Remember this note trying to identify a plant?
Baby has grown up to be a Symphyotrichum puniceum or purple-stemmed aster. It doesn't have flowers yet, but the growth pattern of the mature plant screams "aster".

Cool that an answer has been found, but that wasn't exactly an epic askme mystery and the question thread is still very much open, so this is probably pushing past the reasonable utility of metatalk followops.
