Publishers meet over drinks to solve the problem of pirating once and for all! April 20, 2010 6:58 PM   Subscribe

Are you going to BEA in New York next month? Will you be in New York on the 26th of May? Do you like books?

I'll be in Manhattan and free on the night of the 26th of May. I'm there for Book Expo. Anyone else? Live there? Want to meetup with book dorks?

A book is like a youtube right? I don't have a kindle so I'm not into books.

Where in Manhattan would you like the meetup to happen?

My coworkers will be there! Alas, I'll be on my honeymoon so I'll have to miss it. Darn.

I'll be staying in either the Village or in Times Square. I'd prefer to stay in Manhattan but I'm willing to stray, though probably not too far from a subway exit.

No, but if you wanna sneak a copy of my new self-published book onto someone's display shelf, well...hey, MeMail me. ;)

I'll be around especially if red hot book action is involved. ;-)

Books are like the DS, except they're slower and there's no headphone jack.
Another meetup sounds good, though.

I'll be around, and I'm sure I'll be at BEA at some point (though I'm going to be finishing up an edit that week).

I'll be at BEA the whole time! I have an author event that evening, but would be able to meet up afterwards. (On a side note, if you'd like to come to the author event PM me--I'm not sure yet if it's ticketed, but if it is, I can get 'em).

BEA was such a guilty pleasure for me the two times I went. I work for a dvd distributor, but, since we sell to the educational market and to bookstores, sometimes we used to have an exhibitor booth so that the salespeople could do some networking. I'm not in the sales department, but, I am a total book fiend, so I would tag along and do errands and whatnot for the salespeople while they were stuck at our booth. But really I would spend most of the weekend going up and down the aisles filling my tote bags with books. I was like a kid in a candy store. (The guilty part of the pleasure though is that I still haven't read most of the books from my hauls, they just sit in a reproachful stack gathering dust.) The company doesn't get a booth anymore, but it's definitely a tempting idea to get myself a one-day pass at the Film & TV Production rate.

I'm not sure what's a good location for post-BEA drinks, but Daisy May's BBQ is pretty close to the Javitz Center.

Does anyone recognize this place? I'm pretty sure it's in the village. It has a big tanuki out front, and they serve you cotton candy on the way out the door. Cheap Japanese beer and Japanese junk food. Fried parts you'll need to be adventurous or a little drunk to eat, but pretty darn good. I can't find it on the Web. This place in the East Village might be it. Any interest? I'm going to go ahead and post this to meetups. We can figure out BBQ or fried chicken feet when the time gets cloaser.

Does anyone recognize this place?
Yeah, that's Kenka. It's on St. Mark's between 2nd and 3rd. I used to work across the street. It is packed on weekends but should be fine on a Weds. Dirt cheap (or at least it used to be in 2006.)

I will be returning home from a trip to Mexico that day, so I'll probably be too sunburned and hungover to do anything involving sudden movements.

I'll have a room in Times Square but I have a friend who thought she'd get an apartment in the Village but then ended up in Alphabet City. I suppose it doesn't really matter where I'll be sleeping. I'm willing to travel. Anywhere in Manhattan or not too far from a subway stop. Kenka's really made an impression on me. I had a lot of fun there and it was CHEAP and really good. I just found out I'll have to be at a BBQ/reception on Ninth and W. 15th until 8ish, maybe as late as 9. I hope 8:30 or later isn't too late. I'd love to do Kenka's again but I also love to discover. Though Kenka's might be perfect for relief from sunburn and a Mexican hangover.

For those attending the Book Expo, if you pass by the Bowker booth and they've got any new pamphlets/brochures/handouts about ISBN assignment, can you pick one up for me? Our sales rep is supposed to check for me, but, it would be nice to have a backup if she spaces on it.

Also, the current weather forecast is a high of 91-degrees on Wednesday and thunderstorms on Thursday, so it's probably going to be very muggy 91 degrees. I get out of work at 6pm, so, I figure I'll head right to St. Mark's Place and wait for the group - either at Kenka or whatever's uncrowded nearby. If anyone has a good pre-meetup-meetup location suggestion, please post. And if you have no suggestion but want to join me in wandering around St. Marks Place and/or hunkering down early at Kenka's, then the more the merrier.

