Coney Island Follow-Up February 17, 2010 12:59 PM   Subscribe

Update: A while ago, Coney Island's looming gentrification was discussed on the blue. Well, it's been a while - and the results are coming Memorial Day, 2010.

Coney Island has been mentioned quite a few times on the blue, and has been the site of at least one meetup.

This update doesn't seem to merit its own post on the blue, but all of those Coney Island posts, I think, deserve a follow up. via.

"This update doesn't seem to merit its own post on the blue"

I don't see why not.

I, too, think this merits a front page post, just to bring out everyone who pops up frothing bile at the mouth with the mere mention of that word

Plans are in place to turn the run-down beachfront into a 27-acre, year-round amusement and entertainment district with restaurants, movie theaters, retail stores and hotels aimed at tourists.

Leaving aside the gentrify-Coney vs. Keep-Coney-weird arguments, since they're all done by this point: how the fuck are they going to get tourists to go to Disney Brooklyn when it's virtually impossible to get tourists out of midtown? Hell, it is hard to get many locals to go south of Park Slope. I love Coney, but it takes like, hours to get there from other parts of Brooklyn (via subway).

Ferry? Train (not subway) stop? Seriously, unless they're somehow able to make it into a capital-D Destination, I really can't see this becoming a tourist mecca.

Which I'm sure people also said about Vegas, but still.

I grew up under the roller coaster on Coney Island, which I think accounts for my nervous temperament.

To be fair to the tourists, some days they're basically stuck there, like in cartoons when the fat character is trying to get through the tiny hole.

Results. We are results oriented. We get results. Mostly because we leverage our synergies.

What I would like to see is the Coney Island from "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities." Suburban and indelibly frightening.
