Michigan Meetup? February 3, 2009 7:26 PM Subscribe
There must be a decent population of Michigander MeFites..
Is anyone willing to set up a MetaFilter gathering in lower Michigan area? I would offer to do so, but I'm tremendously bad at: organizing, scheduling, being active on the site, all of the above.
They look like quite the happening activities, and perhaps I'd get over my reluctance to post if I've met some other MeFites face to face and it was proven they wouldn't instantly tear my tiny brain to shreds.
(Chicago looks awesome, but it's a bit far for a work night)

I'm in Livonia along with my girlfriend, who is also a MeFite.
I think HuronBob is also around.
And.. and... there are others.

I'm in an eastern suburb of Lansing...but I've never quite understood the point of meetups. "I go to this same website" doesn't seem like all that big a connection. But perhaps I would only understand the point if I went to one, so perhaps I would try one if one of the lower Michigan people turns out to be the organizer type.

As a resident of a city that seems to have meetups on a monthly basis, I gotta tell you, not that girl, that meetups are wicked fun. Wicked. Fun. I missed our most recent meetup - a ski trip to Tahoe - and the photos made me jealous that I hadn't gone, although I do not ski at all (there was sledding, though, and I sled).

Ann Arbor works for me, is someone willing to be responcible for setting it up?
(I'm, uh, also bad at responsibility)
Everything I've read points to meetups being fun, and MeFites in general seem to be more intelligent, more interesting and more willing to learn than your average person. Which may be a stereotype, but it's a positive one!

You Lansing-area mefites are asking too late. Lived in E.L. for 15 years and now that I'm in Minnesota y'all wanna meet up? Meh.
If you meet in Ann Arbor somebody go buy a fragel and think of me while you enjoy the tasty, cinnamon-sugar goodness.

If I were to suggest February 28 and 5:00 PM at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, where very liberal, nearly socialist radical left wingers have been known to serve people who aren't, would there be objections to this having purely to do with the time of day or the date on which it occurs?
Early evening means folks driving in from far reaches of the state can get home again before turning into pumpkins, and the locals can continue on to their usual nightclubbing rounds if that's how they roll. Or everybody gets an extra long extended remix party time if the vibe is right. And because it means we can get one of the big round tables near the front before the joint fills up.
Any organization necessary beyond that should extend purely to deciding which pizzas are to be ordered from Aubrees for the occasion.

Whoever gets there first, stake a claim on a big round table and put up a table card or sign. Early comers get to choose pizza toppings, and we'll phone in an order to be delivered around 6.
For people not familiar with Corner Brewery, here are some directions:
- If you're coming in towards Ypsi via route 14, get off at Ford Road, turn right onto Prospect, and cruise for a couple miles until you reach suburban civilization. Staying on Prospect, after you cross Holmes Road keep your eyes open for East Forest. Turn right onto Forest. Four or five small blocks later, the old one-story industrial building on your right is the Corner Brewery.
- If you're coming in via I-94, get off at the Huron St. exit. Turn left off the ramp onto Huron, and keep on Huron until you reach Forest. Turn right onto Forest and look for the Corner Brewery on your left.
- If you're coming in by way of Michigan Ave. look for Prospect Rd., head north and turn left on Forest Ave. If you're coming in by Washtenaw Ave, you're an Ann Arbor townie and you can figure this out for yourself.
- Or ignore me and get directions from Google Maps. If you continue to be afraid of getting lost, memail me beforehand for my phone number.
posted by ardgedee at 10:11 AM on February 20, 2009
Whoops. Incomplete information could screw up some travelers. If you're taking I-94, you want Huron Street northbound. So if you're on eastbound I-94, turn left off the exit ramp. If you're on westbound I-94, turn right off the exit ramp.

This is where I start to feel all guilty as I'm the one that suggested this, but...
It appears that we're all getting some heavy snow today, and I'm coming from SW of Lansing. If the highways are crap, I'm not going to be able to make it, but I'll wait and see how the road conditions are. If they're drivable, I'm definately heading up.

I was just outside in Ann Arbor, at around 12:30 in the afternoon. The local roads are still passable.
The storm got a late start so we've received about 2-3 inches of snow since 10:00 when the storm started, but the latest weather report still expects it to taper off by 4 PM.
Take your time, take it easy, and if you're late we'll keep the light on for ya.

Blah -- I won't be able to make it anyway. So far Lansing's got 4" of snow, FYI. (measurement is estimated from how much snow's on the railing of my deck.) Maybe in another two months or something we could have another MI meetup to catch those of us who won't be there tonight?

Just went to check on the highway conditions, and as I don't think my sanity could handle 90 miles at 40mph, I'm unfortunately going to have to bail.
I'll uh, help take responsibility of planning another in a few months? Maybe towards the end of April when the snow is less likely to interfere?
Those of you there - have a great time, and feel free to brag about all the fun we're missing!
