Last May I posted a link to a Time magazine article about the assassination of prominent Guatemalan lawyer Rodrigo Rosenberg, carrying the allegations that President Alvaro Colom was behind the murder. A UN panel has concluded that the lawyer arranged for his own assassination.
Good grief. How amazingly calculating and malignant.

Why would anyone do that? Seriously, I'm curious: what's the motivation there?

Heh, good writing AP:
The lawyer, Rodrigo Rosenberg, contacted cousins of his first wife saying he needed a hired killer to deal with an extortionist, but he really wanted them to kill him.

It looks like the report is in Spanish on the CICIG website I linked to above. Maybe they have more information than the AP report.

2. the UN panel has motive to assasinate the character of Rosenberg.
Or maybe Rosenberg arranged for this conclusion to assassinate his own character.

According to the report, aside from his feelings of frustration at the lack of justice and personal responsibility for the Musa killings, he'd also just lost his mother to a long, debilitating illness. Also his second marriage was ending with the loss of custody of his young children who were leaving to live in Mexico.

Shades of Borges' "Theme Of The Traitor And The Hero" (which I can't find the text of online, but here's a reading of the story on YouTube, of all places.)

Also according to the report, in his last days, the lawyer took to speaking in a halting awkward faux-rap and wearing a silly hat. Also hanging out with Halle Berry.

You've got it all wrong.
Hamlet gave Rosenberg a letter that he was to carry to England, the contents of which instructed the English court to assassinate our hapless lawyer.

Sorry. Always wanted to do that.
On the car ride back from Christmas my sister and I discussed various complicated plans for suicide/murder framings. I think it came up because of that CSI where the woman kills herself with toothpaste, or is forced to kill herself with toothpaste, or something.
We never thought of pinning our deaths on a world leader.

Heck, if I could have taken down George W. Bush in, say, 2002 or 2003 by offing myself, I would have seriously considered it as the best thing I could do with my life for humanity.
