Winter MeFiSwap! December 2, 2009 9:23 PM   Subscribe

You listen to good music. You pick some of it out, and you put it in a certain order, and you listen to your mix all the time. It's good! It sounds good, too good to keep to yourself. So you burn 5 copies of your mix to CD and you put 'em in the mail. Soon 5 different discs containing 5 different mixes from 5 other people appear in your mailbox, and this is good because you're tired of listening to the mix you made and some new tunes from cool MeFites is just the right thing.
MeFi Swap Winter 2009 is open for sign-ups.

To sign up, send me an email containing your MeFi username and your mailing address. tediseasy [at] gmail [doot] com.

I think these work best if some guidelines are set out right at the beginning:
  • We usually swap music CD-Rs. If you want to swap data discs or tapes or something and enough are interested, I can set up a side-swap.
  • If you signed up to participate last time but didn't mail out your mix, you are not invited to swap again. Maximum pukka is attained through 100% participation. If you sign up to participate this time, do so with the full intention of mailing out at least 5 mix CDs. You may be asked to mail overseas (and if you live outside the USA, you will most definitely be asked to mail packages to foreign countries). Communication is important so if you can't get your mixes out by the deadline (see below), let me or the other members of your swapset know.
  • Deadlines, here's some schedule:Sign-ups close Sunday, December 20th, 2009.Swapset assignments will go out shortly thereafter. The mailing deadline is pretty far off, considering the holiday season and general craziness: Saturday, January 23rd, 2010
  • If you would like to be in two swapsets (mailing 10 copies of your mix out) or if you have any other specific requests or restraints, please include them in your sign-up email.

Question: When you say most send CD-Rs, not data discs, I assume you mean burning the music so that it's converted from mp3 into whatever "regular" player format? i.e. the CD will only hold about 15 songs as opposed to, well, much more than that?

It's not that I can usually hear the difference, but I have all these damn cds so I might as well get something out of it.

A multi session cd of uncompressed CD audio and MP3s will still play in standard CD players if the MP3s are in the second session. We could give up one song to remove the horror of CD to MP3 to CD to MP3.

Personally I'd say go for it. A thoughtful mix of thematically consistent stuff I'm familiar with would be just as welcome as the (also awesome) Jazz/Blues/World Music and Quirky Instrumentals mixes i got last time.

What Greg Nog said. It doesn't have to be "Hey, look at all this odd stuff I know" - the best mix tapes are about building and tearing down a mood. If "Let It Be" or "Single Ladies" works in the middle of your thing, put it there. Recontextualize. I have had "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" KICK MY ASS in the middle of a mix. Seriously.

In any event, I was not make to feel bad for it. (past swapgroup members, please let me keep living the lie that you didn't)

and
Any restrictions on country? I'm in Canada..

Non-USA contributors are part of what makes this so awesome. FYI, if you do not live in the United States, you will likely be sending all of your copies to people there. I usually try to spread non-USA addresses evenly amongst all swapsets.

Is there a rule for or against DJ-type mixes?

Nope, although engineering some logical track breaks wouldn't be a bad idea—one long track can be frustrating to piece apart.

how are you going to police [people who didn't send out last time] ?

Well, I've kept the swapset groups (minus addresses) from the last two swaps I've run, so if you didn't receive a mix from someone last time you can just let me know (email!) and I'll make a note of it.

Can we make a requirement that there is also an included list of all the songs?

No, don't be silly. Use your google or your email (you'll have emails for all members of your swapset) if your posited eventuality acutalizes.

Wow, ok, my inbox is intimidatingly full right now. Already an excellent turnout! As soon as you receive your confirmation email ("Yo! You're signed up to swap!") you can be sure you're in. I'll work on responding to all of you throughout the day, so if you don't get an immediate response please don't despair. If you didn't send your mailing address and/or username in the sign-up email, please re-send with that information included.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been any data-wonkery on return rates of mixset joiners (and Secret quonsor, for that matter). Given the broad range of returns, from receiving 1 CD to all 5, I'm wondering what the average is.

I'm one of those jackasses who didn't send out their mix, but I received most of the mixes destined for my doorstep (and ears). I have packages and mixes at the ready, and they'll be sorted this weekend. Really, truly, honestly. If people receive their packages before the 20th, then I'll ask for forgiveness, and if I can join this swapset. I've been thinking of mixes for a while.

Question: this isn't the Best of new (2009) music edition, is it? It's just a normal swap-set, right?

You know... just wondering... seeing as how I've put nearly a month into making these mixes and would love to share them with the MeFi community without having to do all the physical media thing (since the Dreaded Day is swift upon us and people might want the music sooner rather than later, etc)

Postage from NZ really isn't that bad. You can either go supercheap and buy one of those specially coated sleeves for a naked disk (although actually the sleeves probably aren't that cheap), use a slimline CDR style cover and throw them in a thick envelope, or do the expensive option and buy a special sized CD box from a PostShop for fullsizes CD cases. I usually use the middle option and it costs something like $2.50 postage per disk. You want to keep it under 10 mm so it goes as a letter otherwise the price more than doubles.

Getting mail that is not bills or coupons is a thrill. Putting together something neat and thoughtful and physical for someone else is also a thrill. Downloading yet another .zip from yet another website/filesharing network—even with hi-res scans of awesomely unique cut-up magazine collage cover art—not a thrill. Snailmail mix swapping is mom's care package to filesharing's Blue Mountain animated e-greeting.

Anyway, many participants have taken to posting links to mixes in the HEY YOU MAIL YOUR MIX NOW thread. Which is cool for those with flaky swapsets, and everyone.

Oooh. Music swap - I'm in for that.

