All" view and the "MetaTalk" view. Not sure about the other views, and I hadn't tried removing comments. I can still remove the favorite from the post page itself.
