OTOH, it would give a false sense of security. $5 isn't that high a barrier. And since we have a real sense of security in the form of anonymous questions, I don't see the need.

If you posted something that is going to get you into trouble -- like, for instance, a really detailed request for homework help that could have been posted by only one person in the world -- you could ask very nicely to have that post deleted. I believe the correct form is to send a "hope me" message to the moderators and then hope that they and the stars are with you.

I watched that episode of Hoarders with horrified fascination. I wonder if a family member has ever bothered to take that woman to a neurologist. Based on her lack of affect and disconnection from reality I suspect she suffers from focal cognitive deficits caused by stroke or senility.

Serious related question: Why is MetaTalk indexed?
Well for one thing before the site search was improved (and before the back-tagging and back-titling projects had completed) you really had to use google if you wanted to find anything in metatalk, so it's a good thing that it is indexed and I hope that never changes.

Serious related question: Why is MetaTalk indexed? IMO, it doesn't contain any content that's of use to people outside MeFi, but it does contain a lot of ugly discourse that doesn't paint a good portrait of the community.
MeTa isn't just ugly discourse. The conversations here tend to be more passionate and intense, yes, but they're often a lot deeper and more interesting than what normally shows up in MeFi and AskMe threads.

Remember those big ol' Matsushita-made VHS camcorders that were sold under a dozen or so brands? You could generate the sweetest lunar landscape-type feedback with those suckers.
You know, my parents actually had one of them from an uncle of mine under the RCA brand. The family vids we have might be worth watching just to look at the semi-superior video quality on them (contrast to some of the early digital cams, do not desire a derail here...). Just wish it didn't break.
