Fantasy football, anyone? August 9, 2008 6:53 AM   Subscribe

Anyone up for fantasy football?

I don't know if the MeFites already set up a league, but if not, I'll be happy to set one up on Yahoo! I'm in the Bunny Baseball League, and it's been fun (although I wish there was more smack talk on there).

So, anyone interested?

P.S. If there is usually a league, I want to be in it.

Fantasy football is for weenies.

I've never played fantasy football, mostly because all my friends think it's stupid. However, as I grow older and more interested in sports, my curiosity in fantasy leagues has been piqued, and I would most definitely participate in this, if it existed.

I would also crush you all.

Nice try, yhbc. Or should I say, Mr. Commissioner.

League details are as follows:

League ID: 362886
password: mathowie

There are 12 spots total, and 11 left.

Join up if you will be an active owner and want to engage in some smack talk all season long.

I totally signed up. I can see that this could quickly become addictive.

Never played, and would love to join, but I'll be unable to get online for the draft. My smack talking, though, is prime stuff.

@Ghidorah: You can still sign up. If you can't make the draft, your picks will be made automatically.

American football, or the other kind?

Not really my sport, anybody up for fantasy Vuelta?

I'm in.

So live draft on Thursday, 8 August, at 9:00pm EDT, eh?

I'm in as Favrian Slip. Ready to reclaim the glory of my '06 MetaChat league championship.

Thanks, reenum, but having my picks made automatically would take all of the fun out of the trashtalking portion of the game.

"Hah, look at that! My arbitrarily chosen team, comprised of random players Yahoo! thought I would like, is mightier than those which have been labored over and agonized about!"

While that would indeed be funny, it would just be the wrong kind of funny. Have a good time, and savor your victory, whoever wins, knowing that but for a chance flight to Hawaii, I would have destroyed you all!

No. I never get the fantasy ball thrown to me, I always have to fantasy block.

I will whoop your meta-asses! Couple spots left.

I'm in, and this year I won't make the rookie mistakes I made last year. I'll make entirely new ones.

Many a rose-lipt laden, dhammond, and many a lightfoot lad.

Now y'all step back, 'cause I'ma punch ya in the dick.

Weird. That is like my favorite poem ever. And I think nothing says "guy who will do well at Fantasy Football" like having a favorite AE Housman poem.

Anyhoo, the league is full. Any support for starting another?

I realize the league is full, but I'd hate for folks to be misinformed about how fantasy football works... FYI, Ghidorah and others, if you can't attend a live draft you can still modify the draft rankings and put players in your own order. Yahoo then chooses your players from *your* pre-draft rankings, not Yahoo's.

/actually prefers the auto-draft

Yahoo actually allows leagues of up to 20 teams, so expansion could be arranged if the commissioner, reenum, decides it is warranted. Of course, that would make the talent pool incredibly deep and the competition would be cutthroat, and I'm all for that. Perhaps this would be a good place for present and prospective team owners to discuss the option?

misskaz, thanks for the info. This technology you speak of confuses and frightens me, speaking as someone who has to either pray that the Bears are actually on TV in Japan (it happens, say, twice a season, sometimes up to a week late) or wait to, uh, acquire the game through other means. Having a dog in a fantasy game might cause me to break my weekly "until I see the game" sports moratorium.

Shockingly, things like bittorrent have dramatically increased my productivity during the football and basketball season. Not wanting to know the scores until I see the game, my web usage drops dramatically, September to May.

If there is enough interest, I can expand the league. Please MeMail me if you want in. I can then expand the league in twos. I wouldn't want to end up with an odd number.

*ding* You have (mefi) mail.
posted by oddman at 1:27 PM on August 11, 2008

I have sent MeMails to all interested parties. We have 4 additional owners. I need all of you to send me your e-mail addys so I can send the invites out.

I just MeMailed you-let me know if I can get in?

posted by Mister_A at 1:40 PM on August 12, 2008

@Mister_A: We now have 16 teams, so the cutoff has been met. If anyone flakes out, I will contact you.

If there's more interest in just playing fantasy football, my league is still looking for players. Just MefiMail me.
