Last-minute New Year's Eve Meetup Hijinx

Sorry to get this up so late, but yes, I'll be having a gathering New Year's Eve. Booze, food, and a fire pit if the rain holds off. And my upstairs neighbors are partying as well, so there is a bonus party!

Also, I live right of Smith street in Brooklyn, so away teams to any of a dozen bars may be organizied.

However, I have limited actual space, so RSVP here in this thread, (already got you TrishaLynn) and if it gets to 25 people or so, I'll have to cut it off (but really, with a group as groovy as NYC Mefidom, I can't imgine that many people have no plans at this stage of the game).

Additionally, we have a dog, so if you are allergic or anything like that, this may not be the party for you.

Finally, I have to sort of work around noon the next day, so at 4 a.m., if you don't sleep here, or work here, or sleep wth someone who works here, you gotta go.

We'll get started as early as six. Feel free to bring food or booze. IF YOU COME LATE BRING ICE. And sorry Fuq, we won't be able to do that broken glass ritual we were talking about. Mefemail me for the exact location.

Oh vrakatar, there will be broken glass where ever I go. Sabrage is specifically the technique I use to break glass on new years, and I wouldn't worry about it too much. I do it outside and I've been doing it for the past five years. At this point, is it a compulsion tradition and the glass-ringed cork is extremely good luck for whoever finds it.

Anyhow, there was talk at my place of having a new years eve shindig, but it is unknown right now. Supposedly our big event room was going to be rented, but as far as I know, the interested parties haven't put up their deposit yet, or touched base with us at all, so I don't know whats happening at my house. The Surreal Estate wanted me to help with their shindig but I'm undecided about the prospect of checking stamps at the door all new years long.

So, I haven't decided what I'll do new years. Maybe I'll be a wandering party-ronin whacking the heads of champagne bottle like a drunk Zatoichi. I might stop by after the ritual mess-making.

This just in from the foraging commitee: Silly hats, noisemakers, and plastic champagne flutes have been secured.

Can't make this one, but I look forward to next meetup after this.

Have fun everyone!

Is that secured-as-in-obtained, or secured-as-in-locked-up?

Ten four baker niner, obtained. Breaking news: Six pound ham sighted flirting with some sort of glazey liquid.

IF YOU COME LATE BRING ICE.

vrakatar will not be satisfied until he has ALL OF THE ICE IN THE WORLD!

Thanks for the offer, but it's supposed to snow again tomorrow, and I had enough snow last meetup. And last New Year's, for that matter.

I'm a definite maybe.

(Depending on how inebriated I am from earlier revelry.)

It's possible that I will make an appearance, probably with Bromius. We have another party in Brooklyn but we will make an attempt to hit this one too.

Oh that! Yeah that is fine, I was talking about that other thing, where we just hurl empty beer bottles at the concrete. Not doing that this year.

Possibly.

I'm incredibly lame and plan on staying in on New Years.

If you need help setting up, I'm your gal! I will also bring ice or will go forage for ice with whomever shows up late.

Even though it's highly unlikely, and even though I've never ever made it to a meetup yet, I would love to meet you all. I'm already attending a different party this evening, but if you send me the address there's a remote chance that I and my MeFite boyfriend would stop by late. I have a feeling the shindig we're going to won't run past 1 a.m., but I also have a feeling I won't run past 1 a.m.

My gremlins say the rain will hold off, snow is fine for a firepit.

This is perfect for that. Did I send you the location? Anyone else need the location? Whelk? Bingo? Ocher-D?

I do not believe that I have received the location.

argh, sorry Vrakatar, looks like the lurgy is acting up and I'm not any further than the bedroom. Apologies.

Hope it was (is?) fun. I ate duck, wandered around Brooklyn, saw fireworks and a girl in a banana, and sang songs with people on the L train.

whee!

Also: when did masks become a New Year's Eve thing? I saw Venetian style carnival masks everywhere.

Props to vrakatar, feistycakes, neighbors Claire and Aaron for arranging this! It was one of the best New Years I've had in ages.

Despite taking it way easier this NYE than I did last year, I still managed to get a hangover while at the party, had the cab driver do an emergency pull-over, managed to pay him just the right amount, and didn't realize till I started pulling my stuff out of my jacket pockets that I'd left my phone in his car.

So once I've had a bite to eat, my New Year's Day will begin win an epic quest to recover my phone!

Huh, I don't remember making that last comment, so I guess I really did have a good time.

I had a wonderful time. Thank you very much for having us all over!

Some highlights, for those of you who couldn't make it:

*The company. Great people. Great hosts!

*The fire pit in the backyard. And our desperate attempts to keep the fire going in the drizzling snow/rain.

*Bulgarian champagne drunk straight from the bottle.

*A knock-down-drag-em-out argument about the merits of the Kindle vs. old-school dead-tree books.

*Bacon-wrapped scallops. Nom-tastic!

*Ham. Beautiful fucking ham. The rest of the food wasn't too shabby either.

*Singing the praises of Vermont and its warm and tolerant and gracious people.

*Toasting the New Year in the backyard with fireworks, honking horns and gunfire from the nearby housing project in the background.

*The one. The only. The Joe. The Satriani

*Waking up Evangeline at the end of the night because she was sleeping on my coat which I needed.

Please to tell me more? (vrakatar)

She was tiny, with red hair in a pixie cut, dressed in a black turtleneck, skinny jeans, and a very, very large felt banana. She was on the phone, and trying to catch a cab (which was laughable, as we were in warehouseland, tucked under the BQE in the Hasidic part of Williamsburg). As my friends were figuring out where to go next, and as I was watching banana girl, a Hasidic man came up to us and, grinning ear to ear, said "Tomorrow is a big celebration! Tonight, my wife had two males!" It seemed as though he was so excited, he had left his home to tell everyone, even the freaks and hipsters that had spilled out of the shut-down warehouse party down the block. When he moved on, banana girl was still there, pacing back and forth in the middle of the street, on the phone with her brow furrowed and her arm raised to hail the cab that was almost certainly never going to come.
