I think Ebert is the new Big Picture. He's an excellent writer doing the best work of his life, and he's consistently posting awesome stuff, so a lot of that is ending up on MetaFilter.

That said, I kind of wish people would do more than just post a single link to Ebert's latest missive, to at least expand on his blog entry in some way so we're not just posting to every blog entry he makes.

It came up in the most recent post: Slightly off topic... Ebert responded to some rather vicious and nasty comments made by Tea Partiers on Twitter over the weekend.

It's a derail that went no further, but it's out there now. I think it's best that way.

What? No complaints about too much Conan?

There are always periods of 'overexposure' for media personalities at times (Ebert got 4 FFPs in 10 weeks after non-activity of 6 months); there's no such thing as evenly-distributed relevance. It just seems more so when it involves a personality who seems to have been around 'forever' (and for MeFites under 40, Roger has). The critical mass of 30+ years of media output make every additional unit seem like a 'last straw on the camel's back' for many. And a mix of TOTALLY RIGHT and TOTALLY WRONG opinions also increase the annoyance factor; he's flip-flopping between "senior philosopher" and "cranky old man" a lot. In time, another ubercritic will emerge to usurp The Ebert's position and people will complain that he/she is overexposed on MeFi.

I think Roger Ebert is a pompous windbag, but I’m okay with the volume of posts about him. What’s nice is that he’s a Pompous Windbag so you get people coming in and GRARING and then you get others giving a subtle read on the more accurate points Pompous Windbag is making, which lends you a broader, subtler understanding of the issue at hand. You also get a PASTABAGEL knowledge smackdown.

Man, I do not want to be around when Conan, Gaga, and Ebert die in a tragic iPad accident.

Newsfilter: Lady Gaga while appearing on Conan’s newly revitalized Spike TV show wearing an iPad shaped helmet apparently could not see through her high fashion outfit and failed to notice a rabid Roger Ebert roaming the hallways smashing any electronic device he came into contact with. The Ebert, blinded by his luddetic rampage confused Gaga’s shiny particle board faux iPad helmet with the actual iconic device and brained her to death with his 19th century braining stick. Memorial services are being planned by performance artists everywhere, including one inside a giant melting Barbie doll constructed specifically for the occasion. Comments from the Linux community indicate that the tragedy could have been avoided had she simply chosen an outlandish Penguin head instead.

When I made the post on his view on his "Games as art" opinion I kind of felt the same way. Since in the previous month there had been like 2 Ebert posts. But there was some back story to his opinion and it would lead to a nice, long discussion. I also assumed that this would be one of the fewer MeFi-worthy things he would do in months.

I think we may need a single link ebert post tag, or SLEP, if you will.

How much kale is too much kale? Gwyneth Paltrow prepared for Ironman II by eating almost nothing but kale. Here is her turkey kale soup recipe:

* 1 Yellow onion quartered
* 10 Cloves garlic minced
* 2 leeks
* asparagus tips
* 3 Stalks of celery
* 1 Parsnip
* A handful of thyme
* 2 Sprig rosemary
* 2 Low sodium vegan bullion cubes
* 12 C Water
* Bunch parsley minced
* 2 lbs. Boneless skinless turkey breast
* 1 T Soy sauce
* 1-2 lb. Kale

Rub the turkey with half the garlic, half the rosemary, half the thyme, soy sauce and half the parsley. In a soup pot add remaining ingredients except for the kale, sauté on medium heat about 10 minutes so the vegetables start to brown. Cover with water and add bullion simmer about 3 hours so the vegetables are cooked. Strain broth, meanwhile place turkey with seasonings in a covered roasting pan into a 370 degree oven. Roast about 1 ½ hours or until cooked. Take out of the oven uncover and let cool about an hour. Shred the turkey and add it to the strained broth. Take the stems out of the kale chop and add to the broth cook another hour. Serve garnished with fresh parsley and a splash of soy sauce to taste.

Upon the publication of Ebert's review, expect an FPP from me. Andy Rooney be damned.

I happen to enjoy the guy and have no problem with him showing up... One of the great things about printed media is that if you don't like something you can just SKIP IT. Getting one's panties in a bunch over "too much" of something within threads indicates an inability to edit on the fly... and in our increasingly information-saturated society, that way lies madness.
