MetaFilter is there. February 7, 2008 3:18 PM   Subscribe

I searched for something on google today, and the first result was from Ask MeFi.

I was curious as to slang names for a hangover. Not that I have one, but I am anticipating one tomorrow. To see AskMe come up first gave me a warm glow. Just wanted to share and say I felt a certain amount of pride. I'll get back to my beers now. Cheers!

It happens all the time. Sometimes just a day or so after the question was posted.

I plan on having a hangover saturday. I will bookmark this in preparation.

I saw an Ask MeFi question on google four minutes after it was posted last week!

This happens to me constantly. Not only that: half the time, when I go to google a difficult askme question, the first result is the question I'm trying to answer, anyway.

Google has been really aggressive about indexing syndicated sites. It's kind of neat, indeed. It's been noticed before.

And let's not forget this classic tale of rss-slurping gone wrong weird.

tellurian, your googlefu (metafu?) is comendable. I am hoisted by my own petard. but I've changed. in 03 I was single hungover and angry. now I'm married with child, tired, broke, getting drunk, but surprisingly not angry. come here and give us a hug.

At some point we'll be posting in MeTa about searches that are AskMewhacks.

My favorite thing is when I google in order to help with an AskMe, and the top result is the AskMe question itself.

But, yeah, I would have said this is a relatively weak use of Meta, except for 2 things:

1- It gave me an opportunity to talk about me.
2- Everyone needs a hug.

Also
3- Great to hear Frasermoo (he who married right after royalty and got mildly famous for it) has offspring!

Google's indexing of the site used to be atrociously bad - noticeably worse than Yahoo!'s, by far. Matt switched the site search from Google to Yahoo! for a while because Google's search was so crappy.

I didn't just dream that, did I?

why don't you just paste the google link into the askme, put on some popcorn, pull up a deckchair, and watch the universe disappear into a wormhole?

amateur.

you need to put quotation marks around the phrase.

posted by Wolfdog at 5:10 AM on February 8, 2008

In case anyone was wondering, this is why people are always trying to self-link here. MetaFilter's page rank is through the ROOF.

I kinda think a nice (but kinda mean) solution to this would be to just add rel="nofollow" to every <a> added in a comment or post.
posted by Deathalicious at 10:35 AM on February 8, 2008

what would happen if you created an askme about that same askme, and put the (not-yet-existant) link back to the question, in the question?

does that make sense?

posted by empath at 4:28 PM on February 8, 2008

Your search - "can that really be the only time someone said that in the history of the internet?" - did not match any documents.
posted by UbuRoivas at 7:18 PM on February 8, 2008

Google loves MF, especially AskMe. They are crawling the site multiple times per day. Often when I start Googling to see if I can dig up an answer to a brand-new AskMe question, I find that that AskMe question is already high in the relevant search results - even though it hasn't been answered yet.

I think the Google has a list of preferred sites; metafilter's on the list, but so is wikipedia, emedicine.com, and some other ones that come up a lot from time to time.

Yes. Yes I have. I am after all a royalist. I thought it was disgusting, the way he tried to steal the limelight from Charles and Camilla [THE FUTURE KING AND QUEEN OF AUSTRALIA].

Don't think that I wasn't aware how full the head seemed on that Carlton Draught. Did you not notice how sweetly sharp and a little bit bitter that last beer I brought you tasted?
