OMG WILL CORTEX BE THERE???!!!???

i will.

I am stoked. A lot of new or not-in-a-while folks showed at the tenth party, which is awesome, but dersins actually attending is also pretty exciting.

I will be there in spirit! Please roast a marshmallow for me.

Just thinking out loud here: If we have roasted marshmallows, we have a source of heat. Which means, we have a means to melt chocolate. Marshmallows + melted chocolate ..... see where I'm going with this?

So, we need to figure out what kind of recipient/container we can use to melt the chocolate over the fire. Any ideas?
posted by spherical_perceptions at 1:23 PM on August 21, 2009

Actually, I just remembered the place we're going to also serves food outside so they might not be cool about the chocolate. So I'll drop the idea.

It's also (and I hate to be voicing this concern this late in the game, but I think we should grabble psychically with it up front) possible that they just won't like the idea of us toasting marshmallows at all. So, I guess, be prepared to be politely and cheerfully shut down on that front.

Yeah, to be frank they may not be so cool with the marshmallows. Outside food = code violation, plus roasting marshmallows = potential for big fat fucking mess in their nice firepits. Were it my establishment, it's not a precedent I would want to set.

Heh. First coke's on me.

Grabble? Really, fingers?

OED reports that it's even correct, too, if I'm willing to pretend we're somewhere in the 17th to 19th centuries. Neat.

dersins' nth beer's on me.

So much for my plan of drinking n-1 beers.

I will be there. As will bunnycakes. Since we missed the last two pdx meetups like total lamers.

The staff didn't seem to have a problem with the marshmallow idea last time, but that might have been a "humouring the drunken fools" polite kind of thing.

I'm bringing some anyway.

Dang, I have to miss another meetup.
Hey -- Portland comedy fans -- don't miss Arj Barker at the Baghdad tonight (Friday). He's very smart, original, funny, unpretentious - best unknown comic around, in my humble opinion. I don't know how to explain it, but he creates an atmosphere of funny around him even when he doesn't say anything.

Dude doesn't even play in the US that much (he's often in England or Australia). On Comedy Central if you want to check him out. I'm going to miss his show, too.

You know, I have a pretty decent backyard with a...fire pit...and fire pits are notoriously good for making some sort of delicious treat...what was it called again??

Just sayin'. For the future, or whatever. Mefites always welcome.

No outside food? So does that mean no doughnuts this time?

and turbodog I'll be bringing your bike team jersey that features MetaFilter on it

Are The People okay with a longtime lurker, just-joined-today societal tumor showing at the meetup? (Additional question that may negate the first: is the Respected Establishment 21+?)
posted by opossumnus at 5:30 PM on August 21, 2009

opossumnus: yeah, it seems that posting activity doesn't really matter much in terms of meetups, or welcomeness at same. As a data point, I don't talk very much on the site, and I had an great time at the tenth anniversary meetup; everyone was super awesome.

Also, check out these two threads [1, 2], which answer your question better than I ever could.

Also also, East Burn is a bar, but, IIRC, minors (if there were any) were okay at mefi10 until 9:00. I imagine dersins or somebody would know more about that though.

an great time

The time I had was so great, in fact, it came with an invisible initial vowel.

posted by maqsarian at 5:57 PM on August 21, 2009

ja, maqsarian, in my experience most bar-type establishments are cool with minors until 10--& I've been in bars after-hours with no trouble as long as I didn't try to order alcohol--but double-checking is always grand.

I will henceforth expect super-awesomeness!

I just called the bar. Minors are okay until 9:00.

Really wanted to make it, was looking forward to this for weeks. Then this week I came down with the plague and couldn't beat it in time.

But have fun everybody!