I kind of miss making new mix tapes each time I bought a new $500-$1000 beater. Determining how much more or less than *exactly* 45 minutes of recordable surface I had available on each side of the C90, assembling a playlist that seemed thematically appropriate to the type and condition of the car, the paint colour, the season, trying to match tempos from track to track, going for equidistant blank space between tracks... and then realising, once I'd made the tape and played it through once more just to make sure that it had all recorded correctly with no weird distortion problems or anything, that I'd just spent an entire afternoon listening to the damned same songs over and over and over again and that the tape would have to be put aside for a week or two before I could listen to any of it again or else I'd just be heartily sick of the whole thing...

Good times... good times.

I'm in if in is still possible! I really enjoyed making my last MeFi Mix Exchange disc (Welcome to Dangerbird), and have some ideas for this new'un.

empath: Done the traditional way, only 5 people are going to listen to your mix cd. If everyone just uploaded their mix to soundcloud (we can even make a mix swap group), everyone can listen to all of them.

Also I think that if everyone in this thread posted a mix then maybe three of them would get listened to by everyone (as soon as anyone said 'Hey empath's is awesome!') and the rest would get listened to by two or zero people.

RE: themes. I used to always make mixtapes with side-specific themes. Like one side "good" and one "evil" or male/female.

I kind of miss those tapes. /oldperson

Just to clarify -- I'm in Paris, but I can sign up, no? What is the protocol for non-US people?

You are encouraged to murmur in French and send me something from your favorite pâtissier?

Finally caught up on sign-ups. If you think you signed up, but you didn't get a confirmation email from me that started with "Yo! You're signed up to swap!" then something went haywire and you should send me another email. We're well over 100 participants this time, sweet.

carsonb-- I already emailed you about signing up, but have now decided (after perusing some delicious music last night) that I'd like to be in two groups. Is saying so here sufficient or would you prefer another email?

You just inspired my swap-mix theme: A side = structuralism / B side = post-structuralism.

Just kidding, they're going to be good. Off to start working on some rough track lists ... eager to hear what my five cohorts come up with.

I prefer the girl bands, for the most part. Do you have any new recommendations on that front?

> I prefer the girl bands, for the most part. Do you have any new recommendations on that front?

It was the summer of girl groups, but it seems to be all boy bands since the fall. Anyway, I kind of like Brown Eyed Girls' new single, "Sign", and the revamped After School's "Because of You" is growing on me. Not feeling any love for f(x), though. Kara isn't new, but you might like them if you like the girl groups that go for cuteness - the ajussi's certainly went crazy for "Mister".

I'm currently strangely fascinated by MBLAQ, Rain's first foray into producing. I mean, what is it that Joon is wearing? Is that a lampshade? And what's with G.O.'s facial hair? And Thunder's outfit ...
posted by needled at 7:34 AM on December 5, 2009

My new favorite girl band is The Blow, especially Come on Petunia. Because of it, I'm considering "radical remixes" as my mix's theme.

Side question, does anyone know of any good Indesign templates for printing ON the CD and making a simple 4pg CD case. Yeah, I know this isn't mandatory, but I wants to be fancy, see?

Count me in. I missed the last one, and this thread is already off the first MeTa page--Maybe it deserves a sidebar?
posted by Bigfoot Mandala at 12:47 PM on December 6, 2009

Well, Bigfoot, a sidebar would be nice I suppose. But I'm just one guy here, and there's already over 125 folks signed up to swap. Certainly the biggest group I've organized so far. There are always some who miss it, no matter how many eyeballs are exposed...that's why we keep swapping! Twice a year! Wevs, if you can convince a mod to do it, I'm not against a sidebar mention.

Anyway, email sign-ups are caught up. If you sent me an email asking to be in and haven't heard back, please please send again and I'll get back to you before tomorrow.

subverting the music companies

Actually, the summer 2009 swap, the first I participated in, resulted in me purchasing two CDs I never would have even heard of without the swap.

I see it more as curated music samplers than actual subversion.

posted by runningwithscissors at 5:40 PM on December 19, 2009

Hello Recent Activity readers!

Today's the last day to sign up for this swap. If you're seeing this tomorrow or later, never fear! There will be another swap along before you know it (sometime in June, probably).

I will attempt to sort and assemble swapsets before Christmas. Keep an eye out for your swapset assignments. Also, any suggestions for swapset name themes?

Once you get your swapset assignments, the mailing of mixes can commence. Just make sure to do it by the mailing deadline: Saturday, January 23rd, 2010.

Happy swapping!

I just finished putting together a yin-yang CD mix for a friend for Christmas ... the yin tracks are all close, introspective stuff, and the yang tracks are broader in scope/subject matter.

star wars
star trek

Group names? How about something based on the "standing or sitting" thread, without actually naming what it is? Like, "The side-leaners" or "Front to back-ers"?

Yeah, sorry folks. The past 10 days or so have been a perfect storm of internetlessness, ridiculous busyness, and now ailment. The guilt I feel commenting on MeFi when the swapsets haven't gone out is excellent motivation.

OK, sent. And no, your swapset's name DOES NOT indicate what theme your mix should have. I had trouble finding any list of music-related kitsch with 28 viable entries so I just copied a bunch of genres from AllMusic.

The Zouks
The Microtonals
The Techno-Tribals
The Ambients
The Gabbas
The Psychedelics
The Yodelings
The Anti-Folks
The Honky Tonks
The Jives
The Chouval Bwas
The Microhouses
The Sweet Bands
The Polkas
The Sea Shanties
The Bluebeats
The Fados
The M-Bases
The Illbients
The New-Progs
The Boogie-Woogies
The Exoticas
The Old Timeys
The Newbeats
The Spirituals
The Nyahbinghis
The Sports Anthems
The Freakbeats

28 swapsets, damn. ~150 participants, crazy.

I think this may be the largest swap ever, definitely since I've started administering. Cool!
