new tagline for Metafilter September 8, 2000 1:43 PM   Subscribe

I just thought we should have an open thread on Jason Krannke's new tagline for Metafilter: "your source for political news, stories stolen from Slashdot, weblogger gossip, and links to major news stories that everyone already knows about".
So? If MeFi can save me the trouble of visiting Slashdot, Drudge and CNN.com (plus providing comments on the various topics I can steal to sound smarter in RW conversations), I think it provides a very important service. Maybe not the service mathowie originally intended...

"Inevitable Hoopla" sounds like the name of a pro-wrestler.

I'd like someone to explain to me why I should care in the slightest what someone named Jason Krannke (whoever the heck he is) thinks about MeFi? He's entitled to his opinion and I'm entitled to ignore it, which I intend to do.

MeFi exists for one and only one reason: because Matt wants it to. It needs no other justification. It certainly doesn't need the permission or approval of Jason Krannke (whoever that is).

As far as I'm concerned, this is a non-story.

your giving kottke more credit than he merits. i don't see him shaking the world up from his little corner...

Well yeah, okay, I can kind of see Krannke's point, but ... Matt, what was your original intention for MeFi?

I like, well, a lot of what Jason claims is wrong with it, really. For example, we may all know about a news item, but where does one get to discuss it like it's discussed here?

By god, we're almost civil here. If a bit bitchy.

So a non-issue? Maybe. But perhaps it's a good idea (as it occasionally is anyways, I'd think) to re-evaluate what this place is supposed to be all about.

I'm still fairly new to the joint, but I really like it. And yeah, it's become my portal to the rest of the web.

That's all the hoopla I got in me on a Friday afternoon. Sorry.

heh. Kottke's a friend so I respect his opinions, but personally, I found it amusing. It made me laugh anyway.

In the last week, this site has been very bush/gore heavy on links and comments (much to the chagrin of non-US members), and I've noticed more slashdot links than before.

The news stuff has been fairly mainstream stuff, and not really in the "breaking news" sort of way, but more like "hey did you guys see this yesterday?"

I'm as guilty as anyone else for the state of MetaFilter this week, the things I've posted haven't been terribly interesting, and I just feel a little "off." Jason likes this site and wants it to be as great as it can be, and to me it sounds like he's saying "guys, come on, pick up the pace over there, get some good stuff again"

It's an off week here, that's all.

Personally, *I* think "Inevitable Hoopla" would be apretty cool name for a rock band. :-)

But then, I'm in such euphoria from getting my first real notebook computer in my life that I don't even care that it's a P-166. Hell, it's got 64Mb, a freshly installed 10GB Fujitsu, a *real* modem, and an 800x600, 32 bit S3 Aurora. It's *allowed* to be a little slow.

This is craziness. MeFi users talk back and forth about Jason, and even start new threads when he redesigns his page for 24 hours, but when he says one thing people don't like, he's 'Jason Kraanke'? He's entitled to his opinion and I'm glad to see Matt was able to read a little deeper into it. There's also some truth in Jason's quips. Sure, it's election time, but I think we've been getting a BIT too much Gore/Bush information as of late. As for SlashDot, it's a good site and I've linked it in the past, but it really is evolving into a forum for 14 year olds who like the sounds of words like 'unix' and 'microLAN' coming from their own mouths. Personally, I'd like to see MF become more of a thought provoking, discussion oriented community and less of a "Salon wrote this, Gore said that, look at me I posted to the main page 12 times yesterday" forum. In the end, however, I guess no one can expect 24 hours of immersive spiritual and sociological discussion. Even I'm guilty of my own sins.

I appear to be extremely dense. I thought "Jason Krannke" was genuinely the name of some person.

Hmmph..

It would have possibly meant something if Jason had made any attempt whatsoever to say what it is he does want to see here. Besides, even the posts of things seen a million other places tend to lead to interesting discussions.

Hey Matt, speaking of MeFi taglines, Kottke-based or otherwise, did you ever get 'round to implementing the random images thingy you teased us with a few months ago? Seems like the same selections, based on my recent reloads. (Obviously, this is way down on ye olde feature request list. I was just wondering.)
