Survey says.... January 29, 2010 2:48 PM   Subscribe

Still curious where MetaFilter users are from? The survey results are in.

A recent MetaTalk thread prompted me to make a survey to get an idea of where MetaFilter comes from. Here are the first 100 results (posted as a comment to avoid formatting issues).

Survey notes: Unfortunately, I picked SurveyMonkey to implement the survey, which lures unwary internet people in to create a survey without mentioning that the free “basic” account includes few of the features necessary to make and interpret surveys INCLUDING THE “FEATURE” OF COLLECTING MORE THAN 100 RESPONSES. Sheesh. After collecting 100 responses, it cheerfully holds subsequent responses hostage while demanding that you upgrade to the “Pro” account. GRAR.

Also, I am not responsible for the existence of any locations mentioned in the survey.

Yeah, but I'd already posted the survey when I found that out, and I said I would post the results, so here we are.

yeah. those stupid quebecers, insisting on being part of Canada when the rest of the country is desperately trying to get rid of them. yeah.

Also, I doubt there's only one mefite from Buttland. This is the problem with collecting stats based on voluntary information.

Related question...
Is there a way to get to user locations if you're not logged in? I wanted to make an interactive posts map, but couldn't see how I could get to that info without actually being logged in.

Still more crushing evidence that Madagascar has no representation here. Perhaps it's time to consider an outreach campaign.* If for no other reason than we could get quality home video of Sifaka's.

Once again with passion: Oh, Canada! Please consider our plea! Trade Quebec for Hawai'i (the US may very happily give up Texas - you'd still have a province with foreign-sounding secessionists to dog pile). We even have the Union Jack in our flag. You guys spend half your year here anyway.

Let's do an average of the GPS co-ordinates to find the most convenient spot for Mefites (per capita), and then hold a meetup there. If it's out in the middle of the ocean, that's okay. We'll just have it on a boat and enjoy the liberties of international waters.

Obligatory. Also, I just imagined Matt winning a free boat ride for three...

Great Britain is an island.

Indeed it is. However, 'Britain' alone is more frequently used as shorthand for The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the political (as opposed to geographical) entity.

Just so everyone's clear - Canada is actually inside Quebec.

Back around the '95 referendum, the Royal Canadian Air Farce did a bit spoofing some of the federalist ads running at the time. It went something like:

Actor #1: I'm Jim, from Etobicoke, and my Canada includes Quebec.
Actor #2: I'm Shirley, from Medicine Hat, and my Canada includes Quebec.
Actor #3: I'm John, from Dartmouth, and my Canada includes Quebec.
Actor #4: Je m'appelle Gilles, de Sherbrooke, et mon Quebec inclut le Canada.
