Another thread callout.

We don't know what is going on in these people's lives, and I think the level of "DTMFB" style piling on is getting out of hand. Seems like a LOT of unkind assumptions are being made as to the motivations of the boyfriend.

It's one thing to share one's understanding of that phrase, it's a whole 'nother to decide we know what kind of person he is or what's going on in his head.

Wow, metafilter has been on their period lately...we should change the background to red.

Oh, for god's sake. "The boyfriend" didn't post the question. He didn't comment in the thread. He is not identifiable by any detail posted by the anonymous question-asker. I don't think that anonymous's probably-now-ex-boyfriend, who doesn't even know that a bunch of strangers on the internet think he's emotionally stunted, is exactly suffering any harm.

on preview: sixcolors, grow up.

sixcolors, that attitude is why rich people don't want to buy stuff from you.

What is this, lame call out day? People are just answering the question with the information provided. It seems fairly clear to me that this is douchebaggy behaviour from a man of any age, let alone a man in his late 30s who has been seeing this person for eighteen months.

Speaking of the Hovercraft Eel discussion, I feel like I'm in the opposite situation. I'm the newbie and there's a bunch of hostile oldies. People have been hostile to since I joined a year ago....waaaaaay before I started acting hostile back. You all think I'm a previous user or something, is that what it is?

This isn't really worth a callout, though a similar problem happened earlier with the thread about the poor dude who had embroiled himself with a bad-news girlfriend. When people get so vehemently negative about a total stranger whom they have only heard about from the second-hand account of someone who's also obscured behind the cloak of anonymity, they tend to sound hysterical and unreasonable. It makes it that much easier for the asker to dismiss any legitimate advice giving because of the hair-trigger DTMFA sensibilities. In regards to the moving-in thread, I bet that guy read about five comments that characterized his girlfriend as a villainous mountebank and then deleted his account forever.

> You all think I'm a previous user or something, is that what it is?

No. In fact, it just appears that while you have been here for a year, you have little if any regard to understand the community in which you are participating. Instead of listening to people's suggestions, you've decided we are all here for your amusement.

Cortex gave a pretty clear description here.

I'll just be straight up with you, sixcolors: mission accomplished. You are one of the most interesting and funny posters on MeFi, because you walk this impossible line between childish earnestness and hideous narcissism, and like, every comment and post from you is a weird gift.

If you detect hostility, it's because you have no off switch, no propriety, seemingly no inner critic or judge or superego. And after a while that gets tiring - but for me, now, it's like a joke that's gone on so long and relentlessly that I start laughing again in spite of all my efforts not to - I mean, the "powder" thread? The graphic design thread? The "how can I get $1200 right now" thread? You're a catchphrase engine, and god bless you for you.

<3, your biggest fan, no joke.

Oh my. I guess I'll get in before this gets closed.

sixcolors: I'm not an oldie, I'm registered about the same time you did. You're the only user in the past year that I've consciously noticed as an agitator and an avowed attention seeker. You believe that the site is your own to ask ridiculous questions like why old people won't buy oatmeal cookies from the back of a station wagon. I haven't begun to fathom whether you are just obsessed with e-drama or you're a troll. On behalf of MetaFilter, users new and old, I ask that you take a break from the site. Get that bunny you always wanted and spray-paint it whichever color matches your decor. Cheers.
