Please kill my thread May 12, 2008 11:39 AM   Subscribe

Hey can someone kill my thread?

Not to be a pain, but it went over like an anvil. I don't particularly want to debate methods of incarceration or whatever, and all it's going to do is engender ill will.

Tonally, it's not even vaguely appropriate for a real discussion of incarceration and public safety.

As thus, any chance to get it expunged?

Ah. good to know.

Note to JohnMC if you read this:

I was polite, civil and reasonable and you turned it into a "you need to be rehabilitated because you are retarded" personal attack.

You were way out of line, especially within the context of what I tried to keep a very civil and polite discussion.
posted by Lord_Pall at 11:45 AM on May 12, 2008

If you want jonmc to see this, it might make the most sense to drop him an email, at which point just discussing it with him over email would probably be better anyway.

Turnaround from "Hey, I can memail people!" to "Why don't I castigate someone in public rather than in memail": three lines of whitespace.

There have been heated discussions about whether or not people who have been caught with minor amounts of drugs should be arrested, let along jailed, and you're surprised that your post was creating discussion on who should be locked up? Come on.

Tonally, it's not even vaguely appropriate for a real discussion of incarceration and public safety.

There is no tone in cyberspace.

I take it you were expecting a series of "Oh, wow. *dark chuckle*" comments? Good luck with that.

Lord_Pall, in your now deleted thread, you said:

Don't think so. He just runs off from prison. And that one hostage situation.

I love this line. Seriously love it. Because, I read it as a completely earnest effort to explain why the post was not meant to be a dark look and the failings of incarceration, and instead was a sort of wry nod towards "hey, this guy keeps escaping, and they keep letting him out, weird!"

But what's great is that ending to the sentence; the sort of off-handed, 'oh yeah, there was that one thing...' is perfect.

I'm totally going to steal it.

"Yeah, I just quit my job. No big deal. Well, other than the fire... and the beheading."

Yesterday my 10 year old niece came running into the room and breathlessly asked "What has four wheels and flies?"

"A garbage truck," I said.

"Aww, you've heard it."

"What's black and white and read all over?" I asked her.

"It's either a nun in a blender or a nun with a spear through her," she replied.

I've never been so proud.

Fact: Dark Chuckle was Alice Cooper's second-best album.

Second best invisible album, maybe. First best was School's Out because it had Blue Turk on it. I played that song over and over, because I wanted to learn a bass riff that was something other than the vastly overplayed Smoke on the Water. Blue Turk was way better.

Anyway: Lord Pall, not funny. And I would love it if I posted an FPP and people discussed it - you can't control the discussion after it's posted.

JonMc: I agree.

Also: dried cranberries and sun-dried tomatoes taste weird together in salad. FYI.

Agree 100% - threads should not be deleted because they are not going the way the poster intended. If that conversation was nasty enough to offend anyone, this is the wrong place for them. By a long shot.
posted by dg at 2:45 PM on May 12, 2008

Yeah, to put this into context, we've had occasions where a poster asked us to remove a post that they thought was going badly or problematic and we've checked it out and seen everything as being pretty a-okay and talked them out of it.

In this case, it seemed like the thread was kind of going to pot, so deleting it wasn't something that needed a whole lot of second-guessing, but it is something we think about before letting the axe fall.

I don't know what to make of the fact that we use axes on threads and comments, but hammers on users.
