Play me off June 30, 2009 9:43 AM   Subscribe

Did I hallucinate a Metafilter comment? I remember reading the line "Play him hither, Lute Cat" on Metafilter recently and though it was so hilarious I needed to illustrate it. I wanted to give credit to the original commenter, but I can't for the life of me find the comment. All my styles of google-fu have failed me. Did this comment actually exist?

Man, that's my comment and I don't know where it is either. My immediate guess is that this all took place on Metachat. Looking it up now!

Item: "Hence is not hither."

I came in here to complain about "hither", too. It reverses the whole meaning of the phrase.

Yeah, but is there an actual real-life lute cat? Because if there isn't verily shall I weep.

Yeah, I saw that deletion reason too and was really sorry I couldn't favorite it. I also briefly fantasized (with both hands above the equator) about making such a video. The problem is how to get curly-toed boots onto a cat...

You'd have to declaw it first. I can't wait for the AskMe.

Maybe there could be a "Play him hither, Zither Cat" illustration.

Seriously speaking, this kinda comes up a lot. Like how much *work* it is just to make one stupid joke ...and the joke is usually so short or so stupid that you don't think it's going to take any time at all but it does cause it always does then you're halfway into it going "Why am I stressing out over a joke about a cat with a lute?" Like how that 26 Scarlet Letter thing turned into like 10 months of procrastination and re-drawing for something that'll take all of 50 seconds to read. Like taking hours and hours and hours of footage to make a 30-second boob joke.

What I'm saying is, you really have to have faith and confidence in your stupid jokes if you're ever going to make them into reality.

or, summed up

"It took an hour to write! I thought it should take an hour to read!"

Pithy deletion reasons are seen by so few people that I look on them as free for the taking and making of my own jokes. [presses kill switch]

I, too, watched Futurama last night.

I'm glad we're including all the deletion reasons from all the mods, because I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but it seems like vacapinta is really starting to get comfortable in his role as graveyard-shift mod.

I love your illustration, too.

They're both great, TW, but Lute Cat better captures the very unhappy, I'm-so-going-to-savage-you-as-soon-as-you-let-me-go look on Keyboard Cat's face in the video.

DU : I also briefly fantasized (with both hands above the equator) about making such a video. The problem is how to get curly-toed boots onto a cat...

I could do this video, but I think it would be pretty boring to watch:

Me (shouting at a cat sitting on the floor): Take the god damned lute!

Kitty: Meow?

Me (shaking the lute at the cat): Take it you stupid cat! And put on these fucking boots!

Kitty: Meow.

Me (vein standing out in forehead): Take the lute you little furry bastard! You are going to make make me a fortune!

Kitty (walks away)

Me: You will never work again in this town, cat!

I have a very hard time pronouncing both zither and thither. It makes my tongue strike the back of my teeth in the same way that a petulant child might strike out at his father when angered.

Well, there is this but it only shows one page and I can't figure out why it does that. This works better but isn't exact.

Please, no keytar cat. That guy from The Darkness dressed as a pirate, playing the keytar ruined whatever respect I had for the instrument. He apparently rode a giant pair of breasts (mostly SFW, as it's a fan-shot video and none too clear) while playing a keytar.

To be clear, the very act of putting keys on something that could be slung around one's neck in a lame keyboard equivalent of the electric guitar deserves contempt.

I like Zither Cat just because of the "thither/zither" thing.
posted by Sidhedevil at 3:09 PM on June 30, 2009

What does the left hand do on a keytar anyway? Seems really limiting to only play keys with one hand.
posted by rottytooth at 3:12 PM on June 30, 2009

You work the buttons that control the pitch and such things with the other hand.

But you can play a keytar with both hands if you really want to. Probably less stable, though.

Very late to this, but it's been bugging me for days - what the hell is that thing in Potomac Avenue's Bayeux-shop image? My gf & I guessed a lion, embroidered by somebody who'd only read descriptions of sea-lions.

And in my googling around, I found this.

I guess that proves once and for all that, whenever you think the internet has produced something highly original and esoteric, some crazy cat-fancier got there first...
