No. But you can include links.

is there an easy site where i can drop a file then use that link?

What kind of file is it?

a picture (jpg i think)
posted by lake59 at 9:49 AM on January 7, 2010

Yeah, upload it to a free file hosting service, and then link to it. People do this all the time for "what's this song", "help me figure out how to do blahdiblah in photoshop", and "what's this a picture of" questions.

any suggestions for a free file hosting service?

The site imageshack is popular.

Try photobucket.

Thanks! I'll give it a try!

Maybe someone that is wiki-minded could create a handy reference page on the Wiki listing the best places to put files for linking in AskMe?

If you can recreate the image as ACII art, you can put it on the site, but it's not recommended, unless it'a an image of an elephant urinating.

Wow, MeTa is so nice and helpful today. What the heck happened?

Does it come up so often to warrant an entry in the frequentlyAQ?

any of these results will work.

Sometimes the schmoopy is nice. Sometimes I want someone to write a bot that will autopost 'GO PISS UP A FLAGPOLE' to every new MeTa thread.

Life is complicated.

I was late getting here.

GET A LIFE YOU MORAN!
posted by GuyZero at 10:42 AM on January 7, 2010

Note to the OP: you're not a MORAN and do not need to get any "life" but I just felt I had to fulfill the MetaTalk arrogance-rudeness-dismissiveness quotient. Nothing personal.

I know quite a few Morans.

But not Erin Moran, beloved star of "Happy Days" and "Joanie Loves Chachi".

Another option might be to hum what the picture is about and post it to MeFi Music.

I really hopes no one gets all fighty about the shmoopy.

Ok... I would like to attend a meet-up in every city in the world. Can we add functionality to the site that will figure out the best order to visit these cities, to minimize total travel distance?

FIGHT THE SHMOOPY. FIGHT IT TO THE DEATH.

Then give it a hug.

Zombie (shmoopy) only wants a hug.

Warning: hugging zombies can not only lead to disease, but to brains being eaten.

That's not really that hard. Now, if the solution has to be !NP...

I appreciate this because earlier this morning the phrase "barfing up the wrong tree" popped into my head and I was frustrated because I didn't think I'd get a chance to use it. Opportunity knocks!

I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this comment box is too narrow to contain.

MeTa's not nice. THIS MeTa is nice (so far), but only because there's hoppitamoppita one door down, and all the fighty is there.

Maybe we could post links to file hosting sites on the 'Ask A New Question' page?
posted by Effigy2000 at 1:57 PM on January 7, 2010

Blazecock Pileon writes "The site imageshack is popular."

Perplexity writes "Try photobucket."

Imageshack and photobucket are both sub optimal for this purpose because the hosting is by design impermanent. People reading the archives may not be able to see your image. Picasa web albums and Flickr[1] are both better in this regard as photos are at least in theory kept forever barring policy change or the company ceasing business.

1) I just checked and flickr accounts get deleted after 90 days of inactivity. It's not clear from their FAQ whether that means photos are removed at that time or not.

You know, I had an imageshack link in a comment on the vicky secret thread, and it disappeared, making me look even dumber than I am. I resisted starting a heated meta thread about it, though.
