Having our cake and eating it June 6, 2009 4:07 PM Subscribe
At today's Manchester (UK) meetup, SlyRabbit excelled herself and brought along a special Metafilter cake. Feast your eyes on this blue and green wonder. That is all.
Definitely flagged as delicious.

That's very cool! Speaking from personal experience working with blue food coloring in baked goods, you'll all have blue poop tomorrow, so don't freak out.

Damn it, amyms, you just prevented what could have been the most awesome chain of poop-related AskMe questions ever!
(The cake looks great!)

I once had a loaf of bread turn that colour. It, by contrast, did not look delicious.

Is that water? I'd like some coffee/milk with my Metafilter cake please.

Cool! I love to bake, and after someone suggested MeFi cupcakes in one of the tenth anniversary meetup threads, I started toying with the idea of bringing some kind of MeFi-themed baked goods to the Portland meetup.
Any chance of getting the recipe?

Tangentially, to follow up on the very agreeable afternoon: Henderson's Relish is a drinkably awesome vegan liquid HP sauce, MetaFilter is not the same as Metacafe for some real-ale vegans and vegetarians at the pub, and Travel & Leisure is possibly featuring an article mistakenly conflating MeFi cake with the Marble Arch pub courtesy of a John Travolta-alike writer from NY, and MeFi cake's colour scheme is officially both 'disgusting' and 'delicious', according to staff members at the pub.

velvet winter, I based it off this buttercake recipe, and learned a few things about baking in general.
(might be obvious to many but I didn't know you can't substitute baking soda with baking powder)
I added the food coloring in the last stages, but the longer you mix, the denser the cake becomes. This recipe is for a flatter, but moister cake anyway, but next time I think I will try to get the right dosage of coloring before hand. Also, bare in mind that if make the yellow cake version and use only egg yolks, the batter will be yellow, and yellow + blue = green.
I'm glad everyone enjoyed it, I almost gave up, especially after the 3rd batch. But I think smothering anything in chocolate works all kinds of wonders.

Thanks slyrabbit!
My baking skills are a little rusty, so I'm thinking I will go with something simpler - cupcakes or frosted sugar cookies, perhaps - if I decide to bake before the meetup. That cake sure looks like it would be fun to bake, though. Maybe I'll try it out beforehand and see if I can get it to pass muster with my more finicky friends.

Once everyone started jumping on the cupcake bandwagon for the 10th anniversary meetups I started thinking about making little edible plates of beans with iced cookies and jelly beans. I know that by posting this idea I am inviting people to steal it shamelessly but I figure:
A) If there's anyone in Columbus who's still debating going to the meet-up at Surly Girl, surely the promise of cookies shall convince them!
B) Now I will have time-stamped proof that I came up with the idea first. Unless someone's already done it. Hmm.
