Fresh/just posted/moments ago: are these specific spans of time?

Just curious. Already asked here, but without a response.

Those aren't specific spans of time. They're assigned randomly when something is less than a minute or so old.

WHA?

I've thought about this a lot, and definitely had the time brackets for each one worked out in my head. I'm stunned.

Ever make one of those "not-so-fresh" comments?

Great question, and I'm very glad to know the answer so I don't have to waste my precious brain cells and come to fallacious conclusions like poor roll truck roll.

there is, however, a second tier of slightly longer vaguely defined periods of time that metafilter chooses randomly from.

a little bit ago
just before
no after that
just, like, a half a second ago, i swear to god

"Fresh" should never be used on my comments. Frankly, they are usually just warmed-up rehashings of what someone else has said, stale jokes that have been left out in the sun too long, or moldy old internet memes.

From a high enough point of view it's all simultaneous.

Well, it seemed like kind of a slow day, and it wasn't in the FAQ. I could call somebody out for a comment they made "a moment ago!!" and slip the question in somewhere, if that would help.

adam, I JUST read your comment, and I think you were being FRESH with me.

Uh oh! Hold on! A MOMENT AGO, a rider came to tell me I am needed in Warshington! I must sally forth to save the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Yawning! I am rolling up my sleeves! I am going to Warshington to save stuff! Wish me well, friends!
posted by Mister_A at 12:41 PM on September 25, 2008

They have actually saved it already but they are going to wait for you so they can do the photo op. The $5000 has already been spent on makeup and FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY IS YOUR WATCHWORD SIRRAH.
posted by Shepherd at 12:48 PM on September 25, 2008

As long as there is an opportunity for me to appear in front of the museum with rolled-up sleeves*, I am fine with that.

*It is I who will have rolled-up sleeves–not, as I understand it, the museum.

I propose a time increment called "should I eat this?"
posted by adamrice at 1:13 PM on September 25, 2008 [1 favorite]

1 should-I-eat-this = 2 weeks in a refrigerator or 1 day on the dashboard of a car.
posted by 517 at 1:25 PM on September 25, 2008

I think the actual increments would be more like "Fresh," "Still Edible," "Eat at Own Risk," and "Twinkies Only."

"A dime."
"I only got a nickel."

Keep commenting and posting. You might see it too.

pb, I was looking back through the less modern stuff and was expecting to find comparable catchy phrasing like ancient, antediluvian, antiquated, antique, archaic, hoary, timeworn, venerable, and old as Methuselah. Instead all we get is 2 weeks ago, 9 months ago, last year, or two years ago. Where's the love for history?

Wait, is that "less than a minute" as observed from a stationary viewpoint? Or what kind of velocity are we talking about here, because technically "less than a minute" could be any amount of time up to and including the life of the known universe if the relative velocity is high enough.

I NEED TO KNOW!!!
