Double Talk. Double Talk. October 11, 2008 1:50 PM Subscribe
This came up on shuffleplay on itunes, and I'd like to suggest it as a theme song for Metafilter. Elephant Talk!
Balderdash!
Plus, 3 geeky guys with the always cool Tony Levin, how MeFi is that?

That's the most fun I've ever seen Robert Fripp appear to have.

Robert Fripp looks like my periodontist.
Therefore I fear and mistrust him.

Yeah, no shit gleuschk. He must have had his teevee face on. The times I've seen him live he was nowhere near that animated.

Heh, fixedgear, I have guys at work convinced that the Elephant Walk is a gay orgy practice. Imagine if you will a line of naked men walking and reaching for the errr... trunk behind them... Like elephants at the circus...
I seriously have a sick imagination, but even worse, I infect unsuspecting people with it.

I saw that tour in Seattle at the Moore Egyptian. I'm trying to think of how to convey the magnitude without using expletives.
I Can't.

I don't know. I tend to favor Indiscipline as far as MetaFilter goes.
I repeat myself when under stress I repeat myself when under stress I repeat myself when under stress...
The song is based on a postcard Belew received from his wife, regarding a souvenir he'd sent her while on tour. I tend to regard many FPPs as postcards from the web. "Here's something neat I saw in my travels."
"I do remember one thing. It took hours and hours and hours. And by the time I was done with it, I was so involved. I didn't know what to think."
Many users sit on FPPs for a while, trying to decide if they're worth posting, trying to perfect the framing.
"I carried it around with me for days and days, playing little games. Like: not looking at it for a whole day. AND THEN: Looking at it, to see if I still liked it. Mmm... I DID!"
"You know, the more I look at it, the more I like it. I DO THINK IT'S GOOD... I wish you were here to see it!"
That's pretty much the thought process that goes into composing an FPP.

Did you make this up on my college campus ten years ago, because one of frats got in trouble for making their pledges do this and the school paper reported it as being called "the elephant walk."

philip-random: funny. I thinking of using that in a FPP a while back along with a couple of other things on the general topic of stop making sense. But then the world's economy collapsed and it just didn't seem so relevant any more.
I was thinking of doing an FPP centering around this video with extra info.
I still might, too, but it seems the rest of the concert appearances became un-youtubed. Ah well.
As for this being the theme song to MetaFilter? I think there should be no theme song to MetaFilter. Not even anything suggested by flapjax, though I admire him. NO THEME FR MEFATILTER KTHXBAI

not_on_display, if you're really taking me seriously, then you need some adjustment to your instrumentation. I tried to make it more obvious with balderdash, but so it goes.
Falconetti, umm, no, but that is funny. I'd never have anything to do with a frat.

When I need to make something obvious, I'll usually use pictionary, or carcassone in a pinch.

How indicative of the period. Both Fripp and Belew are rocking the Roland JC-120's. Tons of clean headroom--the distortion is outboard.

I am sad that this video has been removed. Is it elsewhere?
I was six feet from Belew at the Austin stop on the Discipline tour, and waited patiently to find out what effect he was using for the solo on that song, that's so high-pitched. He played it with a slide, up over the second and third pickups on his strat. Mind-blowing. And yeah, Tony Fucking Levin.

Hi, I just got back from my tune-up, and now I can totally see you're full of shit. It's funny how a simple oil and lube, change of filters, rotate my tires, can make me run much better.

...you need some adjustment to your instrumentation.
Well, you obviously haven't listened carefully enough, because n_o_d has always used very appropriate instrumentation.
Well, OK, I might've substituted a Sri Lankan nose flute for the French horn in one or two of his pieces, but that's just, you know, personal preference.

Well then, I suggest the MeFi Anthem must be composed as a duet for manualist and eefer.

Heh, thanks for the back handed insult, not_on_display. Obviously only a really huge asshole would think they could slip that by without notice, but then that would require some understanding of instrumentation, which you clearly don't have. So I'll just continue to think of you as a maladjusted maladroit.

It's really one of my favorite songs as well, of all the songs I've heard in my life. I was thinking of digging for Stick youtuberies for possible FPP-ing.
[after reading back what offhand stupid remarks I had written upthread...]
Oh, I made that "full of shit" comment, well, I think I was making a joke, but now, I don't get what I was trying to say. Something like double-negating the balderdash, countering with a brou-ha-ha. Like meaning, "You're actually not full of shit..."? How's that sound?
Tell you what: make it the theme song for MetaTalk instead of MeFi and and it's a deal, balderdash or no. I've never heard a more apt song; most of the conversations around the grey strike me like my brain is made of wood. Elephant talk!?
So, where do I sign? Oh, you mean I can't just make some sorta decree? declaration? These are words with a "d" this time...
