Who the flickr is that? March 24, 2008 11:47 AM Subscribe
search by flickr name?
Assuming they have filled in the profile-bit for flickr-ness, can one search for the corresponding mefi-profile, from a given flickr-name?

There's no functionality for this right now, no. And as much as we're trying to flesh out some of the profile goodies and find ways to map those to nice functionality on-site, there's kind of an weird implication that comes with reversing the mefi-to-external connection. Being able to use some tool to find out if Person X Is On Metafilter by an arbitrary search may not be what people thought they were getting themselves into by putting that info in their profile, especially if they've otherwise left identifying info out of their profile.

Oddly enough, my curiosity was piqued because someone tracked down my flickr name, presumably out of one of my posts (it isn't in my profile out of meh-ness towards web2.0 interconnection maintaining, not a desire for privacy), and sent me a flickr mail instead of a mefi-mail.

Is your Flickr account the same one that's being pulled into the sidebar of your website, a link to which appears in your profile? The Flickr account with all of the WOW screenshots?

My superior intellect has divined a method for figuring out a person's MetaFilter account given their Flickr account.
1) Go here.
2) Type in the name of the Flickr user.
3) Hover the user's icon
4) Click the down arrow that appears
5) Choose "Send FlickrMail"
6) Don't mention dicks or chickens
Also, here's the comment where you outed yourself.

d'ohyeah, could have been from there too.
still seemed odd to use flickr mail to contact me about a mefi post.

I don't mind being found myself (I use the same user ID everywhere), but for other people, I can easily imagine this kind of thing veering into stalker-facilitation.
There is another website, ClaimID, that exists specifically for pointing out your user IDs on other websites.

plutor, I was so expecting something more like this for my self-outing link.
On further reflection, I suspect I know exactly why someone would flickr-mail me instead of mefi-mail, namely that they think I wouldn't answer them if I knew we had 'issues' on the blue or something. Like I take online flame wars seriously =p

Incidentally, I may be mistaken, but as far as I'm aware there is no way to search user profiles at metafilter, reverse-lookup or otherwise. The site search tools only address posts, comments, and tags, and the profiles themselves are explicitly NOINDEXed, so Google and other reputable bot-owners are blind to them. Disreputable search engines may have indexed profile data, I suppose.

I vote that it remain like this.

We have a sort of test thing we never released but may have been mentioned in metatalk before. It's called the mefi social explorer and lets you see a list of every user that has put their outside service profile in their mefi profile, sorted by service.

Whoa. If we could narrow the mefi social explorer tool by contacts, I could engage in all sorts of stalky goodness. Please assist.

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't it highlight your contacts somehow on the lists it returns? Basically when we built this tool we were sort of curious who was using what social tools. It's not really a "ready for prime time feature" [though it's linked in the wiki] and not something we're likely to build out much more. If people want to keep their MeFi/Flickr handles separate, or at least as separate as requiring someone to click through from their profile, then we're okay with that. Some people have secondary Flickr accounts where their "real" photos are but also have a small subset of photos in a different Flickr account linked to their profile.
Profiles are going to continue to be NOINDEXed so that we can encourage people to 1. use them as they want without worrying about what is going to show up in Google 2. be a little more open with this community than they would be on the Internet as a whole. This is explicitly why dragging something off of someone's profile page (even something prosaic like their real name if they've listed it) into the fully-indexed part of the site is a bit of a no-no. I don't think a reverse mefi directory is in the works in any way and that's probably a good thing. People who are into the MeFi flickr connection probably have meetup photos and have joined the MeFi group.

Hey, while we're asking for social thingie ponies: I know LibraryThing is the Standard Metafilter Book Site, but how about some love for GoodReads?

mendel: there's a wiki page that's collecting requests for additional "Also On" sites. No requests for GoodReads yet, so add it!
