Comment linkability at MeFiMu? August 21, 2008 6:18 PM   Subscribe

Pony request: Envisioning a golden, glowing future in which any number of other (that is to say, non-dick punching) songs at MeFi Music get the kind of comment action that "the most Favorited track of ALL TIME!" has gotten, I'd like to see individual comment linkability in MeFiMu threads. Like the blue and the other subsites have. Might this be possible?

And for all those of the opinion that my golden, glowing vision of the future will never come to pass, I say, go pee in yer own cornflakes! Or something like that.

You can link to individual comments in MeFiMu. See? Unless I am misunderstanding you?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 6:20 PM on August 21, 2008

Um... Jess, your link just goes to the top of the thread. Unless I'm missing something.

Right-click the timestamp that is also a link. Click "copy" then paste it wherever you please. It works the same on MeFi Music as it does everywhere else, including this very thread.

Is my computer broken?

flapjax, did you recently install some sort of browser extension that is possibly stripping the #12345 at the ends of URLs?
posted by mathowie (staff) at 6:23 PM on August 21, 2008

Nope. No such extension installed, Matt. Clicking on the timestamp at all other MeFi sites results in going to the exact link. Clicking on it in MeFiMu just takes me to the thread itself, not the individual comment. I wonder what's going on...

This is working for me, too, and always has. Something is weird with your setup, yeah. Huh.
posted by cortex (staff) at 6:33 PM on August 21, 2008

Damn. Wonder what's up? So, cortex, when you click on Jessamyn's see? link above, it goes to an individual comment?

What browser are you using? Sometimes Safari does this to me for reasons unknown.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 6:38 PM on August 21, 2008

Yeah, I'm on Safari. Gonna open up Firefox now and try that...
posted by flapjax at midnite at 6:49 PM on August 21, 2008

Yeah it works fine for me too. I'm just using IE.
posted by nola at 6:52 PM on August 21, 2008

Aww, hell, sorry to waste y'all's time. Works in Firefox.

How odd that Safari does it right for all other sites besides Music.

flapjax at midnite, not just a user name it's a damn good idea too.

I want this, too; dammit! Why should flapjax get all the good stuff?!? I want it NOW.

NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW!

I'm WAITing ...

Oh. Thanks!

Why should flapjax get all the good stuff?!

Ha! As it happens, I have a song that counters that notion! See, I've actually missed most of the good stuff. The song's pretty wordy, but, what the hell, I'll print it here...

THAT GOOD STUFF THAT I MISSED

if i'd only had my camera with me yesterday
i'm telling you what, i'd-a had a great shot
the way the light fell on your face, honey was perfect
but now a fading memory is all i've got
ten thousand things they rose and fell and rose again
all the while i was just twiddling my thumbs
and now the feast is over the guests have all gone home
i made it to the table ain't nothing left but crumbs
but i'm not looking for a reason, a reason to exist
just trying to find my way back
to that good stuff that i missed

i was having a chat with the original true earth mother
i told her i was one with the universe
she said she can't tell one from another
then she told me a joke in a language
i could only half understand
still i laughed like mad at the punchline
and she offered me her outstretched hand
so i took the hand of the sweet earth mother
which of course i kissed
cause i was trying to find my way back
to that good stuff that i missed

there's a dragonfly outside my window
caught in a spider's web
ain't got a ghost of a chance,
still he keeps on struggling
the circus tent has caught on fire
and the lion tamer's dead
but the juggler,
he keeps right on juggling
and me i'm looking for the music
that'll soothe the savage beast
i'll beat this drum all night if that's what it takes
but no sooner do you escape, escape from the lion's den
than you find yourself in a brand new nest of snakes
and i tried to tame the cobra but the cobra only hissed
n'said you better find your way on back
to that good stuff that you missed

and now it's come the flood, honey it's swept us away
you're clinging to your piece of wood, and i'm clinging to mine
at least we're going, honey we're going in the same direction
and i see you've managed to keep ahold of a bottle of wine
if we can make it to higher ground, we could pour ourselves a drop
i'll offer a toast to you and you can toast to me
and we'll keep on going like that til we have to stop
we'll proclaim ouselves triumphant as we raise a defiant fist
as if we'd found our way back
to that good stuff that we missed

I think this is the problem. A link to an individual comment on MeFi (or Ask, or MeTa) looks like this:
http://www.metafilter.com/74304/The-Peleton#2226742

A link to an individual comment on Music looks like this:
http://music.metafilter.com/mefi/2452#12273

Or, more generally:
/threadnumber/threadtitle#commentnumber
/mefi/threadnumber#commentnumber

Firefox can figure out where to go in either case, but Safari can't.

Wow, danb, nice detective work! Wonder if pb or somebody could set up the Music posts so they're in line with all others... I guess that would be my revised pony request.
posted by flapjax at midnite at 8:52 PM on August 21, 2008

Oh right. Shit I forgot Safari doesn't respect the HTTP spec and cuts off targets on redirect (and shouldn't). I'll ask pb to change up the permalinks so they are correct.

I just have to say that watching threads like this is like a tiny little detective novel with all sorts of plot twists and a happy ending. NoirFilter.

Isn't pb like, the father of the permalink? So, is this like some good old fashioned corporal punishment or more like eugenics?
