Related Project Posting Prevention? October 30, 2008 12:30 PM   Subscribe

I have a Related Project Posting Dilemma. There seems to be no place for me to inform Mefites about a piece of music that I recorded, but did not write. I can't do an FPP, as I'm quite directly related, but I can't post in MeMusic as it's not my piece.

I've been given permission by the group to let you all know about it, but I can't think of any way to do it other than with this MeTalk post, ici:
My buddies in the Seattle band "Awesome" recorded a song about a chance encounter, post-election, between John McCain and Barack Obama. It's a great tune, and very timely too. You can find it here if you are so inclined. Click on the very disturbing McCain/Obama mashup picture.
So what do I do in the future if I want to let you all know about something cool I worked on? Or is MetaFilter set up specifically to prevent this kind of posting?

Thanks all! Coming up on 4 years of membership this month.

If you were involved in creating the piece of music in some way you're welcome to post it to Music. Using Meta as a posting mechanism is not a great idea, so I removed the link from this post. Put a link in your profile and feel free to put it in Music but be clear about whose it is.

Your profile is a great place for links and self promotion.

loquacious, This is less self-promotion than a timely link to a friend's interesting offering. My profile doesn't really get the word out very effectively.

jessamyn, Metafilter Music specifically prohibits "your friends' music". Am I interpreting this incorrectly?

I'd be happy with the answer of "this isn't what MetaFilter is for", but there's a good community of people here who I believe would enjoy this.

If it's got a URL, it would qualify as for projects.metafilter.com, no?

Did you record it? Then it's partly yours. Basically we don't want people putting up "hey my friends are in a band and they did this...." stuff. MetaTalk is not for "getting the word out" in this fashion and MetaFilter is not supposed to do everything for everyone.

It's not a web project at all. It's a one-off piece of recorded music that I thought you all would like to hear. I would feel totally out of place posting it there. I won't relink to it, but if you are curious, you can search for "Awesome The Band" and find the "Listen" page.

Gotcha, jessamyn. Thanks for the response & clarification on MeMusic. I'll go there.

It might help to edit the music post page: Please do not upload your friends' music or anything you were not personally involved with creating.

FTFY not meant in a snarky way. Really. It just seemed clearest that way. I don't want to go to Bantown.

There is also similarly unclear language on the New Post page itself. I think that's what scared me off initially.

Post it all and let the banhammer sort it out.

No, don't, this is a terrible idea.

I don't think this is the right kind of thing for any part of MeFi. Perhaps drop a link in as part of a comment in one of the election threads?

Sounds like MeMusic would work very well.

...a piece of music that I recorded, but did not write.

Hey, the most listened to and favorited piece to ever appear at MeFi Music (what was that tune called? Strike Them In The Reproductive Organ? Smite Them On their Male Appendage? Well, something like that) was posted by the guy who recorded it, not who played it. So, you've got your precedent right there.

Sounds like MeMusic would work very well.

Aquaman thought so too!

Your profile is a great place for links and self promotion.

Oh come on. No, it isn't. It's the place to put links in the MetaFilter community because we have decided, for better or worse, that self-promotion of any kind on this site (with the exception of Music and Projects) is absolutely verboten. So much so that people usually feel pressured to apologize in advance when they link to their own material in a comment.

I've looked at hundreds of MeFi posts, hundreds of AskMes, a few projects, a few posts in Music. During the 3 odd years that I've been a frequent visitor of the site, I've looked at someone's profile page only a handful of times. If there were direct links for adding someone as a contact or sending them a MeMail, that number would be even lower.

There are plenty of retarded posts on all of the sites. Some of them stand, some of them get deleted. And you know what? They're just posts. A few extra KB in a database. People get so damn worked up about them, and then it makes people scared to share something because they're afraid that they'll get ripped to pieces.

This is a totally unrelated point, but I want to talk for a moment about the "dorks" of the Internet. Now, you may think all of you qualify as dorks, but the truth is that in the same way there are the popular kids who seem to do so well in school while the dorks sit around having a miserable adolescence, there are popular and unpopular entities on the Internet too. Social networking is also a popularity contest and to be honest I still haven't figured out why some "win" and some "lose". There's this prevailing attitude among some people on MeFi that "if you build it they will come" because that has magically worked for them. There's also a multiplier effect: some wacky sweater gets posted on Boing Boing because it's by a friend of a friend. Once on boing boing it goes on MetaFilter and so and so forth. It gets digged up, and the next day the person is sold out of his entire stock and can sell small models of his poo made out of felt and still get customers. Meanwhile out there is some 'net "dork" who makes really wonderful yarn creations but doesn't, for whatever reason, have the same "pull". She discovers MetaFilter, wander into an AskMe about sweaters or something and says, "Oh! I sell sweaters" and offers a link back to their site. Instantly the guns come out, people condemn her as a self-linker and call out for the banhammers. As if links just magically fall out of the sky onto the worthy.

PS: Yes, I know SEO is bad, okay? That is not what I am talking about.

Perhaps I should be clearer... if you feel the need to link to something that you think people need to see, your profile page is about the only place that is good for that on MeFi. Projects and Music are great for the specific things that belong there and linking to your own stuff in a comment once in a while is fine provided you're above board about it and don't pretend that it's not your stuff.

We spend a lot of time keeping MeFi free from SEO spammers, relentless self-promoters and asshole scammers. The dork who doesn't know that it's not okay to post a link to their own sweater store in AskMe doesn't get banned and doesn't even usually get harshed on. We'll remove a link, remove lame jerkish comments about it, and send them a NICE NOTE. However, for people who don't really know how the place works, we'd prefer they erred on the side of caution.

Aquaman has been here for four years, wasn't clear on a point of etiquette and asked about it. That's fine too.

Oh come on. No, it isn't.

Yes it is. PoliticalFilter, linked in my profile, regularly gets hits, usually after I've a post. Same thing for when personal website was linked and I always got a large number of hits after I had made a post.

During the 3 odd years that I've been a frequent visitor of the site, I've looked at someone's profile page only a handful of times

Other people are different from you.
