Every net-celebrity person I've ever emailed with ( eg: on a mailing list ) is on there. PB is on my contact list, for instance. If you use mostly gmail, I think you'll have more folks. But if you don't use gmail, you won't.

I tried this thing like a week ago, and after a minute or five, felt as if I'd been an unwilling be-roofied centerpiece in some kind of javascripty bukkake party: disgusted, bewildered, ashamed, and drenched in digital Goo straight from the Google data spigots.

I've officially crossed that watershed into being an internet old guy now, I think. I try to keep up with what teh kidz are into these days, but much of it I find exhausting and somehow antithetical to my concept of the way the world should work.

That's all I have to say about that -- carry on!

I think it would be really useful if you're involved in a complex project with lots of participants. Right now it usually goes like this:

Me: Hey that's a great idea, let's get that change approved. (Attaches DWG and PDF)
Client: Okay sounds great but I need Head Lawyer in my Region approval (adds to e-mail) and VP of Operations (adds to e-mail). Also I made some changes to the PDF and those markups are in red.
VP of Operations: Out of office reply.
Head Lawyer: I made changes to geoff.'s PDF I marked it up in blue and I attached it. head lawyer completely ignores client changes
VP of Operations: Out of office reply.
Client: Hey you missed my changes.
Head Lawyer: Oh right, let me make changes and send yet another PDF.
VP of Operations: Out of office reply.
Client: Okay take this and send bill our AP department.
Me: Here are the changes and sign off, let me know if you need any help.;
AP of Client: We are Client USA, Inc. ... the forms you were given are Client, Inc. I can't enter this into SAP until I have a purchase order number from Client USA, Inc.
Head lawyer: Oh okay, I can do that (attaches completely wrong version of the PDF).

Wave in theory, I believe, should cut through a lot of this. I have a feeling that non-tech users will always pick the easiest route and not think things through, so you'll probably have a lot of people stumbling and using Wave like e-mail eventually. If it is really a great productivity tool and people who know how to use it gain from it, you'll see it adopted in organizations by those people and forced upon the rest -- eventually the rest should catch up in theory.

geoff.: I've started a couple of waves, and corresponded with friends, but I haven't used it very extensively. Hell, today was the first time I'd logged in in almost 2 weeks.

It's like IM on crack. I don't see it as having a lot of personal utility, but it could be awesome for businesses.

Hmmph. I remember evangelizing Groove, back in beta, when it was Ray Ozzie's baby before he and it got sucked into the Microsoft monolith, in 1999, I think. It did exactly the sorts of things I think geoff is talking about, and I understood the UI. Of course, that went nowhere, too, as far as I've been able to tell.

I think my problem with seeing utility here might just be Google's tendency to obfuscate great ideas with poor user interfaces.

When I was a kid, I went crazy one Christmas with desire for a Meccano set. Cranes! Contraptions! Rube-Goldbergian-cat-pestering devices! And my long-suffering parents, perhaps still laboring under the sad delusion that their boy was gonna grow up and be an engineer, they bought me one.

My elation turned to bafflement, then indignation, then despair when I opened the box and beheld that tangle of... STUFF. Whatever mechanical curiosity I thought I had wafted away in a puff of confusion.

I just felt that same cascade of emotions upon signing in to Google Wave for the first time.

I think the thing I like most about Wave is that the name is taken directly from Firefly and if it ever crashes the error it produces is "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

I haven't used it much, but I dig the fact that when it first opened, two of the five or so contacts that auto-populated were mods here. I guess my gmail contacts just don't have that many other tech savvy people or something.

The thing that bothers me most about Wave is that Google is basically remaking email in its own image and yet it appears to be wasting a golden opportunity to build a system that is fundamentally spam-resistant.

I've been dicking around with this Wave for 'bout a week now. Considering that I don't actually do anything productive with the internets, this is basically nothing more than a way to chat with multiple friends in real time. Fun, I suppose, but I could see its utility for people who are actually trying to get something done. I do think the interface is ugly and confusing, but I don't use Google for email or whatnot, so maybe that's just how they roll. I don't know why I'm telling y'all any of this. Sadly, I have no invites to offer. Audi.

It definitely needs work, but it seems like it would be useful in a professional setting where there are projects and things. So far, I've only had one wave going, which started out with my friend asking what we do now, which devolved into a string of Sprockets jokes. I have no invites to offer either. Mazda.

Well. Turns out I have 16 too now. But this thread already seems quite saturated with them.

Thanks Ritchie ... I just remembered to come back and favorite my comment.

It looks promising. I remember first using my gmail and thinking 'whats so special?' but over time the advantages became clear to me.

So ... perhaps a stupid question, but it can be used as a regular email address, yes? Or is it just meant to be used between wave accounts?

They only give them out sporadically after you've been using it for a while. I got 8 after a week or so.
