DC Mefites play mini golf! November 9, 2009 3:38 PM   Subscribe

After the EPIC MEETUP FAIL that was this weekend's DC meetup, there seems to be interest in trying again next month.

Saturday December 5, 6pm at H Street Country Club. Can I get a hell yeah?

(Baltimore mefites: I have a Jeep and can fit 4 people other than myself if anyone needs to carpool. Just shoot me a MeMail.)

If the last attempt was a failure, I think it might worth figuring out why before we make the same plan again. For my part (and the part of my wife and our roommate) we didn't go to the last one because, as fun as that place looks, it's not really Metro accessible. If we have it there again, I have trouble imagining that three of us would go. Maybe there are other reasons why more people didn't come, but if enough people are in our boat, I think it's worth rethinking the venue. It might also be worth thinking about having some sort of second event later at a place that's closer to a Metro station

Obviously, if that's where most people want to go, ya'll should ignore me, go there and have a good time.

re: Metro accessibility. From the venue website: "The H Street Shuttle runs every evening between Chinatown and the Minnesota Ave Metro Stations from 5:00 PM until Metro closes."

If we're going to be doing it on Saturday evening anyway, would anyone be interested in having it vaguely near the National Geographic Museum (Farragut North metro station)? The Terracotta Warriors exhibit will be open by then, which might make a neat pre-game activity for museum buffs.

I'm pretty much always going to vote for H Street, but, hey, I live nearby. Not sure about the 5th, since on the 4th, I'm going to be at Iota in Arlington, seeing the very awesome Richard Buckner. If you want, you can meet me there.

I'm pretty unlikely to ever go to an H street meetup because it's kind of a pain in the ass to get to from NoVa. Would much prefer something in NW.

(but don't change plans on my account, cause i'm 50/50 for showing up to meetups i plan on going to anyway)

I didn't go because I pulled an all-nighter from Wednesday night to Friday night (and again Sunday night). I was close to hallucinating, I think.

Oh, anybody know an honest place around DC where I can get brake work done on a BMW?
posted by orthogonality at 8:48 PM on November 9, 2009

FWIW, H Street is good for me because there's parking. As much as I love NW, parking is a pain. Especially on the weekends.
posted by youcancallmeal at 8:56 PM on November 9, 2009

gsteff, I'd definitely consider going to see the Terracotta Warriors, that sounds awesome. Could we maybe consider doing that as the first part of a meet-up and then seeing who would want to head out for libations afterwards? I don't really know what's in that area but Farragut North is definitely way better for us vis a vis transportation.

(Disclaimer: I am married to Bulgaroktonos so this is not actually a second vote. gsteff, if no one else wants to go the Terracotta Warriors let us know and maybe Bulgaroktonos and I could meet up with you and I bet Copronymus would come as well.)

I'm confused, empath, the red line is the red line, whether it's headed to Union Station or Dupont, so what's the difference?

I would like to suggest November 21. I am leaving town (forever?) on the 23rd so it could be a hello-goodbye meet-up. Thoughts?

Red line + shuttle service != Red line.
posted by inigo2 at 7:03 AM on November 10, 2009

H street is no farther from the metro than say Adams-Morgan. I agree it's not the same as being right on top of the metro, but Red line + shuttle service hardly equates "pain in the ass" and it certainly is no different than the same set up in a differnt part of town. In fact I would argue that the dedicated shuttles make it even more convenient than the long, drunken stagger across the Ellington bridge that doesn't seem to have been a major barrier to meet-ups in the past.

When plotting out where the most convenient place to have a meet-up in a region shaped roughly like a wagon wheel, isn't it best to have the even as close to the hub rather than way out at the end of a spoke? A meet-up in a place like, say, Balston is only convenient to people in Northern Virginia. A central meetup is more likely to draw folks from NoVA, Montgomery County, PG County, and DC and could even draw people from Baltimore and Annapolis if done right.

But, I have no dog in this fight anyway. I have a newborn at home.