Let me add that considering the recent events, I'm absolutely fine with moving this to next week when fake will be in town. I probably won't be able to attend, but I hardly think that really matters anymore. With my blessing, feel free to adjust as events might better dictate. And IFDSSN9, fuq, ochredraco, and fake--I like to consider myself a healthy skeptic, but my gut tells me that whatever happened, you are all amazing people, who did a very fine thing here. Who are still doing a very fine thing. Thanks.

Oh yeah, I'm just coming in for one day at the actual conference, Thursday. I won't be at Javitz on Wednesday, so I won't be able to snag the info you're looking for. Hopefully others can pick up the slack. I'll still be at Kenka sometime after 8. In my Everyone Needs a Hug t. Sounds like it's going to be t-shirt weather. Probably also hug weather. Memail me for my cell #, if needed.

p.s. The menu linked above is only a sampling. There are typically over around 100 items available on any given night. When I was last there they were out of bull penis, but still had some turkey testicles. It's like Dim Sum as imagined by Dali, or tapas as conceived by Burroughs.

Toekneesan, isn't fake just coming from 3/29 to 3/31? No sense postponing the Kenka meetup, I'm sure we'll figure out some time/place for the 'give fake a drink and/or a hug' meetup if he wants to. We're all going to want to have dinner on Wednesday, might as well do it together.

What time are people going to be here?
posted by grobstein at 11:13 AM on May 26, 2010

I just talked to my friend who first took me there and she recommended we try and get a table early. I'd suggest asking for a table for 15, if any of you early birds want to give it a try.
posted by Toekneesan at 11:51 AM on May 26, 2010

I'm sure I'll be there before 8; I will be there in however long it takes me to walk from 20th & Broadway, with some shoe-shopping enroute. I was too optimistic/ambitious in my choice of footwear this morning (and had to do more walking than I'd planned due to my train getting re-routed), so I need to find something more comfy before I do much more walking.

So, I should be there sometime after 7-ish? If they'll let hold a table for 15 until the 'official' 8:30 start, I will. If not, I'll just pick an empty corner, and as the group arrives we'll do a gradual takeover of the place.

Grar. Ended up having a 7am meeting which prevented my coming. Toekneesan, I tried to find you at BEA, but couldn't find a booth for your publisher. Did you have one, or were you roaming the halls?
posted by ocherdraco at 3:30 PM on May 27, 2010

A booth? That's like $5,000! I try very hard to be a responsible steward of the precious resources of the good people of the commonwealth. A booth doesn't really seem to make sense for us anymore. Since most of what we publish is of use to only scholars and libraries, we haven't gotten a booth in several years. Besides, isn't the point of the show to display our new title lists to store buyers? Since the decline of the indie, aren't there only like 50 of those still left in the country? I still go to the show. Had lots of very productive meetings but no, no booth. I went looking for you too at Macmillan's booth but I figured it was long shot. Maybe next time I'm in town.
posted by Toekneesan at 3:48 PM on May 27, 2010

Oh no! I'm at Bloomsbury, not Macmillan (we're both at the Flatiron; it's easy to confuse us).

(And it makes sense that you wouldn't have a booth—ours is tiny, but it still must cost a fortune.)
posted by ocherdraco at 3:58 PM on May 27, 2010

Did Bloomsbury have their own booth? I thought they displayed with Macmillan.
posted by Toekneesan at 5:12 PM on May 27, 2010

I just checked the map and I wasn't crazy. Yes, Bloomsbury had their own booth, but it looks like it was just across the isle from Macmillan. I suppose that makes sense as Macmillan does your distribution, don't they? I knew you worked for Bloomsbury, but I figure they design it with booksellers in mind. Their Macmillan sales reps also rep your books, don't they. I figured the best chance I had of finding you was in that area.

Indeed. And I was kicking myself for not emailing you to get contact information!
