This is why their ad revenues are fat... May 18, 2010 9:18 AM   Subscribe

What's the policy on sites that rip-off content from other sites...?

I'm not suggesting for a second Zardoz knew when they posted This is why you're fat but it's a blatant rip of a Mens Health article.

I feel uncomfortable about MeFi generating ad revenues for some blogger who stole content...

Is it possible to swap the link out and maybe allow for a "there's a better source for this" flag...?

Ew, that kind of sucks, yeah. The problem with no-attribution theft like that is that it's, yeah, often not clear that that's what happened.

I'll go switch the links. I don't think a flag is practical; writing us a quick note via the contact form takes not much more time and can give us specifics that a flag can't.

I swear I read something very similar in this month’s Glamour.

Ahem, my girlfriend’s glamour.

That she told me about.

I only read Penthouse.

For the articles.

Did the rip-off site also have each item on a single page? If not, I prefer that one.

It pains me a bit to make a change to a goddam click-o-fest, yes. But bad style is the lesser evil to outright theft, and this was pretty clearcut.

My suggestion: ask Zardoz if he minds the link being switched. If he doesn't mind: no problemo.

Someone in the thread suggested linking to the site on Yahoo, since it's all on one page and they have a partnering agreement with Men's Health - could you do that?

Hey, that's a good idea.

The real site doesn't work for me. Lame.

Yeah, "Men's Health" has slightly more useful health and nutritional information than say "Maxim".

And "Star Wars Insider" has slightly more useful physics and science information than "Teen Vogue."

Yeah. The replaced link is totally fucked.

Man, what the hell, Men's Health? Trying to help your mediocre ass out and then you go and collapse after I switch the link?

I'd be fine slotting in a legit Yahoo mirror of it if someone can provide the link. The one I saw in the thread wasn't actually the same content, just a brief overview of a few different Worsts.

It doesn't look like Yahoo actually has this article. So... yeah, what was the original link?

Death, followed by cutting into cubes, followed by jumping up and down on the cubes.

Unfortunately, it seems like we might have inadvertently done the same thing to the content originator's site, too.

The new link (http://eatthis.menshealth.com/slideshow/20-worst-drinks-america-2010) still does not work for me. This one does though: http://eatthis.menshealth.com/node/184612

I am canceling my subscription to Mod's Health immediately.

Can a few people check both of those and let's see if there's any consistent trend favoring one over the other as far as which works for who?

Both links in ericost's comment work for me. Well, in the sense that I can get to the page. Not in the sense that I'm going to click through 20 times.

Maybe they're using an intermittent interstitial ad and people are using ad blockers and getting a blank page? Which would be ironic.

What about linking to the Google cache?

FWIW, my first link works for me now too.

We could just list the damn things right here. I'll start:

1. WORST WATER:
Snapple Obscure-Fruit Healthy-Sounding-Buzzword Water Substitute
Junk food equivalent: 1 jar Karo Syrup and a soup spoon
Drink This Instead: Tap water (unless you live in Boston)

Making the people who did it consume all 20 of these drinks in a row. While we film the results and post them to youtube.

This whole kerfuffle is not doing any good for Cortex's Health (I see a magazine idea here).

I just wish I could see the list somewhere.

They didn't work for me for a while there too but they seems to be working now.