I would be up for this. Can't make it on the 5th, unfortunately.

As I am no longer Belgium, I am potentially up for 11/21 or 12/5.

After the events that led to my bold and unfounded claim of national sovereignty, I have little desire to drink beer that has ever been anywhere besides Belgium. So I don't mind driving wherever, and I can probably give people a ride back to Metro if we end up somewhere that requires such.

I could maybe muster a meetup on the December 5th and like MrMoonPie I'd prefer H St. for personal convenience. November 21 is no good for me.

Regarding the Terra Cotta Warriors, be aware that reservations are required. There is a discount for groups of ten or more if anyone wants to try to muster sufficient posse.

I'd like to go, but Red Line + shuttle is a giant pain. Parking is nice but not for an event where cocktails are served.

Parking is necessary for those of us coming from Baltimore, cocktails or otherwise.

Why don't we do the 5th on H Street and the 21st somewhere else closer to Metro? (if anyone suggests adams morgan, however, i'll kick them in the shins. i'm with pollomacho... h street stuff is not *that* far. i've walked it before.)

Regarding the 5th, that will also be the date of the DARPA network challenge, which I know that empath and I are planning to participate in. I'm not sure offhand whether the times would conflict or not (bad internet access currently).

I have Rob Zombie tickets for the 5th (DON'T YOU JUDGE ME) but might be able to convince Mr. Arkham that we should stop by a meetup on the way. I'm 50/50 on the 21st.
posted by JoanArkham at 8:37 AM on November 10, 2009

The DARPA balloons are supposed to be down by 4:00 that day. I imagine there could still be furious data crunching going on at meetup time, OR WE COULD BE CELEBRATING GLORIOUS VICTORY!!!
posted by exogenous at 8:42 AM on November 10, 2009

I was also planning on doing the DARPA thing, but had forgotten that this was the same day. DARPA + drinks = awesome.

What if we went to Brickskeller (with a great Belgian selection) on the 21st?

The 5th is my +1's birthday weekend, but that could be fun. It would give us some time away from the lil ones to spend with big people.

And I promise I wont get lost this time…well maybe

I clearly do not party as much as you peeps.

Considering that the 21st is our last chance to get parmanparman drunk enough to streak C St bid parmanparman a fond farewell, let's give that planning priority.

I propose:

6pm-ish, Saturday 21 November
The Brickskeller - Downstairs
1523 22nd St NW
Washington, DC 20037

Can someone call and make sure they can accommodate an influx of 15-20 people?

Have you guys considered Churchkey? It is the new place between Dupont and Logan Circles and has something like 35-45 beers on tap... plus multiple cask ales and a few hundred different bottles.

The best part? It's all in stock.

Also, I'm in as a "maybe" for either date.
posted by Loto at 6:00 AM on November 11, 2009

I might be able to drag myself to the Brickskeller, though it's kinda dank.

JoanArkham, if you think you might pre-cocktail for Rob Zombie at Duffy's, the Irish bar across the street from the 9:30 club, let me know - I live right next door, and might be there anyway. Man, having an Irish bar next door is hazardous!

OK, I'm entirely hijacking the Nov 21st planning! (youcancallmeal, Dec 5th is still your baby)

6pm, Saturday 21 November

Down in the Back Room
The Brickskeller
1523 22nd St NW
Washington, DC 20037

- Reservation under our 'company' name, Metafilter
- Bring ID

posted by zennie at 12:51 PM on November 11, 2009

Oh, Loto, that place does look good, but apparently they need more warning to book more than 4 people on the 21st.

But bah, certainty, safety, who needs it? Come beer-gamble with us at Brickskeller.

Yeah I probably won't be there. I've finally admitted that until about January when I can unfuck my circadian rhythm and keep it that way, I'll not be good for much except sitting soberly and quietly, feeling shitty. Or worse: drunk, garrulous, yet still shitty. Either way, if I do it in the privacy of my own home I don't have to wear pants.

fucking hell I can't wait to be diurnal again
